its been non stop action north end of tiri channal kingis as lardge as 25 lb and snaps up to 20 lb weighing big fish every day got cuts all over my hand s from lifting heavy fish all day on the traces too but its all happening out thereat the moment with the wind the way it is thou the only boats im seeing out there is the big tiri cat and container ships you need a boat like diversity to handle fishing in 37m of water and 30knts of wind and half meter swells we just slowly drift at 0.5 knts put 10 oz on straight to the sand every 4 to 5 2lb pannies we getin fish from 10 to 20 lb weighed but a lot of the guys have lost some beatiful fish to the sharks im seeing about 5 to 10 a day getting munched usally when they get em to the surface and see the big snap they been fighting for 10mins getting turned from a 10lber to a 5lbr lol but each drop is a lucky dip as we all know. apart from that the dolphins and bridie whales have been between kawau anchouright and tiri also observing orcas got to see a orca snacking on a dolphin the other day impresive but the amount of sea life out there close in is awsome we even been hand feeding 1m kingis but not telling where ha book in with us and youl learn a lot we only spend about 325 days on the water with them all so following them is a daily thing a . any questions or bookings give us a call or jump on the email chris skipper diversity :) |

worst time of year for you guys Damo, bloody weather has ruined many trips I dare say, good to see your out there doing it while I am siting here waiting for it to pass, 30kts the other day solo was a bit of a worry one slip and its all over. Hand feeding kings wow very cool we used to feed them boiled peas at the barrier when I was a kid, would be a hell buzz for your punters

We are pretty lucky really...the boat is a go anywhere vessel, the Gulf is sheltered and its only really big easterly that shuts us down. Place is chocka full of fish for 9 months of the year so and like Chris said its looking like 325 trips this year. Almost went and secured a 2nd boat ...its just finding the right lease or purchase options.

...another good day in there. conditions dropped top 1/2 of what they were and Chris says the fish were on the bite all the way up to high water then rested. then came back on again.

had a good day today upon diversity... was a lil ruff slow in the morning.. but once midday came around there was a stage where we had trouble getting our lines to the bottom.. plenty of rats around kept the guys working and good fun on lite gear.... nothing massive today but quite a few around 5-7lb so plenty of eating..... also got to hand feed these guys ------------- When shooting a mime, don't use a silencer or his friends will hear you. Was certainly a crap day on the water today,left at 8with about 20 knts and by 10 am it was 30 ...hopeless,at least the fish were bitting... my pets bro we have from time to time handfed a big snapper in here too...20lb plus too. last evening was good fishing and this morning the boat left on a flat sea (slight breeze from SW) to fish north of Tiri and then east of Tiri a few miles. Of note yesterday was the re-appearance of the dolphins in the area bewteen Tiri and Kawau.

Saw Chris out there today kept going a good 2-3 kms out to avoid the traffic, picked up a few decent fish, nothing huge, but a good variety, including xos kahawai and a nosy king, also lost some goodies out there, wasnt keen to go out too much wider once the wind picked up. ------------- Dont take life too seriously.....no one gets out alive any way. http://www.legasea.co.nz" rel="nofollow">

Earthquakes again...tends to slow it all down Southeasterly this morning about 10-15 knots at GH and the ramp is pretty quiet. Just us and 1 other charter boat headed out. | yep was the worst fishing we have experienced since we have had our boat, (fished kawau ways) plenty of sign the one fish we did get jizzed all over the boat and had bite marks on him so maybe they are spawning.... were alerted to an area from a rather large shark jumping turned out to be jack macks everywhere, 3-5 at a time every drop, big schools of what looked like snapper underneath but not a bite, not even a jd on the livies, still the bait freezer got a little fuller |

| We were fishing in Kawau Harbour Sat morn off Takangaroa Island (spelling?) at the 14m mark. Got our limit of pannies with the best one going 2.5 kg. Also got 2 rats and 3 good sized trevs. All on half pillies. Back at Sandspit by 11am. |

Interesting, went out on Friday. Headed out wide to the 46 meter mark East of Tiri and although it was slow did OK with fish up to about 5lbs. Did a few drifts on the way back in as I saw sign, and the closer in we got the slower the fishing until when we got to about the 40 meter mark, although there was a lot of sign not a single bite. Might have been coincidence and more bite time related but definitely seemed more lively further out on Friday anyway. Ab ------------- What will a blonde girl say when you tell her she's pregnant? Ok so this is going to piss some of you off. Not having a go, especially not at Damo who comes across as a top bloke and excellent skipper, just crunching the numbers cause the start of the thread just made me think jeez that is a lot of fish. But let say on average 70 fish @ 7 lb x 325 days / 2.21 and 1000 = 70 odd tonne of fish. Mulitplied over a number of charter operators (i have no idea how many but lots) from cape to cape and on top of that 100's of other boaties and 1/4 of the population who live in that area say 500,000 people who would identify themselves as people who fish... Rec TAC for cape R to E cape is 2600 tonnes, Comms 4500 tonnes.
Again not to wind people up, and I'm sure those figures don't equate to the success or otherwise of the rest of the charter fleet given that Damo is likely better than you average skip but the numbers just sort of blew me away so I thought I would share my train of thought. Would think people would expect to take home at least 4 -5 fish to make it an acceptable day. Thats still 40 to 65 fish on a bad day 100 + fish on a good one. There is a quota management system in place to protect the biomass Bull. It works very well so I see and understand from the scientists. If there were any issues with the species or numbers of fish in general not being sustainable then I'm sure those in charge of protecting the fishery would be quick to alter the recreational catch limits. I'm glad you didn't class charter boats as commercial fishing here too mate as we are clearly only the guides for rec anglers and any fish caught must be within the rec rules. I will admit there have been days when I wonder what they will do with all the fish they have caught but its not my place to judge. I also keep in mind that some anglers will fish with us say twice a year and do it purely for food for the table. An example would be a small club of 10 anglers who twice a year like to take a limit bag for food. Nylg1 I agree as a general rule that only 10% of the people who fish would be good keen fisho's who regularly invest in and catch fish. Don't necessarily agree the 90% part just for sheer volume and the fact most good keen fishermen eventually have quite a conservationist ethic. Agree Damo. Totally aware of the QMS and that that gulf has been particularly well managed in the last few years. It will be interesting to see the results of the rec survey being completed over the next couple of years. Just that people often on these forums have a go at the Comm guys, thinking that rec fishing can't be near the same in tonnage... Don't worry about it Bull your catching fish so why worry the fishing is awesome actually getting better imo and I know a lot of others who agree so as long as folks stick to the rules there is no problem. And did'nt Damo also say on the days he was actually loading up(in the NEster) that he was the only one out there pretty much....So 100 fish out of a school of most likely thousands ain't gonna hurt.

whenever I go on diversity I try to catch my limit, not because I will eat that much fish, I personally dont eat fish, but because I like catching fish as all on this forum do. I generally keep 2 fish for the wife and give the rest to neighbours and family. some of them only eat fish when I give it to them. ps there have been days that the boat hasnt caught its limit (only the odd day mind you and usually when im aboard ) thats why they call it fishing and not catching!

it changes daily...some days its a large average size(10-14lb) and on others it may be pannies (35-50cm) sort of thing. The time of year changes things also so far as numbers/size go eg in winter you may catch a few larger fish but not in any large numbers. Top thread Damo to give us tips on where to go Was in that area today with lots of gannets working, heap of fish on the sounder but pretty tentative still on the softies Workups were brief but frequent as the dolphins were chasing the bait i guess

I am probably one of the unlucky guys which are fishing for the future without even knowing, everytime I went out with Damo I never caught my limit, last time being the worst with only 1 small fish in the bag . I guess it's my luck of picking only bad days

Was a good trip Damo, a few of the punters struggled but myself and my father in law got our limit. Not overly big fish put big enough. Lady next to me caught the biggest on the second to last drop, would have been around 9 - 10lb's which was her biggest snapper so far on the crappiest rod and reel combo. Only had 3 wraps on the spool left before she started making progress then the reel shat itself half way up. Had to crank the drag right up for her to stop it just spinning, bent shaft etc. Gave her my spare reel and she caught another on straight away on her last drop. Her husband on the other hand unfortunaly couldnt buy himself a bite First charter with you and will definitley be back Damo, Chris was a great skipper who through the six degrees of seperation is friends with my sister, far too small a world |

today..northerly springing up. Should be gusty by dark and still gusty in the morning. Its keeping them biting though as we are towards Kawau a bit more and 70 odd in the bin so far...and SHARKS! Damn You! chewing through the rigs hard out. 2 trips tomorrow as the wind will ease about 10 am and be down to about 15-20 for the rest of the day and rain will bugger off. Weekend looks good for all 4 trips too. Keep an eye out for us on TradeZone Gone Fishin on saturday. We'll show case some good snapper fishing using just about every technique there is. wind easing...20 knots now. Boat back in - 6 pretty happy angers with snapper to 16lb. Evening trip leaves in an hour...same area no doubt. Would be good for a small boat launch from Martins Bay tonight.
