Hi guys, Just wondered does anyone just used nylon not braid - or start off using nylon? We had a popper tied on to our bait runner last time we were at the penguins just used a swivel and heavy trace to the popper but when I got nailed line broke so it obviously was making a good enough action. Must have been a nick in the mainline or something?

No reason why nylon would not work, it just reduces your line capacity on the reel, braid being thinner, and as it is heavier and thicker than braid it will not cast as far. There may be a marginal difference in hook-setting being the braid has no stretch, so hooks are hammered home immediately, but personally I doubt this makes any difference at all. Nylon would be more forgiving on the tackle, the line stretch acting like a bit of bungy cord. Basically I think the main advantages of braid over nylon for poppering is the extra casting distance and line capacity. If you are not aiming for huge distance casts, then nylon should be just fine really. |

If you use something like "suffix synergy" it has some braid characters to it.....thin for its breaking strain and its low stretch...It also very good value for the amount you are sold on a spool and it allows you to get reasonable capacity on your reel too.Then you have the points mentioned by capt....just watch for line twist with mono mind.Use swivels somewhere in the link. check out "discount fishing supplies" online for that  with ref your line breaking=what was your strike drag like?when the first turn their head to run...there is a lot of power put on the line to start your reel spinning...I lost a few like that in my early days...Drag was set too tight...better a little lighter and adjust once the fish is on the way

Nylon is how we used to do it RA so believe it or not but it used to work. Nah check your system and ensure all your line is good with decent knots and clean, nick free line and nothing like damaged guides causing line damage you'll get them.

| If you had an unexplained failure in the line, perhaps check your eyes on the rod are not chipped or the roller in the reels bail arm is not rough or likely to wear out your line. |
