Hey guys
I'm off to Raro on Sun for 3 weeks and packing up a bit of gear as you'd expect. Heard from one f.net member on land based in Raro, wondered if any of you stickbait/popper guys had any advice, experience etc to share?
Cheers

Landbased I fished the mouth of the muri lagoon (I forget the name of the harbour entance there).

There is a track from the main road up to the left hand sid of the point, you can climb down the rocks and wade in, and cast poppers/stick baits into the channel. When I was there I had a few follows but no strikes - was fishing mid afternoon.

There is a story about a giant GT in the main harbour that people have hooked but noone has landed, my local mate reckons they come out at night in there, but I don't know how much of a yarn he was telling (typical rarotongan storyteller my mate is lol)

Thanks guys, sounds great. Will defo have a go on a charter or 2 but really want to do a bit of landbased too. We're staying at a friend's place at Muri, so that sounds just the thing! Is that the track that goes by the fishing club?

If you walk past Moko's boat / wifes shack  there is a good rock at the entrance to the lagoon there which would be agood casting area but Iv'e seen GTs swimming just next to where Moko moors his boat !

I have had a lot fun fishing the passages with poppers. Just used a 5-10kg softbait rod with a reel loaded with 8kg braid and cast out small poppers. Caught bluefin trevally and longtom plus assorted others I couldn't identify. You have to cast into the deep water of the channels. To be honest it was some of the most fun fishing I have had for years. Tried softbaits but found when they sunk just got snagged every 2nd cast. You don't have that problem with floating poppers. I am fairly sure GT's come into the lagoons at night because I hooked on 3 occassions absolute freight trains which blitzed me at high speed - one of the fish was on a 15kg outfit and I got smoked in a major way. All I could see in the moonlight were these huge splashes as these big fish herded up some bait fish against the shore. Good luck!

Not far from the gate fishing club, I think it was across the road from a church,

Here is where I was fishing

But as mentioned the lagoon passages are good spots, just watch the current/your footing. Make sure you have something on your feet, and be mindful of the Rahui/no take areas, you should be ok as you will likely release anything  you catch in the lagoon as most fish there have ciggy

Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated aye.

Last question! I'm taking a selection of poppers from 140-200mm in various colours. Anyone got any specific experience that says particular colour/size is better? Found they took anything in Aitutaki, but thought I'd ask the question.

Got a rod on loan from CD to test & review for them while I'm there, so am going to do everything I can to put as much of a bend as poss in it over the 3 weeks! Including trying for YFT on the fads with a mate of mine. Should be good

:)
