When i go fishing, i usually drop into the tackle store before hand to garb some Bait and burley, Now, while i can melt the bait individually and it thaws quickly, The burley bomb stays solid for a number of hours even in direct sunlight.. IM sure im not the only one who is faced with this dilemma. So my question is, how do you thaw burley bombs quickly and efficently? Ive tried.. Boiling water - but the bomb cools the water down too fast breaking up into pieces - much to hard with a bait knife and still takes too long  now the common sense method is to buy the bomb the night before, and leave it out until you leave, But what do i do when this is not possible in the time frame i have at hand? What I do is turn the car heater on high and aim it at my feet, then put berley in the passenger footwell and take my sweet time getting to the spot. It'll still be a bit solid, so I fill my bucket with seawater and drop it in and leave in the sunlight - giving it the odd stab/stir. It wont be long before chunks start coming off, and it helps you to resist the urge to throw too much in :) Creative and remote alternative - get one of those heat packs, I have one for my shoulders somewhere, you bend a little metal disk that is inside it and they heat up and stay hot/warm for hours - could easily wrap the berley in one. To reset them you have to boil them in water, then they cool, and stay cold until you flick the metal disc again. No batteries. yeah i use dry burley in conjunction with the burley bomb, makes things go further..

Should'nt be a problem from now but here is a tip, buy a small one kilo one to get ya started it thaws much quicker, make sure it gets plenty of water movement (wash) on it and lastly chunk in a few chopped up pillies to get started.

Why defrost it?? Its great frozen, it dispences slowly and keeps a nice slow trail going which hold fish for longer. Its not so much about the amount that comes out, its about have a consistent trail going. I reakon having frozen burley doing its thing is great, then slabbing up some kahawai cubes or what ever else is around is a great way to pump the scent out there. If you can, throw the frozen burley in, and carry a little dry burley for inbetween to keep it going. When its frozen it may not look likes it working, but take a look at the slick, its still there weaving its magic.

a gas axe might fix it... buying the night before and leaving it in the fish bin seems to work well for me...although I reckon frozen works just as well as unfrozen if the burley is oily... |

the waters warm enuff, it will sort it self out, or whack it w a axe or chet put in bucket w scraps and ladle away. also your shelfish mixs go a lot faster than a fish one ------------- sometimes you are the statue ,sometimes you are the pigeon |

Yeah I reakon the real issue is when it not frozen and it goes in 5 minutes. Just keep giving the rope a shake Jorden, it will be sufficient enough. If it is that still and there is no current at all, your burley is not going to be of much use apart from luring spotties out anyways. Watch the smooth patch on the surface, it may suprize you how much work it is actually doing with dispensing so fast bro.

Defrosted + ladel = kahawai at feet To make it last longer, I half fill the bucket with water, so each spoon is mostly water with only a couple of chunks in it. Even at oriental low tide the other night, had a pile of baby kahawai and a decent sized one rolling around. In the past when I've used berley containers I've never seen that, and it sucks if they get caught on something, or float back in to shore. Just my preference I guess.
But in saying that, with something like a kina berley, frozen in a burley bag/container is probably better. Think that is more of a smelly burley than a smell+action burley. |

the longer it lasts mate the better off you are, when we burly both from the rocks and the boat we set the burley pot [if we use one at all] and then break up pillies and as it disappears the next piece hits the water, to much is not always good, specially if there are tope around ------------- Ultimate GAME Fishing Adventures. yeah thats the sort of thing i was thinking about trying BA, sounds good, the only problem with the bucket/ladel thing is i tend to put in too much, and inadvertently Feed the fish instead of entice them as im aiming to.. i like the sound of slow release with chunks of pillie goin in.. We use a cray bag, and and drop the whole 3/5/10kg Frozen bomb in it with just a very few holes. The aim is definatly to just let it slowly dispense and to keep the baitfish feeding This will create a bit of action around your chosen spot. Let it sit just on the washline and that should be enough to keep it slowly cranking out. Can always give it a few shakes from time to time, stomp on it or add a few extra holes. But once its gone, those baitfish will generally disappear too. It should last a good few hours, the more frozen the better. ------------- here fishy, fishy fishy..... |

 This is my berley bag Jordan, (thanks JK) looks like what Bungel is describing. I put a small hole in the plastic around the berley. Usually a circular hole about 4-5cm across. If there's a lot of swell and the berley's getting smashed and dissipating too fast, I chuck an empty plastic bottle in the bag to float it away from the rocks. I also bought a big swivel from a sailing suppliers. This goes between the rope and the bag and stops the whole thing spinning and twisting. The sinker at the end is for jamming in a crack- a very solid anchor. |
