Subject: WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE YOUR FORUM HANDLE?
Date Posted: 29 Nov 2011 at 12:21pm
I'm hoping this is the right place to post this topic. If there is already a thread in this vein on the site, please mods, feel free to do what you have to do.
Sooo...I chose "sulla" because the original Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix is a hero of mine (I'm a Roman history geek). He was a ruthless ******* with a warped sense of humour (I'm a warped ******* with a ruthless sense of humour so there's a kind of symmetry!). He had the chance to be the first Roman Emperor (about a century before Augustus), but gave it up because he wanted to drink and root himself to death instead of being burdened with having to wipe Rome's collective stinky bum. LEGEND.
My sig adorned his gravestone - "NO BETTER FRIEND, NO WORSE ENEMY".
That's my story. What's yours?

from memory his brother became emperor didnt he? so many emperors with about 35 or 40 in the 2nd centry alone supprisingly, silver coins from the Roman area are dirt cheap. I own a few coins from the time of Christ and BC. You can buy them from $40
Also supprised at the size of the people back then, a large ring worn by them is 18 to 20mm accross with the average being about 14mm to 16mm. Now measure your wedding ring, 20 to 24mm? The Roman people were possibly only 5 to 5'6 tall. Not really what we think is it. I also enjoy Roman history but know very little of it.

No; he did have a half brother Publius (who'd been adopted by one of the richest men in Rome) that he found out about later in life, but he was killed by Sulla's arch enemy Marius for his money. If you want to learn more about Roman history Barrie, check out http://www.unrv.com - www.unrv.com - an excellent site and just like this one if you have questions you want answered.

I think the emperor you have in mind is Claudius - he was after his brother Caligula who was the third emperor from memory. The Praetorian guard got sick of Caligula (he was mad), killed him, and acclaimed Claudius emperor against his wishes.

Sulla - Cool thread. I thought Sulla had.. "No friend ever served me, and no enemy ever wronged me, whom I have not repaid in full" on his gravestone though? I may be wrong, im not that historically inclined.
I chose my name because all my friends know me..
Cheers
Alex.

That's the tag on Sulla's gravestone that history has embellished. Historians alive at the time to see his tomb (Cornelians were inhumed instead of cremated) attest that his actual tag was more straight to the point, although with Latin (as with Maori!!) you have room for artistic licence when translating!!
Loryda is a cool handle bro. Makes me think of the Cheech and Chong song!!

I honestly have doubts about that, The size of rings that were worn suggests that they were a lot smaller. Cyclops was based on fact and he was a giant at an estimated 6'6''
I have bought a few of the largest rings and the largest I have been able to find is 18 to 19mm but there are plenty of 13 to 16mm

After the 1st century AD, there were pysical qualifications such as height - before that there was a property qualification (you had to be able to supply your own gear. In the last century BC, Gaius Marius changed the playing field by letting the poor of Rome into the legions and opened the floodgates for others to be allowed, such as the provincials). But by that era there were a lot of conscripts in the legions who were from other parts of the empire ie Gauls, Germans, Spaniards. Gauls and Germans in particular were considered giants by the Romans, but reports from Caesars' Gallic Wars say that "giant" was 6"3, 6"4. Once the Romans figured out that they could get the provincials to man the legions, true Romans from Rome ceased to feature in the Legions.

Homage to my father in law and my wife. Was never into fishing, untill he gave me his share of his boat. A ramco dominator 555. He gave me/us the boat on condition I married his daughter...(was going to anyhoo). He allways called his daughter peanut (small and cute as a...) so found it fit when we took full ownership of the boat to name it after her. peanut. Nothing to do with drugs.

Greywulff, The Grey Wulff represents a bushy, high floating spent mayfly, that remains visible into the evening twilight, and rides well in rough water. Every modern fly angler should have one or more of Lee Wulff's innovations in there flybox. The Wulff series of fly patterns were developed by Lee Wulff. Lee died in his 86th year at the controls of his light plane in 1991.I was given my first Greywulff at the age of 7 and over the years spent countless hours hunting down big Irish trout with one of these flies. Also named two boats Greywulff, the fly is that good.....

well mine was sort of allocated to me way back in the early 70's ... Always had a passion for fishing and was keen to learn and caught heaps... All the parties I attended , I would bring a fresh caught whole snapper or two, wrapped in foil with salt, pepper, butter, lemon rings and heaps of dill and parsley.. These were thrown on the BBQ and devoured as an entree to the main bbq meal... when new folk came to meet me.. they would then say... oohhhh your that "fisher" guy that brings all the magic fish... so "fisher" just stuck.... I have used it on all the forums I attend but found there was another already here so changed it.. but it just didn't feel right.. so on here I became *fisher*

I chose mine after the captain in Moby Dick. I read Moby Dick at uni, liked it. If I were to change it, might be to Quint, the Ahab equivalent in Jaws. But actually I don't identify much with captains. I changed to my real name for a bit, but that didn't sit right, so back to Ahab.Like the story behind your handle, Sulla, and the signature, too.
I might go for "Glutius Maximus" or "Biggus Dickus" if I were to choose one from the ancients!

The name has stuck so much so that me family and friends all call me tugger and those that wana be nice tug!!

You don't need the help of a Forum Moderator (or Grunta for that matter) to change your forum handle. The "How-to" has been mentioned on here many, many times.....

Hm...I wonder if anyone actually wants to change their handle though afterall it's unique and that's how others identify us?

Yes, you are probably correct, Andy. I thought long and hard about changing my forum handle - even had a new one ready to change to - and then a forum member told me that no matter what I decided to call myself, I would always be "Olfart" to him. So I decided there is some value in being unique......

Why dont we use our real names on the internet? If we have nothing to hide why do we all use fake names and only for the internet. Knowone can do anything if they know our real names. Its no different to the real world. I once asked my mate whos not even into technology or computers and hardly even uses the internet what his name was on the website so we could play a game of poker HU. He told me his real name and then looked at me like i was some sort of mentally challenged neandathol. Thats was what made me think about how we all follow the sheep subconsiously. And it probably all started when microsoft were testing the internet for the first time and made a robot called Test2000 or something. lol. Back to question. I choose my handle cause i couldnt think of anything else on the spot and was at the whalf trying to cach livebaits and all i was getting was frikin paketis irritating the crap outta me all that day.

Mine is my nick name in real life which stems from my surname. Full nick name is Dirty Old Bung Old Uncle Harry, which I was christened with during a messed up and twisted New Years Eve Party plus I'm a foul mouthed, crude humoured, grotty bugger.

I agree with that - it is my second language after all... Still it does remotely look like English where I am still scratching my head over feijoa's one...

Surprised you guys dont know what Feijoa was saying. Its honky tonk slang from a new Language that first came to light in the Auckland City council office last year. Its called "Brownese" . Should reach the concise Oxford in a year or two.
