Hi Guys,
I hoping you guys can give me some tips on a good setup for surf casting. I just bought a Silstar Covert 12' Rod and I am on the look out for a good reel.
I want to know some information regarding the size of the reel and also some help on what weight line to use.
I'll be doing mostly beach/rocks with this setup.

Pretty much any fixed spool reel that can hold a couple of hundred mtrs of 10kg mono will be fine. In price you can pay $50-$300, you get what you pay for. Reels are one place I don't scimp on, losing a good fish to a sticky drag will cost you hundreds of $ worth of self-critism, lol. Your rod will have a few ratings on it, sinker weight and line weight. Ideally line, rod, and reel will form a nice balance subjective to the user. heavy line weighs more and causes more friction, shortening your cast. To light causes break-offs, so line, or even a particular set up is then balanced to a particular spot or conditions. 10kg is a good all rounder, but I will use anything from 6-15 kg. A reel with spare spools is good for this.
Hope that's of some use.
edit- great advice here. http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/surf-casting-your-best-tips_topic72024.html

I know I can't wait, problem is that I am still on the hunt for a decent reel. I had my eye on a reel but decided it was a little hasty. A friend of mine (who referred this website onto me) is going to give/lend me a reel to get me started. At the moment most of the funditure is going towards the wedding in Feb, so the fishing can has been depleted. I was lucky enough to score my 12 footer off trade me for $15!
Ahhh I can't wait to get my lines wet!

1st one i came across http://www.discountfishingsupplies.co.nz/shop/daiwa-saltiga-surf-6000-long-cast-surf-reel-p-3075.html - http://www.discountfishingsupplies.co.nz/shop/daiwa-saltiga-surf-6000-long-cast-surf-reel-p-3075.html bit chaching but there are cheaper google long cast reels if thats what you really need good luck.

The spool on a long cast reel looks stretched out. This eliminates some of the friction that is created during casting as the line comes of the spool.

If you really want to make a long cast reel and 150-200mtrs every time, get one of these http://www.alvey.com.au/default.asp?contentID=448 - http://www.alvey.com.au/default.asp?contentID=448 but as your not use to casting such large reels and want an egg beater reel. go for a long cast reel that suits your budget or if you can wait buy quality and never look back. cheap reels wont last long in the salt water environment. save up the xtra :) PS yes i know other folks can cast up to or more with free spool reels ok :)

Awesome info guys, As for that link for the reel, I'm not sure I would be capable yet with that kind. Give me a couple months to get into the midst of it then I will start getting more serious. But you guys have been amazing with your help.
Me and my fiancé are heading to Mairangi Bay in the morning. Hopefully I will be able to post some pictures of our pot!

We found a wicked spot in castor bay, get there before high tide and leave after low. We got there a little late this morning (9 ish) but as soon as the bait hit the water we were busy. Unfortunately due to some old tackle I lost some nice fish.
We landed a small spottie. Didn't bother taking a photo cause it was a little small really. Over all a good day bar the tackle issues. Sorting that out later on this week. (Pay day )
Looking to go out later this week and am very excited. We found some snapper carcases that was around 40cm in size, so I have hope for this site yet.

Penn 760L Slammer
Maybe 3 years old, but used a dozen times. A few cosmetic sratches but in great knick, all my gear gets throughly cleaned after use.Its currently loaded with braid, which I think you'de be better with mono for surf casting, so I can strip that. Normally the "live liner" (baitfeeder drag) disengages when you wind the handle. This one doesn't, probably just something sticking, would be resloved easy enough if opened it up, but as it wasn't an issue (just click it over manually) so I never bothered.
Refer http://www.discountfishingsupplies.co.nz/shop/penn-slammer-reel-p-4740.html - http://www.discountfishingsupplies.co.nz/shop/penn-slammer-reel-p-4740.html for specs & new price.
$125 to your door if you want it. PM me

Hey Struc that slammer looks wicked, I just don't have the mula for that now (my fiancé went and spent $175 on make up for our wedding in Feb) so I'm a little short at the moment.

Yeah we went of the breakwater, gets you nice and close to the deeper water. The fish was very likely snapper, we didn't see much KY there.

Hi stay away from rovex, it's a branded reel, crap as crap can be. crap that is crap and rovex is crap. get a good surf casting long cast reel. your better off in the long run. most of the surf casting guys n gals can point you in the right direction, as for the other two reels, one is for softbaiting and the other is for spinning both not good for surf casting..oh btw stay away from javis walker thats crap to :)

A thought dawned on me last night about those reels. I saw one in America Okuma avenger that I can land here for around $90 NZ. These reels are to go on a smaller rod but I wanted to make sure that I check them out before hand.
I was indeed looking for a baitfeeder reel to go on my new 7' rod I just got.
Thanks for the info I'll go with the Okuma insteed!

place a WTB in buy/sell/trade. For the money your looking to spend you need to go pre-loved I reacon, so as not to be tempted by new cheap sh** thats not going to last. Someone might have a half decent reel gathering dust.

I just bought an Okuma Oryx 65a last week, have taken it out to put it through it's paces and it's awesome. The dude I got it off said he got it from the fishing tackle shop website (apparently it's an Aussie site) for $99 bucks. This is the info off the site about the reel;
Features
• Infinitive Anti Reverse Bearing
• 5 Sealed S/Steel Ball Bearings
• Anodised Long Cast Aluminium Spool
• Graphite Spare Spool
• Multi Disk Oil Soaked Felt Drag
• Worm Shaft Oscillation
The Okuma Oryx long cast fishing reel has a gear ratio of 3.8:1 and a max drag of 9kg. The okuma Oryx is a large size fishing reel great for longer distance surf or rock casting.
Line Capacity is 560 yards of 12lb fishing line - 400 yards of 15lb - or 330 yards of 20lb
I'm not really down with all the technical stuff - I just whacked it in the reel seat and took it to the moana, threw it out there. It cast heaps further than my Jarvis Walker Integra Silver does and after a while I found I was obsessed with getting casting distance and not so much with catching fish. Which, as you would agree, is arse backwards!! I like the reel though, it's tough, a recognised brand, and it was a bargain.
Good luck dude, go hard, get out there and catch a feed.

Also bro, I'm the kind of fisherman who is on a very tight budget. Although I can understand the prejudice towards Jarvis Walker gear, I've found that my surfcasting reels and rods that are Jarvis have done me well. Most of the fish I've caught have been off an Integra Silver which I've had for a while now with no problems. I just look after it and don't expect it to do anything it wasn't designed for. I got one of those budget blue Jarvis Walkers as well, and that's been cool. Hard core gamer is right about the rovex stuff though; it's ****e.

We get a lot of big 20kg plus kingfish from the beach up here. so we need a reel with at least 200mtrs of line on, i have 400mtrs just to be safe, as a sting ray will spool ya no worry's. so get a good quality reel ok. better to be safe than sorry later on

I ended up getting that Penn 760L Slammer on a Penn Power Stick PPS 6601 TBM from Structfab. Picking that up on Monday. My work mate has given me a Silstar strike LF80 that he got as a combo but wasn't using. I will save up some money and get a better reel at some point but it does for the time being. I just wanted to get out there. Here is a link to it:
http://www.discountfishingsupplies.co.nz/shop/silstar-strike-lf80-surf-reel-p-2357.html?osCsid=9a59b1e878f01d906ee21bd06260 - http://www.discountfishingsupplies.co.nz/shop/silstar-strike-lf80-surf-reel-p-2357.html?osCsid=9a59b1e878f01d906ee21bd06260
I haven't had the opportunity yet to actually land anything on it so its still has to make the cut. But I have some hope for it yet!

Unless you snag a king or a ray, I think you'll be sweet. Issue I've found with the cheaper reels, is more that they tend to fall apart or have inferior saltwater protection. The drag or casting ability seems to be fine for general use (for the most part). I've killed 2 x Silstar ($40 and $100), 1x cheap Abu Garcia, and the handle fell off my Jarvis Walker (but same factory as Silstar possibly, as the Silstar handle bolted up perfectly!). Survivors are two shimanos and a quantum (and the JW/Silstar cyborg). Boca 80 from Quantum on the other hand, I've given it torture over the last few months and it feels like new (just don't look it!). Nice work on the Penn, let us know how you find it.

Cheers, Yeah shes a bit windy today, I'm hoping to get out this arvo after tech. Going to try some new techniques and also some new bait in the spot by castors bay. Hopefully if all goes well I should have some pics to shows.
And I hope then I don't hook up a ray or a kingi with the Silstar Strike. Plus not sure if I would rate myself against a kingi yet. Suppose we'll find out!

I actually purchased a Okuma Latitude LD 90a reel and a 13ft rod combo for my first surf set, could not use it as I could not fit the tip to the mid section, it just would not fit, will go back to Hunting and Fishing tomorrow.
