Hi just wanting to know if anyone has used a Penn 850ssm as ive just been given one only been used once so just wanting to know what they are like as im trying to decide on if i go get a rod to match it or just keep it in the cupboard as a spear alsi if i should loan it up with mono or braid? Any info much appreciated. Thanks

They are good reels, get a rod and use it, they can take a caning too.

Yes, excellent reel, rugged, reliable, a classic really. Mono for surfcasting/rocks etc, braid if using for poppering/stickbaits. Up to you. Get a decent 8ft rod for casting poppers etc, or a 7ft if using on a boat for general fishing. |

| Got my Penn 850 from the States about 20 years ago and still use it. Rugged and reliable. Its heavier than the current run of reels, but is good for mono or braid. |

Ive had my 850ssm for about 7 years and totally agree, its one armour plated tank! never thought of it for poppers until this thread, might give it a go just need to find a rod any sugestions?

good snapper set ups i run one plus 2x 950,s and a 760 liveliner but you will kill them jigging.
bail arm stud screws have a tendency to loosen causing roller and washer assembly etc to
find there way into the bottom of your boat never to be seen again. This has happened
twice to me and to a mate that has one. Plus the handle knob studs snap at the thread,
(i,ve snapped four).. and no i,m not rough on my gear and it ain,t corrosion either it,s just
to much force on them little bolts when momentarily winding under load as you sometimes do occasionally from getting out of sync while jigging. i have since re tapped handle and used bigger studs, so far so good but i don,t jig with them anymore as upgraded.
however they are sweet for general fishing and have a reasonably smooth drag and also
well priced

whoops i remembered now it was my 950 that gave me grief with bail arm/handle etc
during a jigging session last summer, was running 80lb braid and using 400grm jigs.
(the 850 i run 30lb mono for straylining). when both my 950 handles crapped out i threw on 850
handle and broke that too. sorry brain fade.
i should mention though apart from the minor problems associated with them the 950
has accounted for some kings to 20-25kg and my mate even scored a 35kg king using one at
the ranfurlys last year.
back to the topic the 850 has been a good little outfit for straylining matched to an ugly stick black tiger in it,s early life, now i use it on a penn gt7001 8-15kg 7ft rod and also it doubles as a
surfcasting reel

| once upon a time they came with two spools. I topped one with 10kg braid, the other has 15kg mono. great all rounder for boat, surfcasting and stray lining. I still buy 'just one more reel', but the 850 has outlived quite a few of them. |

I've got 2 950's One with braid one with mono. I use them for boat and rocks surfcasting. Find them brilliant. Simple and tough and had no troubles in the 3 years I've had them. |
