Just heard through the grapevine that a container ship may have run aground on Astrolabe Reef off Tauranga. This is not confirmed at this stage. Will let people know if I hear anymore.

I have been looking for official word, but I did get a txt at 2.30am this morning saying a 240m container ship ran aground (parked on the Lab) doing 17knts... Source works for the port..so I fear it is true. Were other comments about outcome but I guess (hopefully) they may change with some light on the situation now.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/5734776/Container-ship-strikes-reef - http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/5734776/Container-ship-strikes-reef LATEST: A large
container ship has struck a reef off the coast of Tauranga this morning, with
two cargo holds reportedly flooded.
Rena, a Liberia-flagged 235m vessel, was heading to Tauranga from Napier when
it crashed in to the Astrolabe Reef, about 7km north of Motiti Island, around
2.20am.
A Maritime New Zealand spokesman said there were reports two cargo holds were
flooded and the vessel was on a 12-degree lean.
The tanks containing the ship's heavy fuel oil were reportedly undamaged.
There was nothing to suggest there was a leak in the vessel at this stage,
the spokesman said.
There were 25 people aboard the ship, and no reports of injuries have been
received.
The Marine Pollution Response Service (MPRS) had been called and trained
spill responders with equipment were heading to Tauranga this morning.
Members of the National Oiled Wildlife Response Team were also on their way.
Maritime NZ was working with the crew and had also activated its Maritime
Incident Response Team, which was monitoring the situation from Wellington and
had a safety inspector on board.
MPRS, with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, was coordinating a flight over
the area scheduled for around 8am to further assess whether the vessel was
leaking.
It was low tide in Tauranga at 8am, with high tide at 2.30pm. The weather was
fine, with light winds and the chance of some showers.
In August the Australian Maritime Safety Authority ordered the Rena detained
for over a day.
The 32-year-old ship was found in Freemantle to have a number of serious
deficiencies including defective hatchway cover, and incorrectly stowed cargo.
"Vessel has not been maintained between surveys," the Australian official
report said.
It was allowed to sail as hatch covers were secured.

heads should roll is an understatement, with all the alarms ringing all over the ship how did no one hear the warnings, enough is enough, if we have 1 of these so called accident (more like gross negligence, a year for 10 years you can only imagine the destruction to our local structures. Enough is enough time to drastically change the way ships are brought into the harbour and local areas, Hopefully and i mean hopefully we dont see a major loss of oil or waste into our waters! Have heard through the grapevine oil spilling atm is only from shafts not the main hold so really crossing fingers on this update. still no oil is acceptable in the water!

Well, that ain't going to float off on the high tide. If fact, I would go as far as saying that it won't be moving off there for a considerable amount of time. The reef is basically under the ship, the bit of white water you see in the vid is on the edge of the reef plateau and the ship is basically sitting right on top of the reef...
Lots and lots of assessors coming to NZ to look at it, not good at all... If there is a big blow in the next few days stand by, that will not be nice!

Well, at least not in this case. It's like the christmas angle, gets dragged out once a yaer to have a tree jammed up it's bum.
In this particular example the tree is the reef and, well you get the idea about the rest.
If there's a tide high enough to refloat that thing Tauranga's beaches will be a scuba diver's paradise. I'll be able to drive my boat home and tie it up on my chimney...

Charging along at 17knots and then hitting the reef would have pushed it on fairly hard, seeing as it also hit around high tide doesnt make it any better.

my moneys on a tanker getting there in the next couple of days to start pumping the heavy fuel off and then a barge with a huge crane on it getting towed there from maybe Aussie to start lifting the containers onto another barge. Then they will need to pull it off with about 4 huge tugs which we dont have in NZ as well. If it survives that and is still floating then its a patchup job before a long haul to a aussie to dry dock. But my money is on a storm in the next couple of weeks what is going to break its back and then it will need to be cut up on the spot. Get use to seeing it for the next couple of years id say

yes, it's not looking good , and as I used to work on those things on the wharf, i think i counted 8 or 9 boxes high, there's no way they are going to get those off with any sort of ease,
Will see what my mates from the wharf think in a couple off days, the word will be like wild fire in that place ,
Interesting one this one, I always thought it would happen one day but not quite that size of vessel
Mind you, I might put in a contract to unload, I can get the foremen and the men with box removal experience

There are a few vessels floating around with odd names, "Wanna Bhum" is one the springs to mind. Dont believe me? Google it . The sad thing about this vessel grounding is that there are over 2000 containers on the vessel and they are going nowhere in a hurry. bigger tides last 4 days of this month, then again at the end of november. expect to see it there till either one of those times. depending on how fast they can offload containers etc to lighten it up and get some suitable pulling units to drag it.

An aerial observation flight this morning has confirmed oil leakage from the cargo vessel Rena overnight has led to a light oil slick stretching 2km. Maritime New Zealand says the oil leak is in a narrow strip seeping away from the ship grounded on the Astrolabe Reef near Motiti Island. Rena struck the Astrolabe Reef at 2.20am on Wednesday.
Maritime New Zealand’s National Response Team was advised of the leak at about 10pm yesterday and plans were put in place overnight to prepare for responding at first light. The national on-scene commander, Rob Service, says the flight this morning confirmed a slick of very thinly spread oil streaming from the vessel. “The oil is very thin and it appears it is starting to break up and disperse naturally.” Rob says the oil had leaked during pumping operations last night. The National Response Team has set up a command centre at Bay of Plenty Regional Council and is assessing what the next steps will be. Supplies from the national oil spill response equipment stockpile arrived in Tauranga overnight and have been readied for deployment this morning. “While reports of a leak are unfortunate, they are not unexpected," says Rob. “We were lucky in the sense that we had all of yesterday to get the team to Tauranga and get plans, equipment and people in place. “We are ready to launch whatever level of response the situation requires.” The 236m cargo vessel struck the Astrolabe Reef near Tauranga Harbour at 2.20am yesterday. The Astrolabe Reef is about 4 nautical miles north of Motiti Island (about 12 nautical miles off the coast). A Marine Pollution Response Service is working with council and environmental agencies and planning is underway to manage any impact on wildlife in the area. Wildlife experts from Massey University went on an observation flight over the vessel yesterday to assess wildlife populations in the area. They are working with local specialists, including the Department of Conservation to plan how to manage any affected wildlife.

The box dogs will probably be jammed at that list, but they are cast iron and can be snapped off, not sure what will happen or how they would get on getting the boxes lashing bars of they are carbon steel ,
they should be able to lighten the bow sections and she would be able to pump her ballast water around her ballast tanks.
I think she hit dead on and the swung round on the reef if she had swung the other way she may have pulled herself off.
i think its hard up and not getting in port for a while , good bit of work for some one ,
top water-siders and foremen in this port they will be able to get the boxes moved
i would get some stevedoring foremen on the job to get a plan going,
all the heavy boxes should be down below top boxes should be the liter ones
explosives or dangerous goods should be on the bow stowed as far away from the crew as possible
Kevin Wright and Paul McQueen would be my pick

This is the Captain speaking.
I just want to correct u all on a number of points that have been directed at me on this post.
#1 I was not drunk or asleep at the wheel.
#2 I was rodgering my cabin boy, who's hands's happened to be tied at the wheel
#3 I was not getting enough penetration, so decided to speed the ship up, and hit somthing
solid, thus giving me the extra ooommmmpphhhh needed to finish the job.
I have since realised my mistake, and realise it is now my turn to be pentrated ruthlessly, without
lube, by all concerned parties.
I know some positives will come from my error, I just cant think what they might be.
PS if anyone knows of in maritme shipping positions coming up please call me on 0800CAPTAINBUTTHOLE

Reckon some of you should learn how to spell before ranting on forums...how can anyone take your opinion seriously if it's written like an illiterate child?
Or at least take the time to let the forum spell checker fix it up a little, what a mess!

Let's not get too serioous about the spelling
It is not a spelling test on here, and let's remember their a bigger and more important things to worry about in Tauranga.
Like a big Ship on a reef and a cabin boy with a sore Bum!!!
You wouldn't be a school teacher by any chance? That's how it came across like you were telling people off!!

Really, telling people off?...you can't be told off for something you haven't done, so unless you're guilty...it was a passing comment, if I went out in public and spoke the way some people spell, I wouldn't be understood, on a forum, the written word, and therefore the spelling, is the language, I was merely suggesting that if someone wanted to be understood/taken seriously, they should take the time to say it in a way that can be easily understood, but of course, you'd already know that with your vast amount of forum experience...as you were,
