3rd boated fish in 4 days - getting over-kill in my opinion.
The Billfish Moratorium policy was that 50%of the recreational catch be tagged. Definitely not happening this season - don't give the politicians a chance to open the billfish back to the commercial sector.
That's why.

i thought 70% of fish had to be tagged? I have no problem with people boating fish (i took my first last week) but 3 in 4 days is getting silly

Roy, the moratorium agreement regarding the tagging of 50% of marlin was broken by the commercial's very soon after it was agreed upon when they started targeting broadbill on the grounds that the recreational peopel fished alot i.e. Poor Knights Rise, Garden Patch etc. The 50% has no standing anymore and has not had for many years, it is a good goal but not a requirement.
In years where there are plenty of marlin along the coast (wish we had that out of Tauranga) many marlin are caught by boats who do not catch many and arew often the anglers first and they want to keep a couple for eating. I am sick of this attitude of some people that they all have to be tagged and question anybody who keeps a couple without knowing the full story, the fish may have been tail wrapped and died or hooked in the eye etc etc etc or they just wanted to keep it, good on them if they did.

Good points vance and kezza and definately taken on board, especially Kezza's point of "in his oppinion". Thats why these forums are so great because fisho's can share their oppinions. Personally i would (although i will probibly never be in the position to make this call) never consider taking 3 marlin in a season let alone in 4 days. This has nothing to do with MUA but just my personal stance.

Posted By: Kezza
Date Posted: 05 Feb 2012 at 3:03pm
Right on Murtie....perhaps instead of 3 in 4 days look at it as 3 in 365 days....;)....or 3 for 100s of thousands in investment....all then becomes dandylion fields, rainbows and fluffy bunnies after that...

Ocean Monarch sending fish in for weighing.

FishB8
1st fish was anglers 1st (acceptable)
2nd fish was first fish for season for boat owner (acceptable)
3rd fish on 24kg tagged and tried to be revived unsuccesfully (also acceptable)
as I said best to get the full story

The commercials didn't break the agreement - swordfish were excluded for it - not sure if that was an oversight but they aren't classed as a marlin.
Is Rana a charter boat - if so no probs but you can keep on going on to find an excuse to keep boating  marlin.
I'm staying on my high horse because that's MY opinion. But, if we are lucky enough to snag a marlin later this month - 1 will be taken between 4 anglers and yes we have taken our one fish and pulled in a dead one..which also got smoked.
Don't I hear on the ITM Fishing Show that it's good to limit your catch?

good to hear it is coming along for you boys, hope you get into them, with this release thing Roy, got to remember it's nation wide and it is up to the angler, I know one guy took 8 or was it 9 last season none went to waste.
There has been good numbers already released and this will continue, what is a pity is the fact we dont see pure tag and release competitions and we are still seeing sharks hanging from the gantry, we held a very successful one a few years ago and people complained that they had to release them to be in the comp, they found it hard to believe, each to there own if you choose to keep one or ten who are we to say you cant,

Saw about a dozen marlin tagged by mates, including my first 4, before the first was weighed - that died on me.
My opinion - you won't change that.
Fish for the future - sounds like a lot of fishing for today!Question

I would be interested to know what the percentage of tagged fish are ever caught again .If the percentage is as low as i guess it is then either there are so many marlin out there that taking a few makes no differenceor the tagged fish are dying in which case even hooking playing and releasing any should be questioned

May I remind you again this is a forum update for Waihau Bay? If anybody wants to start an argument they should either pick the fights somewhere else or write to a magazine to express their opinions. This argument keeps popping up and only leads to a few people getting upset. Let's just talk about the subject this thread has been started for
