Couple questions here guys, What effect does heat have on your spin reel? Or I guess, should you rest a reel for a while after its been given a thrashing by a fish? Should you get it looked at if its been given a right thrashing? I've got a little Catalina 4500 and it (and I) got taken to the cleaners by a fish on a long 150m plus run. After wards I took the spool off to throw the spare on that was rigged up and ready to fly and I noticed how hot the inner spool and main shaft were. I've never really checked how hot they get before so I don't know if it was normal or not. After it cooled down I checked it again and it still seems smooth and nothing is bent or out of shape. The only sign is that the grease on the main shaft as obviously been hot and somewhat pooled at the rotor. I'll just re-grease it and keep using it but my thought was on the day when your out on the water would it be worth resting the reel and using something else while it cools down or would you just keep going on the same one and eventually I'm sure it would cool down but what are the chances of damaging the reel? ------------- http://www.legasea.co.nz" rel="nofollow">

High drag and long runs will heat up all drags (maybe not hoopdi-dooper ones, not sure about that), but on game reels this happens a lot. I think the larger the drag washers though, the less effect this has. Got a marlin or two on an old Penn Senator 9/0, man, after that the sideplates of the reel were real hot! Used to be a common thing to see game reels getting a bucket of water over them to try to cool them off. Been so long since I did any serious amefishing, not sure if the latest reels still get affected like that. I suspect not ... at least, not as much certainly. |

Funny you should mention that, myth busters did a peice on reels catching fire. They sped away at over 70 kms for 1km on an old Penn inter. Heats got upto about 200f, smoke everywhere but no flame, so they put more line on & repeated for 2kms at 70 miles squirting oil on the reel at the same time got upto 450f, smoking hard but no flame, mono melted. Obviously thats extreme & I think the the line & reel were obviously rooted, but a 100metre burst by a local freight train on a decent reel would be sweet? ask someone like swordfish steve or one of the other resident experts. ------------- All fishermen are liars except for you and me, and to tell you the truth, I'm not sure about you, hahaha |

| Kingies aren't gonna cook a drag or a reels internals on a quality spin reel bro. Sure drag washers wear out but the heat generated during a battle from a fish targetted with an appropriate reel for the job isn't gonna cook. Have seen photos of bent main shafts on Expeditions/Dogfights from battles with GT's running drag pressures in excess of 20kg but for what we have here in NZ you have nothing to worry about. |

| I use a saltiga 4500 blast with carbon upgrade drag. Catalina is an exact copy of the saltiga blast. Has been a great topwater and jigging reel. It has been warm but nothing to worry about. The carbon drags wont burn out either and give me round 13kg which is ample for top water as its usually a little futher to the reef than jigging.. |
