Subject: Fuel filters, Which ones the best

Am thinking of replacing my fuel filter on the boat as I was out on another boat and saw one that had a clear section on the bottom to view the amount of water.

Whats the best recommendation for a petrol fuel filter and approximate costs?
regards JB

yes definitely a racor type filter with a glass bowl at the bottom, approx cost is $150 for the kit and the replacement elements are around $50.

If it was me I would use the Racor fuel filters, for petrol if im not mistaken you have a couple of options, but id go with the one where you can see the fuel "Clear bowl" at the base of the filter, and drain the water out of it.
The cartridges arn,t cheap but Racor are probably the best around. you can even get sensors for them that go into the clear bowl and have either an alarm or light to tell you when to drain the bowl when there is too much water present.
Im sure the cartridge codes for petrol are S3213, S3214, S3227 if my memory is correct

Can't remember the costs for these sorry.

Ring Parker Hannifin in Mt Wellington and they will advise you of a nearest dealer to you. They won't deal direct with the public only authorised dealers

If you are running a fuel injected engine I would definitely get the clear bowl style filter setup. There is some guy on TM selling them for ~$90 which is pretty good. When buying the  actual filters you can use Racor, Sierra, Mallory and probably a couple of other brands that all fit the same housing and bowl. Filters are about $50 a pop. There are some people who recommend going to 2 micron filters for injected engines, and if you change the filter every 100 hrs I would think about this. I going to 2 micron, always carry a spare filter in the boat as well and rotate the spare by using it as your next 100hr change etc. Good idea to do even with 10 micron filters etc, but with 2 micron I would definitely do this.

If you already have a water separator, you dont need to buy the whole set up, you can replace the filter with a filter and clear bowl.

Then just replace the filter annualy after that.

I use and recommend sierra, have inspected cut open ones matched with racor, and in some areas to me they look superior, and much cheaper.
