Anyone know where i can spear some eels in the hutt river? remember some under silverstream bridge, But that was a while ago..

Hey Jordan mate .... if you want to eat them fine but if only after
a bit of sport suggest you google search NZ eels & you probably
realise, as I did that they are desrving of protection.
Firstly we have the largest eels in the world also a couple of species
that are unique to NZ but sadly pressure from commercial harvesting
has seen numbers & average size to reduce dramatically.
Am sure you will find rather than simply slimey wriggly obnoxious things
that they lead a very intersting life .... for instance did you know after
most of the males turn into females ... they travel all the way to Tonga
to breed then die up there leaving the tiny offspring called glasslings to
travel back to NZ in the ocean currents?
The really large specimens found here are barren females that have not
yet made the trip to breed.

Eeling for sport is pretty fun (I don't fancy eating them). They can be pretty clever though as most that i have encountered head straight into the rocks  so a decent sized line is in order. Some of them seem to give up closer to the surface but will quickly zoom of once released. But yeah you don't really seem to find really big ones these days so it'd be best to be a bit conservative about it  .

we managed to net one when white bating right below the ewen bridge was let go after a few classic moments snaps if you want to se some big eels and i mean big head up the whaktikie river. went for a hunt up there and saw some huge ones. ------------- Gidday Mate |

Saw an eel take out a sparrow last night
 Was amazing too witness the death roll
 Got more pics if anyones interested but none of the death roll as it was too fast.
