Well for a couple of reasons i left work early today. Took my family out to my parents close to a beach and a fewmud banks. Put my 16 month old boy down to bed and left the wife on the beach with a magazine.
This is when i found my 15 year old 200 dollar fly rod combo, i scratched through the tackle box sitting with it and  found a few good looking flies too bad the hooks had been snapped off due to poor casting in the past. One was still intact though and thought it might apeal to a flounder.

As i wondered around to my favorite flounder hole the light was perfect, so was the wind/none. The tide had bottomed out about half an hour before and the water was starting to move in getting all the crabs up out of their homes ready for the flounder to eat.
I walked about 15 metres i spooked a beuaty, it took off. I hadnt got my eye in yet and was a bit pissed off. I could spot about 40 feet in front of me the water was about a foot and a half deep.
Went another 15 metres sighted 2 big yellow bellys moving in feeding together .Got a cast into the first one and in true muppet fasion the fly line landed hard right on top of the fish what a **** up. It was the first time i had ever seen a flounder jump in the air before it took off, huh gutted!! the second was still there. I made 12 casts perfect. pulled right infront of it the bloody thing. It already new i was there though so they were all in vein. Ended up waiting for it to swim over my fly and tryied to jag the barstard. Same result.   Flounder_Mack10 Outerhere.
Another 15 metres and another fish spotted  this one was a good 30 feet away  feeding moving slowly , i  made a cast 10 foot past and ahead abit. I started to work the fly  back on the line the fish was running, i paused the fly a couple of times when the flounder saw it which worked a treat. the thing pounced like a cat, ..a flat cat.  After a huge fight i managed to subde the fish, where i stored it on my pinkie before carrying on with the stalk.
5 more metres made another presentation, this was another fattie i made two casts one was almost good enough to be eaten. Then out of the corner of my eye i saw another  massive 400mm yellabelly  feeding agresively like a marlin on a meat ball but not quite.  It was only two feet off my rod tip. I flicked the fly , teased it in front and sure enough he smashed it.   It was like the king bank but it was the mud bank and the flounder were stacking up on my left hand and in front of me. I sighted 10 plus fish all big girls.
Finished up with just the two from about 5 that i presented to Cool to see them eat it on such a nice day when you couldnt get any where near them with a spear.  Well  havent done that in a while. Not quite the blistering power of a sword but still a bit of fun.

if they are fat enough fillet them and cook in bread crumbs, may need to cut edges of fillet to stop them curling up..flounder  taste different filleted compared to cooked as a whole fish

Good stalking and it's given me the inspiration to take a Fly Rod out on the Muddy on those still windless days.  Just another dimension of fun to add to the repertoire.

Nice report and interesting. I have done a lot of fly fishing and would never have thought to target flounder.

After the long fight that you finaly subdued the massive yellow belly did u slap that 12 inch flying gaff in its shoulder or did you tail rope it? just struggling with the logistics mate!

I actually had one of those whale harpoon things with the detatchable head that the americans use for swords and halibut/angry hal.
That was obviously conected to some 1000pound 316/5 strand wire  before it was spliced onto some low stretch rope and clipped onto my belt buckle. I made a harpoon holder before i went out, out of some pvc, Stapped it over my back to ensure it didnt getin the way of the cast.
