Pure Fishing will, or have, started bringing in Sebile hard body lures in to NZ of a size that should be sweet for snapper. We use to use these in the US to good success for all sorts of species, species that we also used to target with on Gulps. I'm hoping since most of us have had success with Gulps we therefore might still do alright on the Hard Bodies... Guess time will tell.
So far I've only got the trolling and vibrating blades and caught plenty of snapper on them this summer, and had by catch of snapper on various rapalas cast and retrieved from the rocks back in the days so can't wait to get my hands on some more styles.
Incidentally, I had some awesome days using those vibrating blades as the sinker and attaching my softbait and worm hook to the rear via a split ring. I dunno if I was doin any better than either style on their own but it was fun to try something different and still catch.

weve been using the sebiles  and so far they have worked well, they seem to sink very well even in 30/40 mtrs which i thought would be thier down fall.they have a mean action and send off a vibration that will be dynamite on kingies .

I would look no further than the bream fisherman in Aussie, they use hard body lures to great effect...Spinner baits may even be worth looking into...

Bream Lure – Bushy’s Stiffy Minnow
Bushy's Stiffy Minnows...

Bream Lure - Smith Towadi Top Water Plug
Smith Towadi Plug... Walk the dog bait.

I think it is cool how NZ is picking up on lure fishing, is it for the sport or are we just lucky to have a fishery like we do?

I guys , in the photos are some lures I have been using for casting on the reef up here on Cape York , [ they are a casting lure ,]  I have caught a number of different fish on them  , I started to use them late in our fishing season last year  , and I found them to work very well when I wanted to have a lure to get down deep , what I do is cast them out and let them sink to where i want them , then wind them in  , so here is the info on them , they are 200mm long and weight 80 grams , they have a Magnetic weight tranfer system in side that aids in casting , the metal balls move down to the tail where there is a magnet that holds them in place so all the weight is at the tail for casting , and dudes do these things cast , when you retieve them the weight tranfers to the front , they are a very strong lure , I had a hell of a job breaking one open with a hammer , I wanted to see the insides , I also think these would work well on kingfish .

Hmmm...Have you got any spinner baits that use a SP shad or similar? maybe they would be the go? They just look so bloody good and catch a lot of fish all over the world...I am going to fish one just like a plastic or just leave one in the rod holder...Cuda would eat one!LOL

I caught Snapper on vibrax spinners before. If a snapper happily grab soft lures and even Jigs I see absolutely no reason why other hard body lures would not also work. Assuming one can get them deep enough.

Was on ebay yesterday stocking up on "crankbaits" for trout fishing and garbed half a dozen Yo-Zuri Livebait Minnow Jigs, mainly to try on Kahawai at the river mouth but also going to try them on Snapper.  I am not entirely certain wither its a Jig or a hardbody lure but I am certain something would smash them and they were only double the price of a locally brought hex spinner.

I own a small pile of different hard lures and most of the time my Rapalas are still the go to lure, Although I do prefer the YoZuri Mag series for distance casting . While expensive lures do catch fish I do not beleive they work better enough to justify the higher price. The best cheap lure I have tried is the Storm Wildeye, only shy away from them because had quite a few trout hooked in the gill area.

Hi RAL.... mostly just the ones similar to those you have pictured. Kilwell were clearing out a heap of their stocks of these, and I got about 20 of different types then.I have popped soft plastics on the tail of ones I have used in the past, the firsttime I was using them would have been .....hell, 10-15 years ago perhaps, I used them with berkley scampi (the twin tailed things?), the 1st of the powerbaits we were able to get here at the time... they look awesome in the water, and I know they love them in the states, but I just couldn't get a touch on them.
Same old thing though, use them when nothing else seems to be working, and then act all surprised if they don't work either, I am sure we have all done that! :-)
I really thought they would get nailed around the mangroves in the sollies though, but nothing, while Joe who was using the standard old halcos was getting hit repeatedly, and as soon as I swapped back, so did I.
I would feel a lot happier using one if you could somehow get the hook a good couple of inches back further from the spinner, not directly under it. Maybe using a small assist hook or something to extend back a little, with an SP on that....

Gidday Mitch,John gave me a Sebile flat shad to try out, used it down at BOP and got 4 strikes on it ,manly small snappas,it was very light so took a while to sink, just used it in thr RH on the 704,didnt hook up a couple of times cause i had the drag to light, reckon it will come into its own once the warm up starts

got one like the one on the right.

Shhhhhhhh my secret's out. I have only fished hard bodies this autumn and winter, lots of guys doing really well on the Snaps over here in OZ. I've asked Grunta, to set up a hard body sub forum so we can share some hard bod info. Lots of cool new lures to play with, it's gunna be an interesting spring that's for sure.

s/b gear is fine mitch, ive been using heavier gear like a 6kg rod with 12pd braid and 30pd fluoro. This mainly because i dont want to loose any.The ability to skull drag if around a reef would also be an advantage

How about these,...

little vibro-max or somethnig lures, just smaller blade type lures, similar in shape but perhaps not so meaty as the sebiles, i have used them here, no joy on snaps but plenty of kahawai and skippies though.... (this is a little bonito at norfolk)

Here's a couple of lures that are worth having a cast with for snaps. The koolie minnow will dive to 50ft when trolled, lots of guys doing well slow trolling these on yaks for snapper in OZ. I've caught snapper and many other species on the Magic swimmer. The Spin Shad and the Vibrato work well on a wide range of fresh and salt water species, especially when they are schooled up down deep.

Sebile Spin Shad  1 1/4 ounce

            Sebile 110 FSK

            Sebile Vibrato

Captain A. Spinnerbaits will work for kahawhi......eventually!They can be very frustrating to hook on them though.I have spent years trying to catch them on the dam things & have found that if you thread on a stinger hook onto the main, secured with a small piece of silicone tubing the hookup rate increases big time. They attract kahawhi well but they just seem to nip at the back of the skirts without getting hooked & also if they do hook up they usually jump & shake the spinnerbait out.Not a very clear photo but hope you can see the hook arrangement.

Posted By: Capt Asparagus
Date Posted: 29 Aug 2011 at 4:49pm
Yes, I think with some method of dropping a hook further back, so that the hook was well behind the spinner, or at the least, behind the hard wire "frame" of the spinner bait, then they would probably work.
However, I also have to wonder, if we were not so determined to make the damn things work, and swapped to.... small jigs? chromes? bibbed minnows? Soft plastics? we would have caught 30 times as many kahawai than have fallen to the spinner baits! :-)
It is really like saying that you can catch snapper on stickbaits....well, yes, you can, but a packet of pillies or gulp would catch an awful lot more.... :-)
Still, it is the fun of trying new things out that is a big part of this fishing addiction we have, eh! :-)

I like to play with different things, keeps me interested. I have experimented with many different spinning bladed lures on Snapper. Most consistent results seem to have been tail spinners rather than traditional spinnerbaits. Spinnerbaits seem to work if you get rid of he skirt and slide a four inch Gulp minnow up behind the head. Some spinner baits are made with bait keepers moulded into the back of the head for this purpose. The end result is a soft bait that has scent, vibration and flash-pretty cool, although some of the wire frames are not that strong. Blade shape will also effect sink rates.

I have also played around a lot with rattles. Some of the best hard body lures on the market utilise rattles in their design so it made sense to try them out with soft baits. Hybrid lures are something I think we will see more of in the future, mmmm, more toys to play with!Wink

Date Posted: 30 Aug 2011 at 12:38am
Spinnerbaits will break down rather quickly if you continuously throw them in the salt. The gear is made for freshwater and simply won't stand up to the repeated punishment. I tend to look more towards vibration baits and blades if targeting snapper on hards, or the lucanus style jigs.

Certainly looks very interesting!
Saw a whole bunch of the Sebile hardbaits yesterday, they are very interesting indeed. Poppers look better in hand than on pictures, and there are some very weird looking stick-bait type ones! Can't wait til we get a chance to buy some here....

Some very cool topwater lures in the Sebile line up Capt A, this is the Bonga minnow

The Bonga Jerk, this lure will troll at 20 Knots

The Stick Shad, comes in Floating, suspending and sinking models

The Ghost Walker, these things swim awesome

The Splasher has a keel built into the bottom of the lure which allows it to be walked as well as popped. Even the 52mm version of the splasher works really well. The Nomad boys smash the GT's on the bigger models over here. I think you guys will have some fun with the topwater Sebile stuff.

Posted By: Capt Asparagus
Date Posted: 31 Aug 2011 at 2:38pm
I saw the big ones of those Bonga jerks.... they are BIG man! in the pics, they look like lures that must fit in the palm of your hand or something, but no, they ain't- the lure itself is about the size of your whole hand, bottom hook about where your thumb knuckle is, tail hook the end of your index finger, tie on at around your wrist.
Makes them one very deep-bodied lure. It is one I want to try, just to see if the fish will hit it, and how they hook up on it! I was told they can troll up to about 8kn on them due to their depth, and the keel effect of that bottom fin-thing. Somethnig else worth looking at.
The poppers look very interesting too.
Liked the small lures too, i want to give 'em a go around bommies and stuff, should be good I reckon.

Its funny how things change I remember circa 2005/06 a now passed from member http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/member_profile.asp?PF=47511&FID=5 - Krill put up a topic/ comment in a thread re using spinners as the Aussies had been doing for yonks and it didnt go down well at the time as SP's were just picking up steam LOL.

Those bloody Aussies always seem to just that little bit further on (and thats no reference to the Rugby) LOL

Posted By: Capt Asparagus
Date Posted: 31 Aug 2011 at 4:38pm
The aussies are lucky though.... they have a lot more lure-munching species and different habitats than we do here. They have the freshwater bass and cod that spinnerbaits were developed in the US for over there, they have great mangrove fish predator species (flatheads, jacks, bream etc) that we don't have, and they have right up into the tropics for all sorts of aggressive lure-eating critters that we don't have.
But our fish have prettier smiles, and nicer personalities.

Hi Capt A, Sebile lures come fitted with good quality trebles, the Flat shad snagless comes fitted with a belly mounted double. The singles I have been using are made by Decoy, the Flat shad seems to work fine with either configuration.

Just a small tip I picked up. If you want to try giving your lure more action (if it needs it), and you're using a spin reel, use your finger to hold the line close to the rod near the spool, and wind up. Makes it pulse like an injured fish.

Not at all - when I first looked at the set-up I was a bit sceptical but it was damn effective. We were drifting in 35m with plenty of wind so no option but to add some weight. I guess you could always add a weight say above a swivel and then run a trace but not sure how that effects the action. Anyone got any ideas on weighting these things in situations like that??

Graham Andrews of Kilwell was trying to introduce a range of lead-crystal sinkers a while back that would have been ideal for using with this sort of rig I think... sadly, the samples I got off him are now up in the islands. I was trying to figure out a less intrusive way of adding weight to these sebiles as well, that (as you have there grunta) was the only way I could think of too.
Was gonna try to sort out a little more this week, but the damn weather has blitzed that.

Posted By: albert wild
Date Posted: 13 Dec 2011 at 2:44am
Hi Grant, there is a couple of ways you can add weight to a flatshad to increase it's sink rate and retain good presentation. The first is applying thin adhesive lead strip to the belly. We do this with many hard body lures to adjust their buoyancy and sink rates. You can add multiple layers for extra weight, just test swim the lure until you get the result you are after. It's available in most good tackle stores in OZ. You can also wrap some lead solder wire around the main shank of each treble, this also works well. Take your time and keep everything balanced and it works fine. The lure Mike was using is an SK version, to get down faster you can go to the 96mm XH-SK that weighs 60grams- it sinks twice as fast

Posted By: Joker

I think the sinker on top of the lure will slide down the line away from the lure on the sink then once it gets to the bottom the lighter lure will flutter down after. I use this on 1/2oz jig heads in deeper water and its very effective on snapper. Having the weight there doesnt seem to affect its efficiency.

These things are alot of fun, only taken it out once but caught a bunch of kahawai, got a couple of snapper but found them really hard work on snaps compared to microjigs etc, will try with a sinker as above, that will save me losing interest in waiting for it to sink LOL
