Im looking at getting a set of pliers for opening large split rings.

What are people using? or would recomend.

Are the jigtalk ones the same as the "black magic" ones onthe market?

How do the BMagic ones hold up to alot of use? heard they can become "sloppy" in the joint with moderate amount of use.

The older version of the Black Magic ones had a problem with getting loose after a while but apparently the newer improved ones that have been out since late last year are better. For the last 6 months used a set of berkley ones which are ok but dont cut fine braid that well but have just got some Asari ones and they open the heavy owner split rings easily as well as cutting fine 10lb braid well so all good.

Get the berkley ones, the old style ones though with the eva handles. Not the shiny cherry red alloy ones. The older style plated/stainless pliers are about $50 cheaper than the flash ones, are far far stronger, and the cutters work just fine and dandy. Looked it up, Berkley Select Pro are the buggers. They do not look nearly as flash, but they are without doubt stronger. Open the biggest split rings with ease as well.

I personally am onto my third pair of black majic ones i wouldnt recomend  them its only the fact i keep taking them back and getting them replaced that i still use em , i think they are el cheapo sourced from indo chino and re branded you see them all over ebay and such with different names . the cutters stop working instantly and they bend and distort after a bit of use . In a word CRAP they should stop selling them or lower the price to reflect how long they last . the owner ones seem to be quite good

What do you do with them to make em bend and distort ? they are for opening spit rings not removing hooks or pulling nails out of the wall :D

Had a set of the larger ones for 2 years + now with no problems. they have done allot of work and still good as new.

As I said, Berkley Select Pro's. :-)
If used PURELY for split rings, then yes, the BM ones can last OK. I just use mine for cutting stuff actually, seldom for split rings. Their long-nose shape makes them just too tempting to use for hook removal though, and the noses are too long, any twisting and they will distort.
The Berkley Select pros do not. At all. Solid, and (relatively) cheap.

There only two worth a dam
Duel GT Pliers (need to be oiled but cut braid like butter and will open any ring)
Fisherman Big Game Pliers (Wont rust but will hurt ones wallet)
IMHO the Duels operate better except for the rusting issue

maybe you got a good batch of them my first pair the head of the screw holding the braid cutting blades broke off first trip out, second pair didnt last much longer slopped out didnt cut anything and jaw tips didnt allign properly , third pair all of the above happened maybe i am hard on my gear or maybe its just cheap chinese crap rebranded with a huge markup on it at least they keep replaceing them cant fault them on that .i will prob get sick of taking pairs back tho and accept that i paid top dollar for a lemon and fork out for a decent pair that can take my abuse ! in fact if any split ring plier manufacturers are reading this please get in touch i will be happy to product test a few sets for them Wink

I'm using the DUO pliers and yup they are mint for opening splits but haven't got the best cutters on them. Expensive too, if I wasn't so dam impulsive I probably wouldn't have them LOL

Duel GT Pliers have the best cutters I've ever seen on a SR plier. The DUO's have the best split ring opening ability and are very durable.

Like all good tools they should be used for the purpose for which  they were designed, e.g. not pulling or straightening bent hooks.

Owner gp60's should also be considered and are my preference.

do not cut braid and will rust a little, but can be bought at ok prices if shop you around. Will open any large split ring.

Dont pay 100 bucks  for owners..atleast I dont think I did. They are my favourites although I threw them over board finally after 3 years of fulltime use due to them finally missing a wash and sleeping on the boat for the weekend - they rust easy.
Some freinds bought me some DUO's for my birthday and they are very nice also.

I know this maybe stating the obvious but if they rust and don't cut braid whats good about them?

They are:-

made to be a plier. Not an anodised piece of fancy pants with soft metal under the anondising resulting in common complaints of bending. ie. are strong and simple.

can be bought for cheaper than $100. $80 ish should be plenty and can sometime be found cheaper.

have good plier type cutters on them which are fine for cutting leader etc and if you were persistent would probably surfice for cutting braid.

Are not marketed under twenty different brands with retails ranging from $40 to over $200 for the same thing.

Have the hook over the nose type of design which make them better for large split rings than the Duel and all the other Berkely type clones of that design.

Rusting can be dealt with with a bit of care.

nuff reasons?

How do people find the Burkley HD pliers for getting large owner solid rings into split rings?

The ones i looked at i thought, having the split ring half way down the plier wouldnt this make it hard to attach a large solid ring?

No, it seems to be easy enough actually. I thought it would be tricky too, but actually it ain't. Indeed I found "biting" the slit rings further down the jaws holds the split ring more firmly, makes it easier to get the larger rings into the gap without worrying about the split ring flipping over around the end of the pliers.

imo, for your standard jigging split rings, (and lighter), the design with the pointy end is best. i just find it easier and quicker than the black majic style with the hook over design which may be best for the heavy top water split rings.
braid scissors are for cutting braid.

I can vouch for these.....they also have small wedges in the jaws that prevent them from twisting or moving......my previous pair i bought didnt.....look at the spare set of blades .......go from your right about 10mm to your left and you can see the small ridges....they sit in the jaw frame of the pliers.....you can just make them out......you can see in pic of pliers as well(but only just!)...Good value...esp with the spare cutters/jaws.
