I would assume a few of you out there play underwater hockey. I've just started a few weeks back in an attempt to stave off the effects of aging and poor fitness (yeah I know that I'm fighting a losing battle). I've dug out an old pair of rubber fins and have been thrashing them around the pool but now it's time to get some new fins. Anyone got any recommendations as to what fins would be good for UWH? Thanks

Depends how big/strong you are. Proper custom UWH fins are best, but off the shelf you have: Mares/Avanti Quattro Mares/Avanti Tre Technisub Stratos In order from stiffest to softest (approximately). Where are you playing?

A lot does indeed depend on how big/strong you are. But Azazel's list is spot on for the average person not wanting to spend a fortune on a pair of UWH fins ------------- "There goes another moocher" |

Thanks for the advice. Azazel - I'd like to think I'm reasonably strong in the legs, but I'm not getting any younger. At the moment I'm just playing in what ever position the team put me in so one minute I'm forward then I'm back. I guess you'd normally go for a stiffer fast fin as a forward and a less aggressive fin as a back? Besty - I believe the theory with split fins is that they form a sort of wing under the water to channel the water as you kick but from what I've read they can lack any thrust when turning (as you do a lot in UWH) so you end up with no power to initially accelerate away. That's what I've heard anyway. Philip you may chose to disagree based on you own experience. I would imagine cutting down a pair of plastic FD fins such as the Cressi Gara 2000 would leave you with a pretty stiff pair of fins given that a reasonable amount of the multi-flex zones they design into the fins would be gone. I did think of doing this but wasn't too sure about it. Has anyone actually given it a go? Last question. What do you think about the suitability of a pair of SEAC SUB FUGA? Thanks again for your help.

I find them superior for turning but not good for speed. (But that could just be me :)) I did not get cramping though. ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

I have a pair of Gull Mews hard that are supposed to be excellent for water hockey (don't play myself), use them for free diving and scuba. They are a full foot rubber Japanese made. Bought them from Splash in Auckland, don't think they sell them anymore but they may be able to help. Excellent fins.

The Mews are okay for hockey, but would suit small players only. Those Seac Sub fins would be fine I suppose, but also lack acceleration and top speed. Quattros are the default option for anyone who has the power or size to drive them. They're tiring fins to kick, but come reasonably close to glass fins for speed. I think they're probably the most expensive option on the list though. See if you can borrow some fins at the start or end of the session from your fellow players to try a few pairs out.

If you're just starting out, most will be fine for 6-12months until you find out where you like to play and what kind of player you are. The fins that best combat lack of fittness at any level are Breir composite blades with beuchat foot pockets, about $550, pricey but much cheaper that doing all the training. ------------- BANNED from doing anything about anything anymore. |
