Hi all.... just looking for some general info on whats required to get some decent distance when casting poppers or stick-baits...  what rod length?  what leader weight and length?  I got a jigwrex 6' but I guess that's more suited to vertical jigging?? yes/no?

any help appreciated,

Cheers Jim

Hi Jim......... yeah 6' is even long for jigging but definately too short for popping, you will need 7'6" at a minimum imo
leader weight= depends on where you fish  but start at 80lb(watch your braid to mono knot doesnt damage guides during casting)
leader length= couple turns on spool through guides and 3-4' hanging out for casting distance.

Basic cheap popper rod and reel set/ Quantum Boca 80 on a fin-nor popper rod. Should be some cheap deals on these sets in the shops at the moment, and they are a pretty good, decent, rugged set-up to use.Might be a little stiff for stickbaits perhaps. Load the reel with 30lb fireline.

Thanks guys...  better go shopping tomorrow by the sound of itCry   will be fishing from Cavallis to Brett to Mokes to Needles to kawau....  those areas...   so I can go as low as 30lb braid???  would have thought 50lb better?

But anyway... thanks for the info so far..

30lb fireline breaks more like 40lb +. 50lb fireline is thick as rope, so restricts line load, but on the boca you still get plenty. That is what I had in the Sols recently anyhow.
However, if you want, you can go for normal braid, but honestly, for an intro to poppering, the fireline tends to give a more trouble free introduction to the scene.

yeah... well I guess you'd be lucky to lift 12kg with the rod...  and get 15kg drag on the reel I guess...  so maybe its not much point going past 30 - 40lb line..   all good info... thanks guys
