Was doing a bit of casting in the weekend when I busted my braid on a cast. The break happened because of a small wind knot that only briefly tangled but then unraveled itself. However the braid snapped about 1m and a half form the joining knot and the braid, leader and lure went sailing away.

The braid was Daiwa Samurai 55lb. My question is is this normal to happen as I thought it was very weird because surely there was not more than 55lb of pull on the line as it tangled momentarily. Was there a fault in the braid? Or was it just angler error? Any ideas? Or should I just respool with a different braid? Would hate fort it to part while playing a fish in open water.

Shock is a killer on braid,i could break 55lb with my hands with a quick jerk (not me, the line)

LOL ok, just me then huh, got the jerk spice casting factor. Have to go test out Mrs Palmers and give her a quick shock.

The other consideration is line twist, which can over time reduce the breaking strain of Braid. The problem tends to be more pronounced at the terminal end of the line as twists work their way here owing to the physics of casting and retreiving. Regularly working the twists out of the line will reduce its impact.

yeah that's worth considering as I was using a crimp to ring and I usually use a swivel.

Retied a little PR last night and noticed the braid was massively twisted above the knot. Braid also seems squashed flat when it is twisted, so cheers Titahi, something to think about and avoid.
