A good place to start is what kind of budget you have to work with mate...

tiagra 80w is prob the best choice  , 4 or 5 of them would be better if you want to tow a spread of lures.80 wides cost a bit more than a 50 wide but by having a full spool of 37kg line you will have the best chance of landing your fish!..good luck out there

And what sort of boat you are fishing out of - launch or fizz boat? Stand up or chair?
What sort of time are you looking at committing?
How's your stickability? Pretty bad investment if you find it all too hard after a year without success (and its around 90 hours average before you get one and what if your not average), you don't want to do it anymore - be better to invest in time on charters first and see if its your thing?

Of course once you catch one, you are completely screwed and will spend money hand over fist to get the buzz again...

but the above advice is well worth considering, lots to think about if you want to make it enjoyable, If you have the money then you cant go past the tiagra range then again you dont need to go for the big names to catch fish either, personally if this is your first season beg borrow or steal the gears.

get a feel for it as its not everyones cup of tea.Embarrassed

Im with Turtle im afraid. beg borrow steal anything you can get your hands on if you are even remotley thinking of giving it a crack ! ! ! as its is a significant investment to get into it. Rods , reals, Traces, crimping gear, gaffs, Lures ......la de la de la ! !

Get some charters under your belt 1st and then give it a crack .  El Donna with Captn Black Pete is available at some of the most affordable charter rates around if interested and are taking bookings for next season starting January. Wink  Tutukaka through and up further North. 2-3 days with Pete will have you sorted with all the old school livebaiting/skipbaiting rigging, running lures , leadering fish etc etc etc. You guys will also get to run the deck ! ! just like your own boats but with him guiding you through the process. ( Blatant Advertising ...lol )

If not , then I would suggest that you keep an eye out for Penn 50's, older ones that constantly pop up on Trademe , get them serviced by Swordfish Steve if necessary , run them for a season or two and then outlay the cash for the Shimano's.

Id have $20-30k invested in game fishing gear. Not an investment to be taken lightly

Charters are great but that does not help the man . Spin reels are for those that want to catch fish after they are broken in.

Hamish take it from me some of the guys on here are great some like having fun and at my expence I have had some sh...t sent my way but I keep comming back.

Shimano, Penn, Finnor, Makaria, plus others are all great but if you have the money buy Shimano.

TLD 50's have caught plenty of marlin Penn 9/0 have done well in the years gone but a great alround reel is 1 you buy, use, clean, and service regularly, change the line often and reuse again

The Shimano Tiagra 50 WLRS/A is at the top level and if you want go 80's they hold more line.

As said what are you fishing from as in a small boat the tld will do

Do some charters like the guys are saying, you'll learn more about what to do and how it's done and you'll also get a better feel for how it's done.

Given your intended fishing location, once you do buy something, get yourself an 80 sized Tiagra or Penn International. Your chances of hooking a blue up there are better than average and a 50 wide with either 24 or 37 kg is seriously undergunned for an average 200 kg blue. Some on here have landed blues on 50 sized reels with either 37 or 24 Kg but many many many more have lost fish on this sized reel.

You'll easily land stripies on the 50 sized reel, but like i said there's a better than average cahnce of hoooking blues up there. Why not spend a few extra pingas and be ready for them.

Just because your in a small boat does it mean you have to fish small reels. Personally I fish from a fairly small boat (5.3m) and am totally confident in fishing in the same places or conditions as any other trailer boat out there. I think we need to know where you plan to fish, as if you were to say waihau bay and you had a 8m boat everybody would be telling you to buy 80ws. There were blues caught this year from trailer boats exceeding 300kg in places accessed by anyone thinking of going gamefishing all up the East coast. Hooking fish like this with anything less than 37kg is more often than not going to end in a lost of unrecoverable dead fish. You can buy a new Tiagra 80w combo spooled for $1500 I would recommend this over the same 50w combo for 1299.

edit; "ok I re read it... Toots etc... same applies tho"

To answer your question re which shimano reel to buy, buy 2 or 3 of the dearest you can afford would be my advice.

Then spend time on here getting to know the people and learning as much as you can (but get out there and do it too), the guys on here are awesome, i did my 1st day game fishing in 09/10 season, to date i have nailed 3 of my own, wired a few, driven one, gaffed a couple and been on board for a few more as well as a few drops, thats in two seasons. Couldnt have done it if it wasnt for good basta rds off this forum.

Ask lots of questions and keep your ears open.

Bro, take some time with Lance on El Donna (thats gotta reduce the Barrier bill LOL)!
Happy to take you out for a float in our trailer boat in the season myself. Flick me a PM if you want to catch up and chat. I have limited time at this gamefishing thing but happy to share experiences, as are a few of us small boat fisherman in the Whangavegas area...

Nothing wrong with 24kg on 50s, especially in trailer boat fishing standup - you'll probably want 4 outfits  if trolling lures solely,  or combination of couple of 50s for when trolling lures and one 80/37 kg for lures and as a dedicated livebait outfit.  Can always have your snapper rod with skippy lure on out to catch a bait -still leaves 3 marlin lures in spread.  Would equip boat with outriggers if trolling lures -not so important if mainly livebaiting.

If your going 50s - the tyrnos 50 and tld 50s are good for 24 kg -just make sure you clear gear quick and get after your fish.  A tiagra 50W will give you bit more capacity -but cost more.   Tiagra 80s are best way to go for 37kg in terms of performance and resale.

Penns and Okuma Makiras, Aletecnos all good too, if you can get them at reasonable price.  Had Penns and Okuma but sold em -just cause I like Shimano best.   Have never had any real issues with Shimanos-and use em extensively -TLD50s, Tynos, tiagra 50 and 80s.   They all work pretty good and its  usually the angler and skipper that makes difference not the size of reel.
Few well proven lures and a live bait trace, some gloves and a decent gaff and your away.
Always will be more fun catching marlin from own boat than a charter.

4 TLD 50's, BM gimbal and harness couple of moldcrafts, leader, hooks, swivels and some gardening gloves you prob be sorted for around 5k.

cheaper option just 2 tld50's and a skippie rod, throw baits in where you catch them.
