What's a good price for 5kg of frozen pillys??

Anyway hope this is a good deal or else its a waste of time telling you guys!

Whangarei mad butcher has 3.6kg box of pillys for $22-$24 (I can't exactly remember) and a 5kg box for $30

Hope this saves somebody some money.

Price depends a bit on the age/quality/origin of the Pilchards. The Bait Station currently has a deal on South African Pilchards 1 kg box for $3.99, 5 x 1kg boxes for $18.75, 10 x 1kg boxes for $35.00. NZ Pilchards : 5 kg for $27.55

If your in Whangarei shoot up to Hikurangi and see the salty dog factory. We got 5kg boxs for $30 last week but they were the best pillies I have ever seen. Apparently they are only a few weeks old and they are big pillies, great size for rock fishing. I would happily pay $30 for pillies of that quality but the problem is sometimes I pay $30 and get an absolute crapper of a box!

I agree on this one. Our fish generally don't seem to like imported pillies, plus they're often substandard. Check their pedigree.

I got a 5kg box of leigh bait pillies from top catch whangaparoa for $27 and they were mint. Great size for straylining and so clean and fresh and they lasted for 4 days in my chillybin and were as good till the last pilly. Almost good enough to eat!! Wish we had a topcatch in Hawkes Bay. Sick of **** yellow bellied pillies!!!

We used Salty Dog pillys on our last 3 NZ LB trips to the east cape,
Bloody good bait,
Would not bother with the South African ones, Good for burley at best

Yeah the South African pillies are low quality but great if you salt them. I get them for $3.25 p/kg and & they work great for that. You cant use em thawed without a ton of bait cotton.
My salted pillies outfished my mate using fresh NZ pillies on the weekend, we both used tuna oil so you never really know I guess.
I even do a batch of really stinky salted pillies, the kind that makes your hands smell for days. Snapper love em!!

Leigh pillies or freshly caught pillies for me. I buy the 5kg box and break it down into smaller amounts and leave in the freezer.

The key to good pillies as bait is to get them caught and iced down with a salt ice slurry and snap frozen asap. SA pilchards are hauled out transported then frozen, and the waiting bait can be in the holds for hours and hours if not a few days at most. you know SA pilchards cause they sell em as red eye pilchards. nz pilchards are best so are the usa ones. the Canada herrings have twice as much oil as pilchards and they throw them away after getting the eggs out. wonder what they would be like as bait?

If they we're red eye we'd be paying alot more then we do.

Most of the stuff that ends up here are run of the mill pillies.  Red eye's are bigger and waaaay more oily.

When ever i'm fishing in Northland I pretty much always use salty dog pillies and have never had a problem as long as you keep them on ice in the chilli bin like any other pillie. Was using penguin pillies for a while as I can get those cheaper but was finding that the pillies were just way too BIG!

Yip completely agree about the SA Pillies...stay away from them, we bought a 10kg box and we can't get through the sh-ite. Snapper just don't fancy them...NZ pillies if you can get them all the way!

Dont think the NZ pillies have been caught to extinction as only a couple of small boats have been fishing for them out of whangarei and the qouta limit is very low and never gets caught. I have heard that another boat has recently started up that is trying to bring an even higher quality nz pilchard by individualy quick freezing them on board the vessel as soon as there caught. When the pillies pick up it will be interesting to see what the product is like. I bought a bag of salty dog pillies the other day and they seemed suspiciously similar to the south african pillies!!!!!

Prefer those NZ pillies usually sold in top catch with leigh something or other on the box. Always good quality and size but have had trouble getting 5kg boxes over the last 6months or so. Means 10kg boxes or 3kg bags.

Just to pass on that I have always found that Mitre 10 in Whangarei is the cheapest bait source in town, dunno what it is like at other Mitre10's. But $6.99 for a kilo of Pillies, penguin and salty dog, two pack of Mullet for $9.99Clap
