Looking at heading west for a change to try and target some carrots and whatever else be on the menu too.  Was looking on the maps at the tip of Cornwallis any one landbased here before? like walk around the rocks from the cornwallis beach to big sea bay?

wondering if its very fishable here or if would be better to go up to whatipu, fished whatipu before though so just after something different

Cheers

I had a walk + rods there a couple of weeks ago.
You can't walk from the wharf side around, it bluffs out pretty quickly.

Drive to the end of the road and walk up the 4WD track to the monument, from there there are a whole heap of tracks all over the headland - mostly possum trapper/pig hunters tracks that won't get you to the water. As a side note, they had just done a baiting set when I was there. Heaps of blue paper envelopes stapled to trees, must've been cyanide as the dead possums were at the bottom of the tree with the bait on it. Heaps of them too, 10+ on my 2 hour walk.

There are a couple of tracks off the ridge that head west that'll take you to the western shore of the peninsula. Destruction gully sort of coastline once you're down there - a low tide walk to the tip would be possible but you'd be cut off and I don't know if there are any decent ledges, but this point appears in the spotx book so I'd imagine there's something there.

There is a whole heap of current that whips around the point, and there were a couple of boats sitting in it. Don't know much about the fishing as I headed in at midday and spend the whole afternoon working out how to get down, got there, fished for 30mins no luck and retreated with dusk setting in. Neat place to explore though.

fished from the point at cornwallis many times, you can walk around the rocks from the wharf fromt about 1.5-2 hours after high with just one boulder to negotiate with a bit of climbing or wet feet, takes about 20 minutes. there's a wicked current running past on the out going and you quite often get plagued with a bit of weed on the incoming. Nice spot to fish but has never really produced much. Have caught many ky there, the odd snapper and gurnard and have had the odd kingy cruise by in the summer.
If you're heading out there at this time of year keep an eye out for seals chilling on the rocks, they can give you a bit of a scare when you're not expecting them and they can occasionally get a bit aggro if you throw small shells at them to get them to move out of your way, won't be doing that again..

The first ledge on the leftside of paratutai gives some good straylining options. The top end of the tide brings swift currents right past your feet. Have had good success burleying 10mtrs upcurrent, casting straight out, good size trevs and ky. Ive never got legal snapper here though. One day. Buying  cheap hooks and bulk 1/4 or 1/2 oz is worthwhile, making it affordable to suss the grounds out before putting out the owners.

the old wharf at whatipu can produce some gurnard this time of year, just biff out a half pillie, bit of bonito or mullet on a single hook ledger rig. Haven't tried it yet this winter so not sure how it's fishing.
