Subject: skip bait leader

What are you guys using in terms of leader on skip bait outfits?

I'm currently using 100 pound mono (about 6-8 metres) as leader but after a couple of bust offs I'm considering going heavier and/or switching to fluoro.

I'm not too concerned about losing casting distance since the fish i've hooked have been right in close.

One thing that deters me from fluro is the possibility of knot slippage (currently using a bob sand tackle knot).

Thoughts?

100lb mono as well but havent had any bust off issues with the leader. Any bustoffs have come from the braid meeting rocks.

Fluro is also really springy. Doesnt sit well on the reel.

65lb suffix braid to 130lb black magic supple joined with PR knot. Works a treat.

Yeah small PR works well. Haven't attempted the FG. Supple trace is the way. MAde the mistake of using fluoro to begin with but does not cast pretty.

Dont think they do a 130 supple in Black magic..(wish they did).Maybe you meant 120? Thats what i use but i also use hooker flourocarbon...Its a blend of flouro/mono so it has qualities of both....160 pound and is thin for its size...can be found on trade me.Sits on the reel well too...used it at the three kings and it went well.used it for stick baits and Jigging.Hooker also does a 100 pound blend too.Can recommend that also.

True, might stick with mono then...but maybe slightly heavier.

Both my bustoffs have been on the leader, pretty close to the hook....so no issues with the braid...yet!

What is your ratio of hook ups to fish landed like?

So far this year I've hooked 4 kings on skip baits, landed 1 with 2 bust offs and a pulled hook.... I'd really like to improve the ratio.

same here for the PR knot tas...found the FG knot more troublesome than the mrsLOL
was told by someone not to do the closing knot like you do on your normal PR...was finding that comes un done from casting....just make the last two half hitches nice and tightWink=sorted.

I recently got a spool of the Varivas mono shock leader - 130lb with same diameter as 100lb Yo Zuri flouro (around 0.98mm). Nice and supple and massive improvements to casting ability and sits nicely on the reel as well.

Actually works out cheaper than BM trace, as 50m of varivas 130 lb = $40 compared to 30m for $30 for the BM...

Forms a nice FG knot also (I'm too mean to buy a PR bobbin).

Oh, and the trace comes with a nice little band of elastic material which I use around the spool of my reel.

You can put in the Venezuelan roll into that finishing knot, helps to lock it, rather than just twirling the twists back to the knot. /\ Google. How did the Top water go in Tauranga and the Three Kings?

That venezualan twist thing sounds interesting! ref the top water i tauranga and three kings....Not very good mate in either...In Tauranga not the best time of year and at the three kings they just didnt want sticks for lunchLOL  You been out on the rocks much? Did you sort that rod out after?Wink.  Arron...yeah that varivas looks handy...saw some at boulders the other day and it felt very supple.

P.s dont have Kids(especially boys)...they are Dirty filthy buggers and stick their fingers in their mouth all the time and then bring all their bugs home from daycare/school and pass it on to mum and dadClapLOLLOL
pps I suppose at least they can carry all your burley when they get older and gut your fishLOL

I put the hook through the piper/sauries skull, then thread it through the body a couple of times. I finish with a couple of half hitches around the nose (although with piper i snap most of the bill off).

As for hooks i've been using 10/0 gammies.

I've been using a longish leader of 6-8 metres

Pilchards I just hook through the eye, caught lots of rat kings from Lottin this way last trip.

Tas ..just found the roll knot you were on about....Yeah i have been doing that on my PR knots for ages but never knew it was called that Wacko....I found that was coming undone from the casting...so i just finish the short PR with two tight half hitches and i cast for ages at the kings and it never came undone.

Personally,I wouldnt thread through the body(unless snooded hooks) as it will ruin the action of the piper.Just up through the skull and break the beak off like you said(or it will spin)....Pays to bend the piper back and forth to flex it up and get rid of the rigor mortis(spelt wrong)...the more flex in the piper the more enticing  its action(make sure its thawed out nice)
You been casting ok with 8 metre leaders?

4-5m leader for me - enough to have a few wraps on the reel when in casting position.

No threading for me either. Single non-offset hook through the skull of a piper (I only use piper) with a small cable tie around the shank of the hook and base of the pipers beak. Break the front part off as others have mentioned. This works very well for me.

All the fish I've hooked have been basically at my feet so distance hasn't been an issue....just trying to add a bit of insurance against braid on rocks.

Where in the hell does a man get frozen piper these days! All the places i visited in westhaven yesterday have NOTHING! Silverbell in Glenfield used to do them but they are gone, anyone know where on the shore I could try? Seems like a gap in the market surely? $10 per 1/2kg. Confused deliveries from up north seem few and far between.

Wont cast as well mate...I do an allbright knot to join leader to mainline(Mono) and it forms a slim knot which casts well and is strong.....Can bee seen on the dvd "Rocking it coromandel style with mavis" with the aussie dood showing you how its doneWink

Up from under the chin and out through the hard part of the skull between the eyes...try to make sure you middle it....but at the end of the day anyway through the head will still work as kings tend to suck it in.Fresh is better if you can catch them....the shiny aspect helps i reckon.
