Perceived advantage's and disadvantages?

 

Alot of comotion about JB hollowcore -- I like knots,but understand you can splice on "new" sections if you get busted...I am not really too worried about this.

Is hollowcore heavy and generally not regarded as a good caster because of the water weight the braid holds and wind resistance?

Anyone got experience with JB solid spectra?? pretty well priced...

 

Variva's is regarded highly but I have heard it is not as durable under shock as others on the market in the same league (this is the Premium Variva's)..Ygk Castman similar properties,Jigman is proven pretty so castman is a strong contender for a respool.

 

Looking at PE8 that is 100lb +

Varivas - I fish the PE 10 SMP and in a heavy line class like that ( 130lb plus ) its amazing stuff... very soft and supple, as I'm sure you've experienced, and casts very well for sure a heavy line.. I've not fished mine THAT much yet, so have not had any durability issues.... Negatives being the price of course... its frighteningly pricey, and whether the braid is worth the price tag it demands, is a personal choice...

 

YGK Ultra Castman - I used YGK Ultra Jigman one my first few reels for jigging, and loved it in the higher lineclasses ( PE 5 and up ) but found the YGK Ultra PE 2 and PE 3 just too damn soft and skinny.... beautiful line to fish with, but a bit too unforgiving in my opion to shock loads when used as a casting line... I've just spooled up a Stella 8000FA spool mounted on a 6000FA body, which is my main medium rig, as I fish it on two different rods, with YGK Ultra Castman PE 5 which performs very well... smooth, supple, strong, casts like a dream... shock load issues to be seen, but I'm mainly fishing with 60 to 100 gram lures on lighter rigs ( OR Stealth STK 76  mainly ) and will also double on a JM GT Monster 86 when I need more distance and slightly heavier lures... may be a little under gunned on the JM, but the JM rods are incredibly forgiving...

 

Jerry Brown Hollowcore - I'm in the process of converting ALL my reels to Jerry Brown ( after I wear out the YGK PE 5 of course! ) as for the price, and what you get, its incredible! I use the 60lb ( 90lb ABS ) and the 80lb ( ABS 110lb plus ) for the most part.... the JB 100lb is actually THINNER than the 80lb for some reason ( something about the carrier ) so would also be a great option if you looking for capacity...

I find very little difference in the casting distance, and the line is nice and limp, suple and casts well... I think the hollowcore effects the casting only marginally, and there are few instances where the difference actually makes a difference.... but you never know.

 

The JB is great value for money, easy to get hold of, and works... its tough as nails too... I find the high end Japanese stuff needs alot more TLC, whereas the JB is alot more forgiving....

Of course the hoolowcore factor and the ability to splice etc is a bonus too.... but I use braid stich loops in Varivas and YGK anyway instead of Bimmini's for loops... and the JB ties a perfect PR as well, if thats what you looking at using...

 

Personally after trying lots of braids, I'm sick of paying massives of extra dollar, for a product that is not massively superior, if at all... I'm sure many will argue against that, and I know alot of guys have waaaay more experience than me with the briads, but for me, and my fishing, the Jerry Brown Hollowcore is a winner.... and thats coming from someone who likes to fish with shiny expensive hard to get sh*t....

 

Done alot of casting off the rocks with it and caught some good fish. No wind knots and no complaints from me.

your summery was very decent and pretty much reflects what I have been hearing, it has got me interested.

I havent used YGK under PE6,but could see how line that thin may not like sudden shock!

I am glad JBH casts well and that is handy to know about the 100lb being thinnner than the 80lb,at the pricing it is I have heard it punches well above its weight and alot of people are moving to it..

Alot of great GT and Tuna fisherman have mixed bags of Jerry and Varavis,maybe this is more American/American resident anglers and Australian GT guides and mad keen fishers aswell,A google search will link you to names and thoughts.

 

I will keep researching,primarily this next spool is for GT fishing,and lock and load shallow water kings on my elephant gun.

Love the Jerry brown i have on my new saltiga, casts well and is a joy to use.

Been using some of the daiwa tournament braid and it working out fine.

Dont forget about whiplash too guys, its cheap thin and really hard to break.

 

 

Is that Hollow or solid Ginga?

Yes we sell JB, but are not exclusive agents for it here in SA, JB will not give exclusivity.... I didn't want my post to come off as a "seller punting his product above others" which is why I didn't make mention of it... But SWS and ChrisW will have stock of it if you wanna check it out...

I would love to be able to fish Varivas on all my set ups, but the cost makes it prohibitive, and as much as I like using the best of the best, the sheer cost of Varivas etc, especially as it would need to be shipped in here to SA, makes it not worth my while, especially with a product as good as Jerry Brown available at a MUCH cheaper cost.... I subscribe to the "you get what you pay for" theory, hence my rather ridiculous collection of high end stickbaits and poppers and rods etc... But in the case of Jerry Brown Hollowcore, its been a win win situation, with a superior product at a much cheaper price.... kinda like finding some guy who has a collection of Gamma's and he's selling them for $20 a piece cause he doesn't know what he's got... :-)

The JB has also been well proven by alot of anglers chasing both big GT's as well as the US east coast Tuna boys, who have been chasing some truly mammoth fish this season....

 

On a 10000SW I reckon JB 60lb would be perfect as it has an ABS of 90lbs, which should be more than enough on the 10000SW...

 

With splicing, if you are wanting to splice leaders directly up your main line, to make life easier, it pays to splice a section of 80LB into your 60lb, and then splice the leader into that as the 80lb is easier to splice than the 60lb....

 

 

There was a huge thread on 360Tuna about 2 years ago started by kilsong when he called into question one of the high-end Japanese casting braids after a popping trip.

He and others started looking closely at some of the US braids with JB hollow being the most favoured.   There is a huge advantage of being able to splice in a top shot.  Guys were even splicing in a heavier braid in the casting section of the line.

Would be good to get multiple stella user's and test down on the jetty by just changing spools.

For Jigging I only use Jigman and Ultra Jigman .
