Hi,
just a question - if I was looking to get into this stick baiting craze - using the Carpenter style lures, (top water/Kingi Killing) BUT should I be looking at sinking or floating stick baits? - There seem to be both out there??  Which works best?  Up around the Northland region/East Coast....

Thanks!

Floating wouldn't bother with sinking unless you want to troll them or go out in rough conditions (floating stickbaits hard to swim in rough conditions).

Floating stickbaits give you splash and a little bubble trail which gets the kings attention.

Floating best, sinking work too but not as good for kings.  Might just be the more exciting visuals with floating.

I beg to differ.... having caught plenty in the 'Upper Northland" area "Myself" on both styles. Some days one will out fish the other but both styles certainly catch there fare share of fish, require different actions. but they do both work as well as each other.

Carpenters float and then go sub surface...So do the alive sticks that i sell..float then go sub surface.River 2 sea rover sticks dont go under at all and then there are sticks that stay down all the time(which marx is refering too)....Then there is the question..is it better to have the rattles in the sticks like some river 2 sea rovers have or rattleless!
The king will get a better look at the stick when its under water a bit=profile, colour etc
with poppers they just chase the ****te out of it!Speed kills. The rover has a great action if you work it right.

I still prefer floating myself, bit more splash and commotion.
But beware floating ones are harder to work and in tough conditions when the fish are fussy and only hitting ones with perfect presentation you may end up just getting follows.
Sinking ones should be in every arsenal in my opinion, some days it will give you the otpion to let it down the water column to where some fish may be holding. they are more forgiving to work as well.

I am a fan of those too, mean value for money and easy to use.  The rover on the other hand annoys me how it gets too active and jumps back and hooks itself on the leader, maybe I am just sweeping too hard.

I have found the rover  works  really well with short stabs...it zig zags back and forth really nice!
As the man from dilma says " Do try it !"LOL
must get me some doggies then.

Pretty well sum's it up! Watching someone who knows how to get the most out of a surface floating stickbait is magic. These things dart underwater, splash and look too good..  Same lure in the hands of someone with less experience or the wrong gear - forget it.

Sinking stickbaits are very versatile, and with a bit more weight and inbuilt action are a good place to start.

Cheers Dave
