I guess it will also distract them away from the SB

Not necersarily but you have to remember the softbait is tapping into the natural aggresion of fish, they might not well be hungry but a lot of times they will still hit it out of annoyance. Like a cat chasing a soft mouse toy sort of thing. Other times you need your softbait to look like prey items because they are hungry but fussy too. Its something you learn as you go....

Well, my way of fishing has the two things differentiated thus:

1.  Anchor (or set yourself up ashore) and burley to bring the targets to you as you fish cutbait or livebait.

Or

2.  Drift yourself to the fish whilst casting softbait.

Whatever, for me one of  the big attractions of softbaiting is not having to bugger about with burley.

Was out 2day with the softees, it was pretty quiet until i started putting a small piece of skipjack on with the softbait and it sure changed things. Also try throwing small scraps of bait out in front of your drift and match your softee to the colour of the scraps.. ie brown softee for chopped up skippee etc.

Old topic, but a tales from a rest experience. Went out a few days ago with the intention it berleying up in the shallows as there was little swell around. Didn’t bring bait, there was an abundance of Kahawai the day before. (Actually, I did bring 1 piece of mackerel which cooked in the ice cream tub during the morning).
Of course, we get out and no sign of KY anywhere. So I thought I’d anchor up anyway, they’ll come to the berley. Just use a slow pitch jig, that will work. An hour later, only undersized snaps on the jigs. Then out of desperation I put the soft bait outfit together and all change. A KY, now on board, big chunks of bait out the back and dinner well sorted. But we staying softbaiting too, and could do no wrong! It was the key to success. We would have been screwed otherwise
