Looking at getting a new game set up for my 20ft Trophy so looking for a good stand up set up. Have seen the DUEL reels that when you wynd backwayrds it's your 2nd gear and wynd forwards is your first gear. I think there awesome but are a lot more expensive than the tiagra's and Penns. Has anyone had much experince with them and do you think it's worth the extra $$$$$$?
Would appreciate the any feed back.

Only used a duel reel once, a 50w with 80lb braid for puka fishing. The ability to chage back and forth between low and high gear so easily was a really nice feature.

I used the same set of Duels of varying sizes a number of times on some good fish and over a number of seasons. Initially it took a while to get used to winding backwards and I didn't see or feel any benefit from it.
I had one particular big stubborn fish and the drag stayed beautiful for hours, so IMO they're up to the task but I wouldn't bypass a Shimano or Penn for one.

The 2-speed system is so much easier to use in a duel than in any otehr reel I reckon. If you have the $$$, and you will need plenty, then yes, by all means, they are a great reel. Their drag system is not ideal however for trying to drop livies to the bottom for kingfish etc, as it never really pops into free-spool perfectly, and you have to strip line off the reel to feed out a jack mack for kings, however, as a trolling reel, mate, they are superb. Whether the extra price overthe Penn/Shims is justifiable, well, that is up to you, but certainly, the 2 speed, forward/backards system on the duel is the smoothest, easiest to use I have yet seen.

Cheers for the info guys. Capt Asparagus it would just mean going for longer with out a new set up while I save more. Very interesting that they don't fully free spool - mite be a pain in the but trying to live bait at the rangitairis with one.

You can adjust the free spool and drag setup very much the same way the old everols were done, by adding or removing the springs in the drag mechanism.
You can also get heavier or lighter springs.
They should have had a much greater acceptance then they did, a shame that all that was wrong with them was the brand.
The two speed system was and still is way ahead of it's time.

I've had a 6/0, 2 speed for 12 years and I've got it loaded with 1200 yards of FINS PRT 80 lb (tests @ 78 lb) and about 100 meters, 37 kg, mono-top-shot. Drag is easily altered by changing internal springs. I also have a spare spool of 24 kg and that can be changed in minutes and because each spool has its own drag plates and springs, no alteration is needed. BTW - set at 12 kg strike (fighting) gives full drag of 23 kg and still gets freespool! Trust me, the reverse wind for low speed is fantastic, especially on longish fights - when your winding arm gets tired, switch to low and engage a different set of muscles-this lets your fast winders recover. Also, when the braid is out, I can forget the pump - just go reverse and wind it in!! If I had the money, I'd have all Duels.

Yep, got kilwell to dickey with the little springs, and it is OK now, but still not a free as a lever drag... but good enough. It just means that if livie-ing with smaller jackmacks, I use a penn, but for a larger fish, or lures, the duel is the one. Seen some folks using the reel as a winch... putting the rod across the transom, and rocking the handle backwards and forwards thru about 90degrees... that line comes in then! :-) Not terribly sporting perhaps, but when a double header of bluenose is kicking up down deep, it just keeps pulling that line in.

Reel Affair, if you are after a 9/0 Duel their is one on trademe with a rod http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Fishing/Big-game/Reels/auction-350103698.htm - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Fishing/Big-game/Reels/auction-350103698.htm
This would be a good buy at this price, if you did not want the Chair Rod I am sure you could sell the rod on trade me and buy a good stand up rod.

Forlongs in Hamilton have a 6/0 & 9/0 going really cheap!!! Brand new, earlyer models-old handle.
I think the 9/0 is around $900 & the 6/0 cheaper.
They only have 1 of each.

If they have a duel for under 900, buy it, buy it QUICK!!! Indeed, buy them both, those prices are way way below wholesale. Just looked on their on-line site, no mention of any duels... think I will give them a call tomorrow actually....

Yeah a reel ahead of its time and technology alright...did they not get banned in some comps in the mid 90's or was that just goss...?

Some of the big gun Ozzies that used to regulary fish the Whangaroa one base came over and played with some and kicked up a hornets nest about how anglers could - in thier opinion - cheat with the wind fwd, wind back method... but that was a while ago now Stu, so I was just curious to see if others had heard of this or porkies.

Dammit... I'll call them 1st thing tuesday.... none of you other buggers go and pip me to the post now, y'hear! :-) If the 6/0 (which is what I have) is less than the $900.... I think I may just get them both. Cachelot, I don't see how using the reel like that could be considered cheating, any more than using a button change two-speed reel. Seems odd to me. I tell you, if Duels could be a similar price to the mainstream goldies, man, I am sure they would quickly outsell the others.

no surprises there seen the same thing with 2 of them on stripies. IMO you'd be mad to buy one over a tiagra...unless they were half the the price.

So was MArty selling some Duel reels or Alutechnos reels (I actually like both, but reckon the duels are just the sweetest 2-speed system there is) I know CD is the distrib. for Alutechnos, but Kilwell do Duels, so wondering why Marty would have Duels?

Mostly fish solo out of 635 billfisher, find the duel reels great for keeping tension on a fish, once you are used to them it is so instinctive to go between low and high ratio, especially when you also having to manoeuvre the boat. Sure their drag is not as smooth as a tiagra, but at the same time they are not that bad.
