Managed to get out the other day. Tried for a decent snapper or two as the swell had finally dropped. No luck there, so went wide and deep. Hoped to find pink mao mao and a handy sized king fish for the smoke house. As soon as I got in the water a small mob of kingfish came over to see what I was all about. I took the best of them and quickly put it back into the boats chilli bin. This time of year there are some big sharks in this area. We had to dive very hard and deep to find the pink mao mao. Not great  numbers but very big fat buggers. My mate is a strong deep diver so he managed four or five. I had two and we were just about to head back to the boat when the boat man signalled shark!. I was pretty close to my mates float and sure enough there was a marco shark with his nose right in close to his fish. Good one, I'll get back ok while the shark destroys his. I got to within a meter of the boat when tug tug...

Here is a picture of the three mao mao the shark got. Tom lost one and I lost my two. Toms was a monster weighing 1.48kg bitten. Man they were fat!

Here is the fat little marco covered in pink mao mao shortly after his feeding frenzy....

Shot back in shallow for the rest of the day and just worked the weedlines for snapper and crays or whatever we could find. No big crays but these little potties are easy to handle and taste just fine with a cold white wine or beer.

With so much bait fish working the weedlines it was only a matter of time before I scored the      FISH of the DAY

I was pretty happy to come across a big school of tarakihi on the weed edge as well as I donot normally see them here. There were heaps just comming in off the sand so just nabbed these four and moved on.

Here is a picture of the kingfish. There were plenty of much bigger ones seen during the rest of the day but this one is all we needed. I love a good smoked kingfish.

Awesome effort 'toonz! Good story and photos. That tarakihi on the end looks like a good'un.
Noticed you said 'beer' and not Tui this time. Peer pressure is a terrible thing.
