Hi Guys
My son is thinking of purchasing one of these (combined xmas $$) for jigging and puka and maybe a bit of big Snappa. He stripped the main gear off the shaft on his TLD15 trying, without success , to stop some rather large models.
Do you think He'll use the 2 speed option? The single speed is a lot cheaper.
Will this be ok or should he be looking at something elss?
Anybody got a cheaper than new one?

hi doug, one of my mates in the bop jigs with a tyrnos 30 2 speed, a nice reel but frikin heavy to jig with, he lasts about 2 - 3 drops and then needs a rest while we keep fishing. he is a strong 100kg farmer guy too but it looks such hard work compared to other gear. i like the shimano tyrnos reels for light game fishing, trolling, livebaiting etc but i personally would not choose it for jigging due its size, balance and weight. many others on here know a lot more than me in terms of other reel options/costs etc so i will leave it to them as i am a bit out of touch with the nz $ fishing gear market. thats my 5 cents worth anyway.

I recently bought a fin nor OFC20L for the same type of fishing you are looking at.
I have it spooled with about 100m or so 50lb mono backing, and 450m of 50lb braid. Only single speed, but also has a clicker, so I will be using this for jigging, trolling, bottom fishing and livebaiting. 35lb drag so has plenty in it.

Hi Doug, tend to agree with above, I have one of those reels and too heavy for jigging, I use it as a 15kg trolling reel, and would happily deep water bait fish or livebait with it, but not a great jigging option. ------------- I always tell the truth about things that never happened |

| Hi Krow if he looking at Shimano gear he could use the new Talica, this would be suitable for Puka, snapper and Kings. But this will come down to $$$. I jigged with Trynos 16 for a while but even this is too big to jig, but does tick other boxes nicely. Tyrnos 30 is a very big real and this is not suited to jigging unless he is a giant. Have got 2 mates that have done alot of jigging with these reels. Only because they couldnt fork out the money for a better jigging reel. They both were able to jig for ages with them and they are good reels. But best not to spend the money on one in the first place and just get a reel thats made to do that. Theres other shimano reels that are made for jigging that are similar price range and they will still do everything a tyrnos will but weigh half as much.
Look at the trinidad reels, they seem pretty good value for money if budget is a big issue. Well worth the extra little bit in the long run!!

All good info so far Thanks. He wont settle for anything but a lever drag. I don't think a little weight is going to be a major issue as we don't go out intending to jig all day. Haven't looked at the Talica. Might have a look. Also remember want it for Puka so need a fair capacity. Don't want to have one bust-off then find not enough line to get to the bottom so I expect a more weighty reel will be required. Looked also at the 20 but price and weight diff is negligible. |

| i use the 30 single speed for groper fishing and thats really it although a live bait out the back would be ok on it ,,its far too big to jig with complete waste of time but for deep bottom fishing found it to be great excellent reel |

If you can afford to go to a talica then you would be much better of with a Jigging Master PE5,6 or 7. Huge power, made for jigging, plenty of line capacity, lever drag, will also serve the other purposes if you want it too. More power than the tyrnos and half the size.
Dont really see the point in the talica reels. Too unbalanced and too high geared to jig with effectivly, and too expensive for a snapper reel, they kind of fall in between alot of specialist markets without really hitting the mark.
Wont regret a JM though, only reason I say the trini is if cost is THE deciding factor

| I use a tynos 20 two speed (loaded with 600 yrds of 80 lb Fins IGFA braid) for puka/bluenose, live baiting for kingis and tried some jigging (too heavy and awkward for jigging for any length of time). If you are just doing kingi and puka fishing i.e. less than 200m depth then a single speed is probably OK, although in saying that I find short stroking a kingi or puka in low gear keeps their heads pointed towards the surface much easier than in the high gear. But if you are fishing deep, we fish right out to 400m and having the "granny" gear is great for cranking it up from that depth, takes longer ut much easier on the body. |

Dollars is as always a large part of the equation. That's why he wants an all round reel and not buying the ideal purpose built reels for the 3 very different types of fishing.
Looks like there are some great reels out there but it's hard to get something that will "do".
Had a PM offer to loan a 30II so well give it a try b4 we buy over xmas. Thanks Dave!

I've got a Tyrnos 30II, I use it as my livebaiting and light trolling reel, I tried using it for jigging once, after two drops I was shot and I'm quite fit. I've also got a Talica 16II and it's a much more versatile reel, ok for jigging in short bursts plus plenty of grunt and line capacity for bottom bouncing for puka, total bloody skull dragging overkill for snapper tho. ------------- I waste most of my money on fishing tackle. Wont be used on Snapper less than double figure(lb) models (we hope). Got the TLD15 & 25 for the babies.
