Well, i thought since there is more and more of us from the Top of the South that its time to start a thread rather than flicking through the CHC one as we do. So lets see if we can maintain one!

So, today went for a splash (after work) at a close but slightly known place to Nelson. Swell map said flat, well i can tell you it was not even close. I would say at best there would have been some rollers at around 1mtr. Myself and Bokken plus a newby went out. Feel sorry for the newby in these sorts of conditions.

Water temp was very warm, so much so i was getting sweat in my eyes. Viz was a hazy 4 to 5 mtrs, not even close to the 10mtrs earlier in the week.

Hard going with the swell and current pumping made it hard work getting even 100 mtrs off shore.

Bokken went down about 30min before we arrive and dropped a burley. So by the time we made it there, heaps and small snapper. The slightly larger ones (maybe legal) were off like a flash. Lots of too small Moki, blue cod and a few goat fish (red mullet).  Swam past a not bad Trev but gun was pointing the wrong way. First one i have seen in these waters.

After about 40min of feeling a little cageyDead, we called it a day. Managed to get 3 butters in the end, so not all hope was lost (very close though) Would have had another but fell for the 'shooting line wrapped around the reel on the gun' trick.
So, water is very warm. Kingfish will be in very soon if not already.

Not the most thrilling outing but better than the alternative.
Mike Thumbs Up

Good on ya for getting it started man, I also went out for a dive today. I had to do a job down tennyson inlet figured there wasn't gonna be much fish life but just needed to get in the water. Water was damn near tropical, saw a couple of tiny kawhai and a heap of spottys but thats about it. All in all pretty sad trip but at least I got wetWink

I propose a nostalgic journey though yesteryear by upoloading a few pics or stories of great dives had. er.... like showing what the area has to offer sort of thing.

me first.

boulder bank last summer, note the absence of knife in holster

first cray successfully extracted from its hole. luckily turned out to be of legal size. port underwood last summer.

boulderbank kingie

a hard drive crash I had means I don't have any older ones to share, so I'll redux yesterdays effort out of hori bay in this thread.

Kaikoura is clearly part of the Marlborough Province so it belongs to us. But we do not really need their kind polluting this thread so kai trips would probably be shared between the threads.

If i dive in Auckland i am still going to Post in here, its all about seeing what people in our region are getting up to, should they be diving in Top of the South or Stewart Island/BOI.

Oh come on Qaz, I didn't realise it was a spelling mistake! Would love to go Kent, but I might have to put myself on the standby list. You will enjoy February up there. I reckon the important thing is to enjoy and make the most of wherever you dive - I get a bit bored diving the same places all the time. North is great for big fish, but if you get the chance to go to Fiordland or Stewart Island, grab it.

Just courier it down. Probably only cost ya $20 and take the weights as carry on!.

Diving around here honestly is ave, whilst we get the kingi's now (which makes it good) it can be barren for other things. You pick up the odd Moki and Butter, cray etc but the best diving in terms of fish life is over Blenheim way.

nope, having a wee break. already 3 dives in the last week, need more brownie points.

seems to be luck of the draw out in the bay in the evening. sometimes that seabreeze can die out but usually just makes for unpleasant diving.

I went for a dive at the top of the chetwoods at the weekend, was amazing conditions the sea was like a lake,we were diving the northern point reef. Shot a couple of nice moki, saw some taraki but all too small, looked for crays but couldn't find any (I'm a newb) got some good size paua and caught some 45cm + blue cod  on a one of those shimano lucus slow jigs.

The sea was still quite angry at Seaview last night with a few breakers up to 1.5m crashing in.   Seaview is not Ward or Kaikoura but I would be surprised if the sea calms and vis improves for this weekend.   Thinking of taking my Kayak out and checking out a few points in the inner sounds. Hoping to fluke a encounter with a Kingie.

Yeah good luck with that..... Been working in both Queen Charlotte and Pelorus at places that usually hold kingis all week and haven't seen any... But loads of big kahawai and mackerel so they cant be far away....

Was working out in Tasman Bay at the spat farm this week and saw two different blue sharks cruising along the surface in 19 degree water.... Very cool to see.... They bolted when we tried to get in and take some  footage with the video tho....

Steady wind was blown at home tonight, so decided in the water would be a bit more comfortable then out for fishing this evening.

Got to my launch site in the Sounds around 6:30pm to nearly ideal fishing conditions, wished I took my rod and baits because I knew the Snapper would have been feeding.   Paddling out I was condfident, anchored my kayak and geared up. Small school of decent size KY greeted me at the first small point, the second point a massive school of KY swam past. Vis was not great but could see 3-4m.  Saw a decent size moki which surprised me. Nice to know they are still about in the Inner sounds.

On the way back four shapes appear out of the murk and I caught a glimpse of yellow tails. As soon as I realise what they were they were gone. Flicked my rubber and gave chase, but no luck. Turned around and swam over the reef again more alert this time. On the way back the shapes appeared again, I turned, aimed at nearest one... probably out of range... fired... fish gone... missed... line become taunt... Kingfish on.  Got pulled around and under a few times, watched the kingie rubbing against rocks trying to free himself. After a few minutes got him into my arms.. Fight won. My first Kingfish. Back to car before 8pm.

Weighed 12kg, gutted and bleed.

dobo - anything from a 110 up is all good. my 110 power through no worries and they are just Omer guns (not as beefy as RA and others)

Now that is cool. Cool

You write it up in such a way as if it was nothing and just another walk in the park. Is this your first kingie ever or just for this summer? I have to get me one when I'm up your way.

First ever. Found the spot a few weeks back and based on the number of baitfish I knew it had Kingfish potential (Plus I heard they were seen in the inner QC sounds earlier in the week). The weather was ideal fishing conditions, so was confident that I would see them.  Undecided wither I want to spear another any time soon.  The fight was fun, first ever fight with a speargun, probably fought it all wrong but with a 13kg fish on 180kg line did not feel the need to be gentle.

I am going to Arapawa Island from the 28th to the 2nd January.  anybody there during that time?  Any tips regarding spots? I am not sure where the bach is, but it is on the coast.  Glad to hear there are Kingis around. I will be taking the diveyak (inflatable) along, so no excuse!
Cheers,
Philip

I guess if they bend your spear everytime I'd think twice about spearing another one in a hurry too. They become expensive fish! Still, must have been a buzz. I saw some in Able Tasman last year, just when I got back into the boat - typical.
