Bush Kid , Mrs Bush Kid , & moi Went out from toots Fri, headed SE , lots of birds but no work ups, got "close" to the Mokes, so decided to go look, wasn't as close as we thought , arrived 1 1/2 hours later, ... did a bit of bottom fishing , JD & KY headed back to toots, saw a huge manta ray 4-5m wing span..water hit 19.7, numerous skippies, 1 ablie. a lot of birds about but no workups ...BIG BIG day 95miles... Sat headed out NE, wind 5-10 knots & rising ...a couple of workups at 60m dolphins & gannets , couldn't see any bait under them , headed out NE the further we got the more windy it got temp started to rise from 18.4 - 18.7 , heaps of skippies, got out to 140m - couple of schools of bait quite deep 70- 80m, too bl**dy windy , pulled the plug about noon & headed back inside Lizzy reef & did a bit of SWF, & soft baiting tucked in behind the lee of a bay , headed home to toots 3pmish wind about 10 -15 & dropping
Came home sat evening ...slept like a baby

Well my trip was cut short with that blinkin NW howling in on saturday, but it was a great trip out working back of the Barrier, Barrier Knolls, Breem Knolls and through the Dragons Lair and back into Tutukaka . Water is looking darn good out there, plenaty of skippies, Manta Rays, Birds working, so its all shaping up. No fishing for me Saturday so came back to Auckland .
Ive just heard that there were 2 Marlin taken out of Tutukaka today and im awaiting further info and confirmation. Any one else heard this ?
may well be back up for next Sunday if the weather plays ball !

Headed out on friday afternoon for a reccy and a Tuna hunt from about 12.30 , headed directly east from Toots in flat calm conditions. Lots of of birds past the knights and looked very encouraging, the water temp got up to 20.5 . Hooked and dropped a few skippies on the bungy around the 150-160m. Then the wind came up and we had major swells so had to pull the pin but did come across a nice bait ball in 140 near the surface, trolled around it for a while but it just got to rough.
Felt Good to dust off the cobwebs. Where did that wind come from ? was meant to be dying out in the arfo.

Got out there today.....gave the kumera patch and trench a good work out.... probably half a dozen other boats up and down the coast....
heaps of skippies on and around the kumera patch.....albies from half way between kumara right through to the trench....
good water reaching 21.0 degrees in the heat of the day BUT no sign of a marlin and did not hear of anybody who saw one
had my 11 year old son with me targeting skippies and alberts on 3kg and he now has a pending junior club record for skippies on 3kg....unfortunately none of the alberts jumped on the light gear....
jigged some nice kings up to 18kg on north reef on the way home so all in all a great day despite the lack of marlin

a workmates uncle flys a spotter plane for sanfords reckons plenty of schools of yellowfin out from tutukaka? second hand info so feel hes talking bout skippies? do the seiners target yellowfin? has anyone seen them scooping up yellowfin? we had a superseiner down at whakatane one year in between white and whale when we were havn a good meatballing season and the day after he showed up ther were basically no more tuna caught so assume they take out everything? or when they remove the skippies the yellowfin and marlin just move on like they did last season till they find a foodsourse they can get into without having the whole lot removaed right in front of them!!!

Mate SuperSeiners clean up everything, albacore, skippy's, yellow fin and what ever else is in the net. Nothing much stands a chance when they have 1.8k of net, spotters from the sky, speed boats to bail up the bait ball. Superseiners can steam at 20+ knots and hold 1400 tonnes of fish if needed

thanks for that pieboy- i think- pretty depressing when i looked at sanfords fleet then talleys an who ever else we let come into our waters the poor tuna dont have much to fear from a couple of zukers being towed behind a trailer boat compared to those vessels of mass destruction!!!

Wife and I headed out yesterday from Tut's at about 9.30am.
We cruised at 25 kts staight out past the Sugarloaf and put the gear in the water at around the 200 meter mark.
Trolled out to the 450 m hole then trolled into the trench.
Came across a heap of Dolphins with a lot of gannetts sitting on the water, nothing happening so carried on.
No wind for most of the day, breeze got up in the afternoon. Best temperature we got was 22.8, but averaged 21.7 most of the day. 1 Albie and 1 small skippie.
Not sure why my pics come up so grainy on here. Can anyone tell me how to remedy this?

Bringing La Vista up from Westhaven to the BoI at the end of last week, we overnighted at Toots on Thursday. Trolled the 100m line up to Cape Brett on Friday (we cruise at trolling speed, so it's dumb not to tow some plastic).
Three albacore (not big, but the one we kept was great eating as entree to the crayfish for Xmas Day lunch) and three skippies (now frozen for baits later). Most off Whangaruru.
With these guys around, bigger predators must be somewhere near, I hope.

Went out the back of the Pinnacles/Knights and south a bit on boxing day for a look. There were heaps of Jesus birds around, the odd patch of mutton birds sitting on the water and small groups of gannets mostly on the move in different directions. Saw a big pod of pilot whales (i think), a freejumper of some description but it was pretty far away, and a shark cruising down a current line, no tuna or bait around but the water looked nice and blue. We were getting between 19 and 21 degrees on the sounder during the day. There was just enough action to stay positive all day without having anything to get excited about. Perfect flat sea too.

Did the trench on da 4th round santas boot - masses of gannets out there with dolphins rounding up stuff in patches - good water colour which went from bluey green to deep blue here and there.. couple of splashes seen in the distance - just got a small mako rnd the 240 on the way in, got quite a few skippies rnd dat area also on way out - I'd be headin north ninepin ways but its only a matter of time b4 they head down there.. top water temp 22.8 in the arvo with .5 deg temp changes in areas

They caught a blue marlin est 180kg got it to the boat in 13-15 mins and smashed it of on the leader after the gaff shot didn't go in, pissed it off and it tried to climb inside their Haines hunter 700.
They also have 3 mahi mahi

We managed to weigh a fish at pihia 114kg and one at toot's 93kg.
But the real story is all the fish we lost!!!
We had 17 strikes in 4 days!! mostly stripeys but 2 were sail fish and a big blue on the trench.
A fantastic 4 days and very happy with the two marlin but hopefully next time the rest stick

Well done James and Levante -you guys definitely made the most of that good water and area yesterday.
We on the other hand spent a bit too much time South in last two days and only got up to Home Point and Brett area in middle of day and missed two hot morning bites. Going to Kumera patch for a quick look yestaday morning before heading up the coast was certainly not our smartest move. Nevermind we got to listen on radio to pack attacks happening to Levante on way up.
Live and learn I suppose.... really helps to get where fish are and spend as much time in area as possible. At least the boat went well and we didn't break anything.

Had an afternoon opportunity yesterday. Took it.
Only heard of three, maybe 4 (?) hookups, two were mine .
It appears the fish may be out wider, the warmer water seemed to be, baitfish were in around 160m north of knights where I was, other than that very quiet visually and on vhf. Nice to hear the reels ratchets howl even if only to get my heart into top gear for a wee while. If I was out there today I'd be going straight out past knights to hit the wamer stuff then turn left or right.

Strong possibility that we will turn left on Friday avo and head up to Tuts and further north for next week instead of going south to Waihau Bay given the lack of action down that way. Who else will be up there from this Friday through to Sunday next week?

Depends which website you believe for your weather lance. According to Swellmap Monday is a bit rough, Sat/Sun not as bad. According to Windfinder and metvuw, Sat is bad. I think we will aim for Tuts on Friday night just in case Sat is the 40knts predicted, but it really is still a bit of a lottery until we check the forecast on Friday morning.

Saw 2 weighed in today at Toots, both stripeys one around 97kg one 65kg. Talked to one guy who had tagged and released a blue. He said it was great out there, other side of Knights good blue water, plenty of hook ups. All these fish from trailer boats not launches.
