yeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaa
got out for an afterwork swim and speared this fellah.i could only see his tail and i thought s$#t its a grouper for a minute.had to guess which way he turned and have a shot cause he was starting to depart....gave  it a texas heart shot,i didnt want to play it cause i didnt know how well id got it,so let it hole up and dived down and pushed the spear thru properly and it was mine. not bad for a wellington shore dive aye!  weighed in at 22 pounds, beats my pb by a fair bit.im fizzing still.Smile

i might do a gyotaku, and just mount the jaw.most of the snapper mounts ive seen look pretty plastic.  liver you say uj, is it good is it?

Posted By: Unclejake
Date Posted: 05 Nov 2010 at 10:01pm
Battered and fried, the snapper liver is possibly the fishiest thing you will ever eat. I can't eat a whole one, but about half of one gets me a little fired up.

Having said that - I have made an error in judgement ordering a liver meal before and my memory seems to be somewhat dodgy. I think Mullins or Crippy could tell this tale better than I Confused

South Coast?  They do catch big snapper in the harbour this time of year.

Some of you may know Bob Rosemergy, a living spearfishing legend. In the late 80's I think, he was gutting a mess of butterfish at the boat ramp past Moa Point, and saw a fish come in and start grabbing the guts. He put his mask on and lay with his head under on the edge of the ramp, slid his loaded gun in, and shot a 10kg snapper!
Another living legend, Dave Mundell, was drifting the Boulder Bank at Kapiti, and had a 6 kg snapper come straight in at him in mid water and bare its teeth at him - he promptly shot it!

I think for people prepared to put the time in, the fish are there. A bit of burley in the right places and who knows? Not as consistent as up north, but still worth a go

^ Yep, my uncle also shot a 22/23 lber in Wellington in the 70's/80's. He's still buzzing about it to this day!

geeze thanks fellahs!   it makes me wonder if we hunted more carefully, like you have to to snoop a snap up north how many others are around.i for one will be putting a bit of effort into targeting them in the future.

Posted By: mjl
Date Posted: 07 Nov 2010 at 9:48am
Dunno case, I think the snaps you guys get down there are more the 'schoolies' out in deep water rather then the resident moochers we're usually after?
A bloke who's name escapes me weighed in a nice 5/6kg number at the North Island Champs year before last so they're there.
It'd be interesting to keep a berley spot going for a few months.

yeah, the west coast is the more likely spot ,that guy in the comp got a standing ovation didnt he?
i talked to some guys who where gutting a butter in the comp the year before that and they had a good snap come up and whip the guts away right in front of them.they didnt have a gun handy!

Posted By: Snoop
Date Posted: 07 Nov 2010 at 3:13pm
Matt, they are definitely there this time of year, particularly on the West Coast up to Kapiti.  Perhaps Butterfish Guts the new burley of choice on the fashion stakes.  Problem up north is butterfish = bronzie dinner bell....

yeah, thats what i thought too.interesting, its got an extra set of lateral bones growing(little short ones)he reconed he'd never seen that before.also one rib missing on either side ,quite common extra/missing bones ,and some bones getting sort of fatter which is the start of a form of cancer type thing.aalso pretty common.
i wonder if the missing ribs are a marilyn manson type deal LOL

A mate once bought a fish skeleton cast in glass… The glass had quite some big bubbles in it and had a lot of imperfections which made it look even better, like a piece of art. May be worth considering.
Regrading the perspex casing, I may be able to help you out. PM me if you're interested.

Yeah glad this got bumped up as I've never seen a bone mount before & its way cool!
I've never considered mounting a fish as it just seems wrong (to me) not to eat it if you killed it, this way you get the best of both worlds

Posted By: AdrianH
Date Posted: 13 Apr 2012 at 12:01am
Looks pretty awesome. What would be involved in doing this at home? or is it not very easy? I've seen the flatmates clean up possum skulls and stuff, and they looked alright. A fish would be a much bigger job though.

Can you just pick off as much flesh as possible and then use worms/maggots to clean up the last of it, then bleach the bones, and lastly fix bones back together (provided you actually know where all of the bones go or don't disrupt them too much).

Unfortunately the best method involves removing the flesh with dermestid beetles.  You might be able to take the fillets if you are very careful.
