K lets say on a 7-8 ft rod.. how long is the ideal leader length tied to your Braid?

I use to tie 3m+. But seems too long and abrupts casting distance. Shorter than that I have to put some finger protection from braid and not much protection on shallow reef areas close to rocks.

saw a vid of japs guy hitting GT's on the brix on the islands. If I observed it correctly, the leader was really short  less than a meter?

2 turns on the reel with the popper hung at cast length. seems to be how most are doing it anyway. haven't found anything better so I have joined the masses..  small PR knot and then smoothed over with UV Knot Sense. 80lb leader and have now gone away from fluro for popper/stick bait on advise from a few on here. makes a huge difference as is softer and casts a lot better

2 turns on the reel as well but use a FG knot as it casts far better then a PR, i use 150lb leader but not fluro as it is to hard for the knot to get a good bite

Same deal for me re length but using a  knot I found on youtube a few years back called Tony Pena knot but am sure it goes by other names. Very good knot. No issues to date.

Also not using fluro, good old mono leader is sweet by me

Sweet looking reel.... ya gonna load it up with 50 pound...
I'm into jigging and haven't got into popping but would like to give it a whirl but dont really wanna spend the bucks up front.. got a new baitrunner 8000D to use which are sposed to be braid friendly and I can use it for straylining out the back of my boat or use my 10 footer with it off the beach... like to cover my bases Big smile

Its' based around your rod length mate. set it up on the rod at a normal hang and then make your leader up..... I guess 3 meters on a 7 ft rod would be adequate.

Yep agree with the others on having a couple of turns on the reel.
Use both the PR and the FG knot and i am still trying to figure out which one is best, have been giving them both a workout recently so will let you know results. The FG definetely casts better than the PR

Looks sweet Ariel. I've found some quite soft thin fluoro in 80lb and seems to cast sweet, finding it hard to give up my fluoro addiction, especially over fairly shallow foul.
Got a stickbait for you to try bro, it's too heavy for my rod. Did you end up getting that Van Stahl?

I use roughly a rod and a half plus a wrap or two, and vary how the popper hangs depending on how I want to cast. Also using black magic supple.

I use the slim beauty knot which is basically identical (if not the same knot) as the Tony Pena that JK mentioned.

Link to what? the knot? I saw JK's post yesterday and youtube'd it, and saw it was the same as the slim beauty I had previously been using. (Unless I am mistaken)

Start longer with a few wraps on your spool and trim as you see fit after a few casts- the actual length will vary depending on how much drop you give the lure, some use very little i.e 30cm some use up to 1.5 m.

Put a fair bit of acid on a of FG yesterday popping and jigging,I really cant see me going past this knot...I have been jigging with it for months had no issues, period - I moved from being a one eyed wind on user to a one eyed FG user - go figure.

It's called independent learning MikeWink ask your other half, she may be able to interpret. No need to strike when secondary do that for us and we get pay parity, don't get us started about national standards thou.

found some clips on utube about FG's, looks like u need a good set of teeth to do it LOL.

I find on the PR, if you dont burn the tag end of the leader, short tight bobbin turns and half hitches is sweet for casting.

Try and tie one, you dont need your teeth to tie a great knot.

A variation on the FG is the 'Sebel Knot', I use a combo of the two. The 'Sebel' way makes the 1st  part of a 'FG'  easy by lapping the braid from a rod tip rather than your fingers, then finish it off with the standed 1/2 hitches .

I use stickbaits and poppers from land so I need to cast longe distances then on a boat.so I have my leader about 1.3m-1.6m joind to 80lb whiplash with a FG knot.Works a treat.JUST WHERE GLOVES

if your knots done right it goes through the guides well anyway. always useful to have a proper popping rod though that has bigger guides to maximize our distance. wraps onto the reel
