The Penguin and i took off at 4.00 am this morning and arrived in the dark at the carpark loaded up with a day pack and one torch we set out for the top of the falls .All the info people had given us was it was 1 hr to 1hr 10 nims to the top .BULLSHIP !!!!!!! ! and a half hours later ,lighter by about 1 kg of pure sweat and having proved that our lungs were in top working order we got to the top I will let the pictures I took on the way down speak for themselves  Top of the falls   Looking out towards MataMata ,think we can see your farm Stu     Lots and lots of stairs and bridges    Beautiful bush scenery a photographers dream   For anyone with a young family I highly recommend the effort to get to the top ,the kids will love it there are some great spots at the top when it gets a bit drier for a spot of lunch and some good swimming holes As for the hunting I will let Tim tell you why we should have had a nice big hind but didn't get it ,the tops are mostly flat walking with great grassey clearings lots of sign .Meet a couple of young guns from Morrinsville who go up there regularly who saw another one but missed it .They gave us a lot of info that seems to confirm that there is big populations of Red deer up there all the way from Wahi to Tauranga .Also as was explained by Predator previously the best way in is from the other side ,in from Katikati to the bulldozer blade (no longer there) then in from there .Instead of a 90 min uphill climb its more like 20 mins till you get up on the tops (plans are already afoot for an expedition from that side in the next few weeks ) I tend to agree with the young guys that a GPS is essential up there ,the tracks are well marked and easy to follow but if you were to venture off them ,everything looks the same and there are lots of small streams and creeks that look very similar and it would be easy to get bushed very quickly.The walking is easy even when you go off track so this is definitely a place i will be going back to.Just wont be putting my tired old 53 yr old body up that falls track to get there .My calves ache from the uphill climb and my thighs ache from the downhill jarring .God I hate getting old ------------- I step out my door to paradise on earth |

Forgot to say that Tim and I saw plenty of sign up there and on the way back I'm fairly sure from the fresh prints I was pushing a nice size deer in front of me for about 100 yrds on the same track we came in on so they are not shy ,in fact we were told it seems that because of the lots of trampers that go up there the deer do not seem to be wary of humans ------------- I step out my door to paradise on earth |

No Kezza, no sign whatsoever of pigs ,no **** no prints no rooting no wallows that I could find ,and like you i thought it would be perfect pig territory .Asked the young guns about it and they say that DOC does not want them in there so send in professional cullers to rid the area of them ? Also wondered why if there are REds in there and it's the same range that runs the lenght of the Coro peninsula why we have no deer up around Whiti .Seems DOC do not want them north of the Karangahake Gorge so as soon as there are any reports the cullers go in and eradicate them? Dont know how acurate this info is and dont really understand how they can let /want pigs on the peninsula but not in the Kaimais and not want /let deer on the penninsula .Sorry but does not compute ------------- I step out my door to paradise on earth |

I hope there is a next time Kezza, coz I am not going to live down the fact that I didnt take the shot on a sitter at less than 30 meters. Timbo, you coulda had some nice fresh venison! You should have given me a shout, I could have given you some asparagus, maybe even a coupla nice pork roasts, had I known you were in the area today....I was just messing about in the house all day anyhow. ......but you wouldn't really shoot bambis mother would you???? |

No matter what we tried ,we couldn't open up and play with them tugboat so in the end we bought one put the area we required in my scanner and copied and laminated it so it was day pack size Mmmmmmmmm Asparagus ,we tossed up whether or not to call you Stu think we decided you would be way to busy harvesting for us to bother you ------------- I step out my door to paradise on earth |

Didn't do aspers yesterday anyhow, good pick today though, anotehr tomorrow, then tues off I think. Yummy stuff too, nailing about 3/4s a kilo of the stuff for dinner every night myself, yumyumyum! :-) |

It's to do with the mineral content of the soils. South of 29 has pigs but no deer either, until you get to the back of the Te Puke area where the Fallow and reds start up again. Cobalt, selenium is in very short supply in some areas, pigs scavenge meat so don't mind the outer areas but for some reason don't tend to hang out on the central section as much. Don't as me why, but they have been seen travelling through there.
Kiwi and native frogs also been seen there, don't tell Doc... Not easy to get bushed if you know what you're about. I've done a bit of time in there and it's almost hard to miss your target location by more than a few metres... I don't cart GPS cause the bloody things don't work very well with the tree cover and it's easy to end up walking in circles. Take compass and a section of the map, but no GPS.
If you get stuck, stumble around til you find a logging tramway running due east-west. Follow that till you find a marked tramping route. Dead easy!
