Put your thumbs into one of the gill / waterjet flap on the side of the octi and then push the head inwards and through the gill flap - essentially turning it inside out (through the gill flap).

Works for me on the odd occaision I have decided to pick an octi up while out spearfishing.

He's a great guy!  Seen some of his videos before.

Never had the opportunity to kill an octopus (imagine it would turn into a disaster), but will chuck in my 2c anyway.  Hopefully will get one someday when you squid jigging and make some takoyaki.  I saw a comedian in Japan catch one and try to bite it to death, nearly suffocated him.  The okinawan hunter he was with had to rip it off his head.  Had sucker marks on his face and neck.  Think if you want to do the biting technique don't hold back or hesitate!

Another option is to shake them to death (in the water I think) I believe.  They still try to grab on and climb up your arms.

It'll be good to get some tips on here from people with experience.

if you intend to keep it, grip the head and turn it inside out. or, whack it.

Thanks for that Phantom I've never had any luck 'turning them inside out'.
Just a word of warning - occys DO bite, my sone Arron got bit once by a little occy he found in a cockle shell. The thing was tiny but he needed medical treatment for the bite...

Worst thing is when a large one gets close and reaches out and pull your mask off, its a hell job to get it back.
on the odd occasion i have hooked one or pulled a craypot in and found an occy and empty shells  i just cut the head off above the tentacles.Awesome bait used fresh,if ya catch a small one just keep it whole and cut slashes in the head and hook it and throw it over, big snapper love em.
Yea they can give a nasty bite, those beaks are not there purely for decoration.

-------------
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito in your tent.
