I'm no stick baiter but not sure I'd wanna throw something that expensive around on the bricks going on how many poppers I've lost over the years on the rocks!

well,i suppose i am old school and have always used cotten cordells....both sinking and floating....they cast well, have rattle in em and have always used my 6500 and my pink panther(like a rocky 2)...they always go well at the barrier for some reason...so its good enough....use soft baits too with a good wiggle !!!The newer 6500B got a better drag than my original baitrunner and will do ok for the average king swimming around the bricks.P.s in the old days...cotten cordels were considered expensive around 30 odd bucks but when you compare to stick baits prices...they really arnt too bad now are they cheap on here http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Cotton_Cordell_Pencil_Popper/descpage-CPP.html?large=CBL - http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Cotton_Cordell_Pencil_Popper/descpage-CPP.html?large=CBL Of cause....rapalas are an option and x raps have a great action and can be casted(they have rattles too)

I do a fair bit green guy and with a similar spec'd setup to what you mention.
Currently using a custom built rod (killacustoms) on a kilwell blank. Its 8ft2 and PE5 rated. Reelwise, just a cheapy saragosa 8000 spooled with PE5 xzoga braid. Saragosas arent supposed to be the best for jigging (or so I've been told by the pros) but seem to handle the jandle ok for popping. I like this setup, well balanced and can cast even the lighter poppers and baits pretty well. Also use it for skip baits like piper etc.
Only have about 15 poppers - variety really of rapala skitter pops, xraps, river2seas, plus a few nonames etc which still seem to work pretty well.
Those daiwa monstermesh 8ft or so rods seem to be alright eh? Prob good value for the $.

I have a 15-24 kg kilwell jelly tip jig/spin which i got fuji alconites on....7 foot 3 ....might use that to popper off the rocks but reckon it would be best suited to the boat....nice action.Shorter grip suits the boat better i reckon. where did you get your pioneer GT popper rod from? Steth should be picking up those vids this weekend by the way...cheers Jon

That website above http://www.fishingmag.co.nz/biggame-kingfish-poppers.htm
is good for making poppers. I made 3 poppers from that recipe - cost about $6 each. I haven't used them yet. I intend to make some stick baits too. Beats paying over $30 each for them.

I use 100 - 135 gr poppers, will just depend on your rod and what it likes really. I like tail heavy poppers and stick baits, gillies stickbait ok and nothing beats the burkley killer popper for casting

I'd just use the same gear you use on a boat and whatever weight lures match that set. You dont need to cast stupid far as most of the time thats not going to be where the fish are. I didnt do much time on the rocks this year but cast an Action Imports sticky around a fair bit when I did and as per BA, some poppers as teasers as well. That said, the only one I got off the surface was from a skipped piper on popping gear. Bait still works too.

I use a Shimano T Curve 10 - 15kg rod with a Saltiga Blast reel. A pretty good set up off the rocks. Slightly softer action than some popper rods but it suits me. I stick to rear weighted poppers about 80 - 120grams.
Most of my rock fishing has been when I go to Aussie to visit my son. The gear and poppers get a good work out then.

mate we were in waiheke earlier this year on a brick mission and in the afternoon when my mates livebait got eaten without a hookup, i started casting a green rapala 5" (+ 2x treble hooks) from my 10ft beastmaster 10-15kg. Was using about 2m 60lb mono leader attached with a big swivel on 20lb braid mainline.
Casting about 50-60m and then retrieving as fast as my little spinning reel could manage, we were pulling up 60-65cm horse kahawai nonstop must have got more around 6 of them before my arms got tired!! one time when I was pulling in a kahahwai a king came up behind it to check it out what all the splashing was about!!!... unfortunately he didn't eat up the kahawai...
seems like the 2x treble hook had a real good hookup rate - pretty much every strike was a hookup through around the head/mouth area of the fish.
in the end the rapala got pretty munted by falling on the rocks from handling the fish and also casting but it was worth it for the action!

They swim just under the surface. The bib certainly accommodates the slash bait action. 2.4m will be the deepest it will get down too but I can generally see the lure just under the surface when retrieving. I certainly had great success using these over the years.

Just spooled up a VS80a with 50lb braid and finished with a 100lb tough trace. Casting with my 8ft 2 Rocky ltd which has new fuji guides. Hope it will be ok for this style of fishing. Keen to try throwing some of these piper style poppers.

Keen to hear how the V80 goes after you wet a line/hook a biggun, I plan to upgrade from the vs55a to that for poppering when budget allows.
One thing I have noticed on the vs55 is it takes a lot of turns of the drag knob to increase(or decrease) the drag substantially - I find this harder to set 'drag by feel' than on other reels.

Super smooth drag on this reel mate and lots of it..guess the test will be when it get hot. Fish City had a 80a for $299.00 1 left i think.
Notice that you can get a high speed version 55 and 65 overseas 5:8:1 would be a nice reel for this kinda stuff.

p.s i use 80 pound supple wind on(two lengths of the rod)and find it casts a lot better....you could even go 60 pound supple if you were inclined. You can then use as is or add a swivell and a 100 pound floro trace of about a metre to metre and a half. I like thet blue popper above..where did you get that bro? p.s make sure you tie your knots well and tight...that supple stuff is a bit slippy Crush the barbs if you want the option of release. You will still catch them.

Yeah it's not actually stainless single strand wire, more a multistrand stainless like that shark trace stuff you can buy, I think. Agree, a bit weird how it's soo long, isn't really gonna help the action of a turned wood popper. Good looking piper like thou. He had them at hunt and fish expo up here and had some nice photos of decent kings, so no doubt work. Guess anything on it's day does. That's fishing.

These work really well. only available from a few places around NZ. Top Catch Whangarei being one of them. yes the wire is different but doesn't effect the action at all. never had one fail me yet. it is a single strand stainless wire not a multi strand, they are painted over so use a coin to scrap the paint and have a nose. they are wire through wood turned none weighted. have caught allot of fish on these. Mr Kojak will also vouch there worth.

Yeah sorry Mike, I wasn't meaning to slam them at all. I actually copied them when I first starting making poppers. And, yes they do work. It's just now that I have some flashy looking poppers and getting into this stickbaiting, I don't think I'll be reaching for them in the bottom of the tackle sack.
Then again, I do know some guys who work out at the refinery who used to catch kings out there with a handline, ball sinker and a bit of white rag, no bull, I've seen the pics. Anything or anyone can pull when they are hot for it.
