Hey guys, I'm on a bit of a bender re; security following yet another friend having the boat and gear stolen. What do you all use for security. Do any of you mark you're boat in a special way. Have you spent large on locks.
I'm asking as I don't want to go overboad yet my insurance company recently sent me an update and all they want is more money.
Help.
Ross

I use a SAS wheel clamp and a lock on the handle of the coupling as well as sandblasting my name and number on the boat as well. Had my last boat stolen and dont want this one to go south as well. After the ins comp wouldnt insure me in the same area I had to change companys.

I have had a 16 ft glass boat stolen with the wheel locked and a locked coupling connection over 2 years ago. Even with all the numbers and distinctive marking and fittings, it has not been found. It was one of only about 100 around at the stage it was stolen. Not a pleasant feeling when you get up in the morning and find your pride and joy gone. Also, you cannot report it as 111 doesn't take calls on stolen boats or vehicles. You have to go in and make a report (in my case at Central Auckland or the local police station when it opens around 09h00 where we are). It just means that if it is still being towed around when you notice it missing, no copper will be on the look-out for it.
I have a wheel clamp and a coupling lock on my current one but I now know it is only a deterrent and, if they want it, they will take it.
I also know of someone who had a sensor alarm fitted but they have removed it because of the attraction of cats to the boat.

GT Products do a realing good product. Its a very heavy locking system that bolts onto your draw bar. All of the bolts are hidden inside the locking system making it almost impossible to cut off. You wind up your jocky wheel to a point where the coupling is to high to go on a tow ball. Then you put the leg of the lock down and lock it in position.
Its a very simple system and one of only a few acceptable to the insurance companies.

Hi Ross,
I had a multi-roller trailer (Brand new) hacksawed off my car at the Takapuna boat ramp in broad daylight and on a busy Friday. My increased security arrangements include;
Lock pin on the coupling / Special outboard anti- theft nuts / a homemade wheel clamp that puts the SAS to shame...U need a gas axe to get this one off!!! and my 18 footer is locked in an alarmed garage!! Not much else U can do really.
Cheers CeeBee

Hi Ceebee, I would be interested to see how you do the wheel clamp thingy. I haven't got a lock up garage anymore at the new place so the boat sleeps outside. I can get my welder buddy to weld me one of those if I can show him the design.....

Hi Stephen,
The buggers hacksawed the 10mm link chain off the huge padlock I had locked to the drawbar in broad daylight on a busy week day at Taka. :(

Thanks Kerren for posting the pic. Very innovative design. Should be easy for my welder buddy to do one up.

This is one think that realy gets me wild, no respect for anything, not even there mothers graves, I'm lucky I have never had a boat go missing but I have had my good rods and reels taken, I just can't believe someone needed them more than I did, to have yout trailer good missing in the day time at takapuna beach? makes me wounder what the f~!k is happening. it's a question you have to ask your self when you see someone, maybe the owner or the thief working on his trailer in the middle of the day. Next time I see this happening I'll look alittle closer.

on the police web site their are photos of boats that have been reported as "missing"
After I had a boat stolen, I use to dream of finding it on the water with divers below so that I could (and would) just tow it away. I had spent a lot of$$ on setting it up for diveing.

Im not confident enough to give you stick yet Crusader but beware if we win. I think that I will say the Mighty Blues as I admit to wearing a patch....but I will keep quite for another few days...just beware...
I may become a lurker for a while or maybe a nme change if we loose.
Kerren can you disable the cantabs if the Blues loose?

Another good way of protecting your boat and trailer is to take a wheel off and store it somewhere separately. Not many dumb arse boat thieves are going to be carrying around a spare wheel with a matching stud pattern.

Yeah I had my boat stolen too! Made me feel sick and angry. Locked up in the garage and basically used a axe to break down the garage from the back. Did end up finding my buccaneer up north near Whangarei on a farm but completely stripped and not worth buying back. Names scratched off, oil at over the place. You can only do so much. What are the best products out their at the moment? Towjam?

I found the police database of stolen boats when I was in the market to buy a boat. Everytime I Googled a brand of boat that I liked, there would be one on the police database. Can't believe how many stolen boats are still missing!!!

Hi all,
I work in the security industry (not alarms though) and will happily look at a few propertys around auckland if people would like some advice. I'm not looking to make a sale as I receive no commision, but what I can recomend is what is called the three D's. Deter, Delay and Deny. In the first place make it hard, ie a bollard or two in front of your boat, wheel clamps, shackle lock, maybe a chain from the trailer chasis into a block in the ground. Then slow them down so more chance of the neighbours hearing e.t.c and lasty deny them your pride and joy. What I tell customers (and I try to be honest) is that if the pro's really want it nothing will stop them. By natue they are lazy bas....s and will look elsewhere....one more point be vigilant allways use your locks not just sometimes, not easy where your tired from a days fishing....

I have never bothered with security with out boat, our van stays in front of the boat full time, perhaps I should, so where the heck do they all go? a boat surley is hard to flick if stolen, also is it not about time the government registered boats and vinned them?

Nope why would that help it dosent with cars so why would it work with boats?
all that would do is cost us (boat owners) more $$$$

I got wheel clamp, coupling lock and this cable alarm through one wheel and around trailer. At least if I'm home (or the neighbours are) then we'll hear when they cut through it. http://www.lockalarm.com/lockalarmmaxi.html

One of my mates had one of those locks on when his boat was nicked never to be seen again. Not a sound was heard from at 5 metres from his window at night.
They wound tape over the alarm bit, stuck a large plastic jar over it and filled it up with instant foam and then cut the padlock. He found it the next morning on the ground along with his other chain and the towlock. He was not happy.

B'Hell! That's an effort alright. I guess it slowed them down a bit . As been mentioned before you can't be 100% safe.

Coupling lock, SAS lock, second wheel lock and heavy security chained to a concrete post. If they really want it they will take it but it will be a pain for the thieving sods. Insured with Marine direct and $200 excess.
