Wondering what knots the GT and topwater fishing faternity use for their spin sets?

Not really into bimini twists or twisted leaders.

Got a PE3 set I've been using back to back uni, but realise that must have it's limitations.

I use the knot as per the linked vid below. Called a Tony Pena knot here but seen it called other names elsewhere. Find it very easy to tie and pretty dam strong (havent had it bust on me yet anyway). Casts pretty well too if you can tie it tidily enough.

make twisted leaders and use a bimini to catspaw. they are the best leaders IMO for casting and will take a huge amount of abuse

Will have a have a tutu with that knot tonight. Have seen it before and thought might as well use a PR knot for jigging, but I'll have a go and see how it packs and forms up with lighter braid for casting. Dunno about the burn thou, I've seen it chaff and compromise braid.

As above mozz, I'm sure that leader set up is the biz, but I simply don't have the patience or time for biminis and using drills etc. for my knots, but then I'm not chasing Gt's over shallow coral either.

i simply use a pr knot, casts pretty well for me and has stood up to the pressure of a few big kings.
Kenji knoishi uses a FG knot and can cast a mile with it.

All the top water boys in the USA are using Jerry Brown hollow braid and mono/ leader inserts,no knots and 100% tested/rated.

Read this link, some very interesting info(these knots are being tested daily on 200-300 BFT with minimal failures. Great info also on different lines/knots and their breaking strengths

This is Streamline website

The major player in the USA market is Basil Pappas, you can find his website at BHPTackle.com

Lots of video links of "How to" make wind-ons / topshots etc here

we had 2 fc windon leaders pull from bhp but we must have used over 200 in the space of 6 months

mozz, have you used any of the Streamline ones yet?

fc certainly is a lot more "slippery" than normal mono( what weights you using?)

From experience, be careful which knot you chose, knots like the TP, allbright and its variants, if wound on the spool, will take the inserts out of your guides after a short time, if using such knots, make your leader really short, just enough for the drop you like, so the knot isn`t inside the guides, I would look at the FG or PR knots as they seem to be streamlined and used by popper fishermen,

Giving the growing trend for twisted leaders, wind-ons and incredibly complicated and bulky terminals for GT popping, it almost seems old fashioned now, but the FG is a superb knot and fairly easy to tie when you get the hang of it - critical is retaining tension when weaving. After lots of practice I can even tie this not on a very bumpy boat and in near darkness. I use the original Japanese way of tying this knot and have avoided the various "improved FG knot" techniques (just check YouTube to find "improved" variants, and you will; find slightly pompous and mostly American guys telling you how they have improved this knot Wink).

I pop for GT using PE8-10 with a fairly simple set up: braid - FG knot to shock leader 100lb-150 lb depending - leader to bb swivel with a uni knot - swivel to 400lb minimum split ring - split ring to popper. Poppers always rigged with single hooks (curse those bloody trebles).

The Aussie GT enthusiasts especially would say that is too light and simple for monster GTs... I ain't so sure about that, and as with a jigging terminal set up, I like to keep it simple. But hey, I dont pop monster black GTs in New Caledonia Smile (yet).
