Well, finally shelled out some dosh for a popper rod and reel. Picked up a 2 piece 8' van staal popper rod matched up to a fin-nor OF5500 with 460 odd yards of 50lb braid. Being land bound (cant afford a boat at the moment and probably for a bit longer) looking for some spots around coro or up north that dont require a boat to access or someone that needs an additonal crew member for a bit of top water action??? got a few of the 9500, and was looing at another yesterday with one of there 50ld popper rods, guys for $399 you cant go wrong and the rod is a beast but only a 1 piece which is no dramas.

true that mate but I use mine for marlin fishing and this season will be tossing poppers at them.

| The 8500 is really too bulky and cumbersome for poppering, the 6500 is just fine, and holds a ton of braid. The 5500 may be fine as well, haven't played with one of them though. They are a good, rugged, KISS reel from what I can tell. Gonna send a couple more up to the Sollies in a couple of months I think. Oh dear, I can see a looming TAS bill! :-) |

think yours is a tad different, these are the new 50lb jobs with a dull graphit type colour finish, maybe wrong it does happen.

I guess you would be trolling and then start chucking a popper when you spot 1 near the boat or how are you going to approach it?
