I voted yes as I believe that fishing by the moon works, however not all Maori fishing calendars are accurate to the region you fish. The best thing is to make a diary of your fishing trips and relate them to the moon to get your regional bite times/best fishing times. ------------- The solution to any problem - work, money, love, whatever - is to go fishing - the worse the problem the longer the fishing trip should be. Had heaps of good days on the predicted bad days.
Being mainly a weekend warrior anyway Saturday and Sunday are my main fishing days anyho.
Weather is far more important IMO.

Agree with Muppet here. I've had a few real stink days on the rocks when it should be a good day according to the MC
I always take moon positioning and phases in to account to make the most of my fishing but find the weather an overriding factor in most instances. If you can find a lull between fronts coming through or say the calm before a bit of a blow you can get in to some really productive fishing. ------------- LedgeNZ LBG |

Yeah agree with you JK on the moon phases. The Maori calendars very, so not that accurate. It also depends on where you are fishing and what your target species. Blue cod and gurnard don't seem to be affected much by the Moon. The moon seems to affect snapper, although if you fish estuaries, harbours etc the bite times usually relate to the tidal flows. Depth of water also makes a different. Apparently when the moon is closer it affects the Atmospheric pressure, which affects the wind and weather i.e. "calm before a bit of a blow". The atmospheric pressure apparently affects the little bones in fish ears. A guy by the name of Ken Ring has written quite a lot about it and predicts weather reasonably accurately. Don't need to be a genius to predict that Last week was planned as I was simulating a surf roll over to determine whether the new padding to my seat would stay on. Good work, and your right i'm not a genius. Back on topic - my dads a maori and he works on the maori theory of when it's best to go fishing. "When it is raining and when it is not" Seems to eliminate tide, wind, moon, bite times etc ------------- Fishing is not a matter of life or death, it's more serious than that. |
