I have been interested in squid fishing for a few weeks now, so went down to see the boys at there shop in Glenfield on the North shore. I was pretty amazed at all the dedicated squid fishing gear they have in there shop. The have squid rods and reels which are super light weight and lots of squid fishing accessories. I chatted with them and asked what to use and where to go. They hooked me up with a few lures and asked for my cell phone number so they could invite me squid fishing. I arrived home with my new Yama****a lures and about 2 hours latter Brian called me to see if I wanted to go. A few hours later we were off visiting a few wharfs some close by and some a fair distance away. Brian acted like a guide and showed us the in and outs of squid fishing. These guys had all the gears 100s of lures dedicated rods and reels, iki spike especially for squid, wearable tackle boxes you name it they had it. They outfished my mate and I hands down it requires finnesse and skill, however they were very happy when my mate caught one.
This type of fishing is a great fun and I can see why its so popular in other countries. I will be back for more and have just been down to there shop to order a new squid fishing rod and reel.
Thanks to Brian and his mates from Angler NZ for showing my mate and I a good time. We will be back. Heres a few pics of last night. If you want to try it go and see them they are very helpful and extremely passionate about catching squid.

it varie in price and quality from a few hundred up to 2K. The squid kings had little stellas with low capacity spools and superlight rods. I went for a quality rod which cost about 300 and 150 for the reel there is cheaper and also more expensive.....

We squid fish a bit off the yaks down here in the Naki. The ones we catch are a bit different than those are and mean as. We make sure we are fully clothed (long sleeved shirts and gloves) as they draw blood very quickly. Some of them, including tentacle, are 80 or 90cm. Lot of fun to catch. I use a 7/0 hook slid through the eye of a tripple and have a flashing light on the trace. I also put a small piece of KY on the 7/0

------------- The solution to any problem - work, money, love, whatever - is to go fishing - the worse the problem the longer the fishing trip should be.

Squid fishing can be very easy if they are plenty squids around and they all hungry but it can also be difficult when they are not in the good mood.
Most people thinks squid fishing only happened at night that's because the bait fish are attracted by the light so the squid are there to hunt.
In the daytime, squid are hanging around the sea weeds either to breed or prey.
Any lure rod, softbait rod will be ok to start Egi but skill level will not going to be improved. Good rod lenght from 8"0~9"0
Best recommend using PE#0.8~1.0 from YGK or Varivas or Okuma WX8 both Varivas and Okuma got same quality as YGK,because they bought from YGK to put they their own brand. Dont recommend fireline, the coating are too easy to wear out.
Power Pro will be ok to use.
A good squid jig in more important then rod , reel , line and it should be will balanced, not leaking.
Small squid jig can be easy to catch the small squid, but using 3.5~4.5 squid jig are more likely to catch bigger squid.
Fish for the furture, relese the baby.

That's the exciting part of Eging.
A good jig should perform the Z running smooth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=TW&feature=related&hl=zh-TW&v=8BrCjadK04w
Jerk the the in 1 direction, retrive the line a bit not too much otherwise the jig will carry going stright forward.

We caught 16 squids within 1hr, unfortunately the boat drift too fast and we waste too much time drive the boat around and wind start to pick up so we decide to go home.

Had fantastic squid fishing last night with the boys. We caught 28 Squid in about 3 hours and they were a real good size. Was a whole lot a fun they were on the bite. The jig that worked for me the best was a 3.5 pink and the brand was Fukushima, it got snagged and I lost it though, then I used a bluey/purple one which worked good too. There were a lot of baitfish around attaracting the squid. The boys had some special sticker stuff that looked like paua shell and this seemed to improve the catch rate. You cut a little square of it out and stick it on top of the lure. You can see it in the second picture on the lure.
I was using the new Ocean Angler Calamari Stick squid rod and was using the egging technique
It was good night squid everywhere

I think the fact that you have to buy a 2k set up to catch these monster fighting fish has put people off squiding, or wait...edging, eding...what ever it was called.
All year round, but far better during beginning of winter ( I think).

Hello keen
squid fisherman
I am Swiss and tour NZ from November to April, your summertime. At the
moment I am in Turkey and no squids around anywhere. But I see that in NZ you
are really lucky these months.
I am back in
NZ for 6 weeks in November! Sorry, yes, November only. But I would be very glad
to go for squid then if there is still a chance from the shore.
I have a
motorhome and head from Tauranga north to the bay of islands. So I pass
Auckland and it seems it is there where most of the squid are caught. I had no luck at the Mount Manganui last April.
Can you help
me in any way giving me some ideas on where to go for squid. Where ever I asked around Tauranga or later on the South Island during February to March there was hardly anyone who
knew anything about squidfishing. But I just love it.
Kind regards and many thanks
Roland

How to prepare the squid
The worst is to cook them too long. Then they get chewy. The best is: let you invite by a Thai lady in the neigbourhood. I have never had more tasty or more tender squid than in Thailand. And then look over her shoulders!
And well, you need the Thai spices as well: Oyster sauce, mountian sauce, fresh koreander, Ros Dee mix....
... or have dinner with us. I have a Thai lady on board and her squid is really nice. We just have to have fresh cought squid first.
Send me a mail to [email protected] and maybe there is a chance after we are in NZ again after November 4th 2017 to May 1st 2018 somewhere. Unfortunately it is in summer and that is not the best squid season.

That is a spicy squid salad.

Cheers Roland
PS: And the lady does not only prepare the fish in a delicious way. But she is also a very keen and successful fisherlady and very funny too. So she put her bikini on since she promised she would do so if she catches a trout over 10 pound. And she did in Twizel!
