I am looking to replace my baitfeeder fixed spool reel for an overhead type, mainly due to the number of times I fish a week , ( 2-3 off rocks every time) an the desire to try something else

Currently using a very beaten up but well serviced Shimano 6500

Need a casting range of no more than 60 m with whole pily or similar weight bait.  No weight of any sort..... only catch pans if I do.

Currently using Maxim 10 kg with a 5 m 24  kg leader  mainly due to weed and bite off problems.

 My questions are;

Does any one know or better yet have personal experiance of a suitable reel for conditions described

Am  predominatly left handed although not important as ambidextrous have looked a ABU 6500 C4 looks good has anyone used one?

Will probably need to change rod. currently using an Offshore 9'6'' absolutly fantastic but may be a bit stiff for an fixed spool.  Any ideas.

please do not advise listern to the shop,  most do not strayline only as I do.

i got an abu 6500 on a gorilla stick for the boat ,works welll from there ,casts well with little weight but am only using 12 lb line .

i like the rod and reel but thats only my opinion

There is only one option. Penn Mag 525. Stunning little caster. Abus are cheap and nasty.

mate i work at fish city in hamilton and all i do is strayline, off the rocks or off a boat,
firstly you will need a new rod i would reccomend the 7'6" ugly stick it is rated 8-12kg has a nice soft tip for casting but plenty of grunt down in the butt.....
reel wise there is nothing wrong with the abu but i would look into daiwa reels either the sl range of the sl-x range great casting reels (in my opinion the best around) and size wise look at the 30's or 40's (sl 40 or sl-x 40) they hold around 450 metres of 10kg....
hope that helps but dont be afraid to ask you local tackle shops

ps: where do you do most of your fishing ???

I must be cheap and nasty then beacause I love my

Abu 6500 & my Abu 7000

Mind you I also love my Shimano 6500B

theirs a lot of good casting reels on the market today i sell all sorts with my favourites being some of the shimano and daiwa products. i use the sl and grandwave in the daiwa range in sizes 20 and 30 and a shimano torrium 16. they all cast well plus are durable and have good drags which are the three keys to a good reel.

The Abu 7000s are a good reel, but make sure you get the hi speed version so you can get the line in quicker, the low speed is too damn slow by half! Nothing wrong with Daiwas either though.

a torrium 20 or a sl30 would be my picks for 10kg line.

Well gentleman,

 

Thankyou for your answers, I will look at the reels you have offered advice on and see what comes up.

Groper I live on an island in the Gulf ( not waiheke) thats why I fish all the time, mainly to eat, if i ha a few deer left on here I would never leave.

 

Thanks again for eveything guys, well now in the boat and off the the shop...... better come up with a good lie to tell my wife.  Still, still got my knee caps and she is Irish.
