Subject: Thur-hull transducers on trailer boats??

Hi Guys,

It wold be great if i could bet some advice from people in the know or have done it before,About mounting a through hull transducer on a trailer boat...
heres my situation..
In the process of up grading my transducer from a 500watt model(which doesnt cut it in anything over 140meters) ,Sounder/gps is a touch screen Garmin 740s.

Now I have been told the 1000watt models only come as a thru-Hull set up,Now as im not to keen on cutting a hole that big in the bottom also just the fact of having something to knock on the trailer ect.
What other options are out there?..was thinking i could get something made to fit to the transom to house it??

Or does someone know if there is a transom mount 1000watt transducer that someone makes that will plug in??

Thanks!

I am not sure if they work with alloy

You could try using the thru hull transducer and fitting it in a "Wet Box" on the inside of hull. Works really well and you can never damage it.  Emoticons
only downside is if the ducer has a temp sensor built in, it will give inaccurate reading

I think that the cost of a wet box in that hull will be hugely expensive, almost cost prohibitive...

You might be better off, looking at a whole new sounder that comes with a useable transom mount transducer.  The Garmin units are in the same class as the Lowrance, Hummingbird, Eagle etc in that they aren't really designed to do deep work.  You need a Simrad, Furuno or Raymarine to do that sort of work which do come with decent 1Kw transom mount transducer...

Thanks for your input guys...

Busted-So you think even with a 1kw transducer im not going to get any real depth out of it??..im talking 300-400meter good bottom signal i.e for puka dropping, swords ect.

Would be very interested to hear from anybody who is running this set up?

I've got a s/s transome mount for a 1000w airmar ,$50 and it's yours.
I cut a hole in the bottom of my 7.5 tinnie, welded a box over it on the inside and sealer 'ducer in there. It does protrude but it's about 1200 forward of the transom and about 400 from the keel,so sits behind and to the side of the last roller on the trailer.Have had it reading out to 749m on the 585

I dont know how you make your "wet box" for transducers but all the ones i have done the materials are about  $40.00
maybe an hours labour
plus a couple of litres of vegetable oil

the 740...before I fully comit to it,Be better to find out now if im wasting my time?

Yup.  40 bucks of parts, complete alteration of the stress lines in that area if it's not done correctly.  I've seen two now on thin-skin small tinnies that have suffered stress cracking and leakage from the welds around the box.

Putting a tinny on a trailer and bouncing it down the road works the hull skin, stick a non-flexible box with welds in the middle of the hull skin and the skin flexs all the way around the box and the welds work harden and crack.

Putting a box in a tinny that goes on and off a trailer is a bloody dumb idea - it will fail eventually due to the mechanical properties of aluminium.  Unless, the job is done properly and then it will cost a hell of a lot more than $40.  Won't fail though...

Vegetable oil isn't the best to use near aluminium either.  When it ages it becomes acidic and creates acids that eat aluminium.  Or it decays and forms seperation layers and grows bug and stuffs the sounder up.  Pretty much does similar things to diesel that is allowed to get into contact with aluminium actually (have just removed two aluminium tanks off a launch that have had pinholes eaten into them...).  You should be using glycerine or antifreeze solution as the ideal.

Yea - you would never weld one on - that would be silly !!!!!
All I can say is that in 25 years of fitting hundreds of sounders (might have even cracked the thousand mark by now) and GPS systems into boats, I have never had one fail.......

Reckon I haven't hit one of yours yet then.  Man have I seen some shockers lately...Ouch

That's one of the reasons I'm not in favour of a hull penetration of any type anywhere other than right at the stern on trailered boats.  One careless retrieve and oops...
