Subject: rod holders on rocks?

Hi. I'm fairly new to fishing off rocks. I guess it would be best to hold the rod, but maybe a second rod would be worthwhile. Anyone got advice on ways of leaving a rod in a holder on rocks.

on the rocks, you should be able to find little gaps to stick the butt into... but if not, you can get those short rod holders and wedge it in between the rock.. entirely up to you. Thumbs Up

Its quite common for rock fishos to use a rod holder when targeting kings and livebaiting and we do for snaps when using a second rod.

We use a standard decent length sand type and just wedge it securely and on a low angle pointing towards the cast area so there is less friction when a fish strikes.

Some people have there rods pointing skywards but i really dont like this method as it means you get alot more windage on your line as well.

Just be sure you have the drag set enough for the line to be taken or else your rod may well be torpedoed into the water!

I always use rod holders on the rocks. Either the short cheapy nascan ones or the rockys - usually take one of each. Both are great as they are nice and small so slide in to backpacks easy

i just got a short rod holder was about $20 and is alot easier to place in the rocks than the rod, and the gimbal end of my rod fits in nicely. And as photofisher said keep the angle low and watch your drag.

Has anyone ever used the Beachamaster Rod holders (http://www.beachmasterfishing.com.au/) off the rocks, they look great (a bit heavy - about 1.3 kg) and come with a carry strap....

STOLEN IDEA FROM EDITB:  For an overhead reel setup save yourself a ****load and just buy a set of cheap hand clamps from Mitre10... usually get them in the bargain bins for about $5. Attach them to your rod above the hand grip and simply lay the rod down on the rocks using the hand clamp to keep it angled off the rocks. Tie the reel off to a rock with a small rope or string. No rod holder necessary and it can be placed anywhere and face any direction.

I take two of the compact Nacsan rock spikes and a flatter rock spike .  In most places I find a suitable crack for one or the other. Most easily accessible sites have 'permanent rod holders' which normally provide a stable rod location.

Would love to own a rocky rod holder but they are quite expensive for something likely to be left behind.

COMMENT THIEF!! LOLLOL I was just thinking I'd post that but Saul's already done it for me Star
It's my el'cheapo #8wire answer to the landbase buddy I've seen on some aussie sites  The clamp acts a bipod and keeps the reel topside up. The string is attached to a s/s carabiner that attaches to the harness points on the TLD25.

Recon those would be pretty easy to make up like Brenton has done with just clamps. All you really want out there is somewhere to lean the rod up on that is off the rocks and locks up with  a bit of a pull from a fish. If its a kingie your after the reel should almost be in freespool with a livie, if its snapper then its in your hands or in baitfeeder mode. The main thing is to have it secured with a safety rope, as to not loose the whole outfit if something wants to rip it.

If i KNOW the fish are around. i will always hold the rod. ... if its slow going for snapper and a big bait is out.... or if a livie is set i will put into a rod holder.  All you want is for it to be off the rocks so not to cause damage to the outfit.

I use those cheap zinc/alloy ones. They stack up neatly together and are light. They'll corrode a bit if you don't hose them down after each outing. You don't need big booty ones. if your reels are left on clickers or runners. Seen a few fullers use ball sinkers to drop down into the cracks and a safety line and clip to the reel for extra back up.

Rod holders are mandatory on the rocks for me. My gear only goes from my rod wrap, to the holder, to my hands. All my gear stays in tip top shape owing to this. No excuse for abusing your gear on the barnacles. That way you can reason buying flasher gears!

Try these guys, Im not sure if there still available  http://www.sportfishextreme.com/
They are good, but can tend to be a bit unstable if you tighten your drag up trying to hold a larger livey in place, they work well with smaller liveys on a light drag,

As far as bipods go you cant go past those $30 ebay jobs Rockz posted, Heaps cheaper and just as good if not better,(with the adjustable legs) as the ones from OZ,
Ive used a mates ROCKY a few times and found them to be bloody good, sometimes the rod sits a bit to vertical but they are really secure.
cheers

have you guys seen one of these before?

the rod angle adjusts by screwing the ring up and down, and the holder part can swivel around on the rock spike part, made of diecast aluminium, tough plastic and another metal (not certain what type) means it needs a rinse after an outing but that's no big deal, reasonably light (certainly lighter than stainless ones, very adjustable (good for when you don't have many crags to choose from) and only cost like $12.50 from memory, i've got 3 of them....

...now the trickey bit! where to buy? this has to be one of the hardest to find tackle stores going (atleast for the average kiwi) in wairau valley, north shore, there's a road of the side of wairau road called view road, on the southernside of view road around number 75 there's a collection of shops with korean signwriting off the side of the road, one of them is a foodmarket type place called "kim's club" inside on the RH wall there's a booth there called "Kim's fishing club" that's where you should (hopefully, haven't been there for a couple of months now) find the rodholders, aswell as another model or 2 of rock-rodholder and a fine array of korean style landbassed and squid fishing gear (most of which isn't to be found elsewhere) seen some neat stuff there, like a 14' 3 piece spin rod made for chasing kings, rated for 40lb braid with a parabolic action and an aluminium butt section, had a bend on it and surprisingly forgiving on the angler for a 14' rod, could be the go for targeting them off of wharfs, than length would come in handy. Anyways the guy who runs it is a good dude, loves his landbassed fishing that's for sure, the shop hours are like 10:30am-6pm or something like that. it's listed on the yellow pages site too.

Having seen these in action by MJ and a couple of others, I reckon they are an excellent piece of kit. For the price, availability and versatility they are (dare I say it) a better option than the rocky. With the rocky, you really need a crack running more or less parallel to the sea for optimal angle, but with these ones, the rod holding part is articulated, so can point in any direction.

I sold my two rockies to a mate for $50 a piece, but he ended up buying these things of MJ's and uses them ahead of the rockies.

Cheers for the heads up @ Michael Jenkins re the Rock rod holders.

I picked up 8 of the Korean styled rock Rod holders ( they now retail at $12.90) from Kims CLub today, he is a very helpful chap ( took time to explain the finer points of getting good angles on the gear).

I will be getting more soon ( Life time supply while they are available ).

Very Happy with them.
