what is the best way of keeping ducks so meat is in best condition?

as soon as we shot anything it just got put out as a decoy  but when i went breasted em out the next day 2 had gone green and stunk !is it best to put em strait on ice like fish or breast em out on the spot and put the breasts on ice?when the birds are comin in ya dont really want to stop shootin to have a fillet up .how about the "hanging " of ducks do they need to be gutted first and  or chilled?

I would have thought you could just through  whole ducks in the chilli after a session, you'd get a few in a decent chilli with a bit of ice, surely the quicker you get it on ice the better, be easyier to breast out to i reckon, firms up just like fish, small bird will go off quick, as opposed to hanging larger game meats!!

We used to use a big cooler box (esky) with those freezer bricks you used to chuck in the freezer.
Lay them at the bottom of the esky and put newspaper over them.

First up, there is no ice water to soak into the birds which is usually a contaminant for meat, and secondly, the newspaper would soak up the blood. The newspaper would also help keep the coldness in the bottom of the esky. The birds would be in pristine condition when we breasted / plucked them at the end of the day.

Green with envy looking at the pictures and being stuck here in Aussie. Doh!

hang them up out of the sun, breast as soon as possible, and most importantly i recon is to get the breasts in the fridge/freezer or in a chilly as soon as they are dealt with.

Hang them in the shade mate. We breasted the weekends ducks tonight and they were still all good.

As the season goes on and winter sets in its not really an issue, but they are best hung so they dont heat up like they do if you pile them up
