Hi all,

noticed very recently my TLD25 is starting to play up:

1) Drag lever is now very stiff to move forward or back

2) even when on freespool....it seems 'stiff' to pull line out etc.....this is with ratchet off...so much so, no way could a bait fish take line out on its own

sld I be worried its stuffed?  heading to Lottin soon too!

hoping it just needs a good clean up / service etc

its hardly been thro the mill either, with only 1 king hooked...that broke me off very quickly...

cheers

cal

Silly question - the drag adjustment knob isn't wound up too tight is it? That would give you these symptoms.

sounds like you got a sticky drag preset knob. Just needs a bit of oil if thats the case. Always have a drop or two of that shimano gear oil on that knob everytime you clean it.

the most common thing to go on a tld25 is the thrust bearing due to water intrusion, but you'd know about that because it'd feel like a coffee grinder to crank with the on.

first and foremost I'd be checking the pre-set as Tele said, someone may have fiddled with it?? seems to happen to the ones in the shop, I'm forever backing off drags at the end of the day.LOL

Will it be in use on the weekend? if you want I'll take my tools/grease/oil etc into work on friday and we'll crack it open and have a look free of charge, I've serviced my own twice now (once for it's anual and another after some heavy splashing) and done the thrust bearing for a customer's one so am getting familiar with the things.

Hey guys on my tld25 brand new first ive owned, even on the lowest drag setting it requires quite a hard pull to make line come of winds in and out perfectly freespools nicely I was thinking if a kingi grabed it theres a good chance itll pull the rod and reel from the rod holder with this in mind i spiced abit of rope to a biner then clip it to the reel, my drag was set by the guys at hunting and fishing massey I didnt have my rod with me so he just got me to hold to reel which I thought was a lil cowboy but he showed me the scale reading which was around 7kgs. Maybe I shoudl get it rechecked

Sounds like drag knob is too tight to me but if in doubt take it down your local for a service.

Yep Pauly I would get that rechecked. Sounds like not set up correctly at all. Otherwise are you pushing the lever all the way to freespool? ie gone past the last wee click?

very, very unusual for this to happen as a reel failure,
its been mentioned, undo your drag knob, make sure you release the drag leaver 1st, then spin the spool by hand a few times and see if it all releases
and to be fair if it dont spin freely it would pay to maybe replace the drag washers, and have a good look at the sealed bearings cause the internals have been stretched so to speak

one other thing, with whats been described by a few have you ever wondered why guys like my self say to run the lines specified for the drags, if you feel your toes have been stood on its not intentional

not at all blue...it was preset to 6 - 7kgs...which i dont think is excessive for strike

by the way....seems like 'someone' had fiddled with the preset drag....it didnt even cross my mind to check because...why would it have changed?!  d'oh Embarrassed

will still get a service before lottin though.... Smile

Ahhh thought would be something simple eh Cal!

Profisho - you might be pushing the drag to its limit a bit there eh. Reels are better suited to 15kg rather than 24kg but if fishing 24kg just do as BA once said and run drag settings more suited to 15kg line ie 5kg at strike.

very interesting, i can't see a listing for the 25 single speed, but I assume a 30 2 speed's guts will swap with a 25 single's?

I wonder what the frame would bring the final weight figure to? Also If with the metal frame and carbon drag upgrade and that oversized drage plate you'd be able to run 200-250m or so of 37kg and actually make use of it, or weather you'd start to destroy some other part, if not that would be quiet the LB kingi weapon for playing with the big boys on those far off remote ledges.

The internals are completely different for these two reels.

The link that Yeenah posted is well worth a look, not only will it show how to strip down and service the reel it also shows a couple of upgrades. The carbon fibre drag washers that he reccommends will last alot lot longer and are far superior than the standard drags. Also changing the bellveue washer configeration will change the drag curve for the better, adding more smooth drag to the reels capabillities, mine now easily  gets 13kg of drag. Also consider throwing away the standard arm and handle and replacing them with a tynos 30 single speed handle. This is a straight swap and apart from being more comfortable allows you to exert more torque.
I have mine set up with 700 meters of 15 kilo line on a 24 kilo rollered rod for livebaiting marlin, the stiffer rod is due to using about 9-10 kilos of drag across the tip. smooth drag that is!!

I may be wrong here cal, but i have found on my tld25 that if the grease used inside the pre-set knob is very sticky, the pre-set tends to move forwards just a small amount when the lever is pushed up. It dosnt however move back down when you lower it into free spool, this may explain how the drag has mysteriously increased, loosing free spool.
Also I found out the hard way that the 25s are not really designed to run more than about 6kgs at strike. I set it to 8kgs and when I put it to sunset, and the scales reached 10kgs, the reel made a slight cracking noise and the drags locked up big time. I had to use the mole grip pliers to un wind the pre-set knob to reset the drag. Once reset I no longer had free spool full stop. So I took the reel apart and it turns out I had shattered the graphite bracket that the main shaft of the reel sits in, in the outside side plate. Thankfully the good guys at Shimano replaced the graphite body of the reel under warranty.  Therefore lesson learnt 6kgs at strike and if i need 8kgs or more of drag I use sunset.
Im not trying to say this will happen to every 25 out there but it happened to my one so be careful if trying to run big drags on them. The reel has caught 4 good landbased kingies, 3 over 15kgs since then and seems to be running fine. I have also put the tyrnos 30 handle to it making it a much nicer to use. However if I was doing it all again and had enough coin, I  would buy the Tld30 or even the 50 cause they are better suited to 24kg line.
Just my experience with my reel and everyone may not agree.

I would agree straight up Johnny - IMHO those TLD25s are not 24kg reels. Sure you can run 24kg on them but ya wont be able to run the drag to support it for very long. Much better suited to 15kg drag settings and they make a pretty dam good 15kg livebait reel.

Photo - Tld30 should be more than safe i think they are rated to 11kg max at strike and about 15 at sunset

mate i use a tld15 with 24kilo. set the drag to what ya "feel" is right and its on. tld15 has same max drag as a 25 anyway, yet to loose a king to my set up every hooked king has resulted in a landed king to date
