weather was looking calm for tuesday wednesday was hopeing to pull my 13yr  step daughter and her friend out of school to try and get them there first marloons. had some mates out serching on tuesday the ever reliable bluefix team .they found some fish in the avo tagging one and seeing a dozen more . so i asked the girls if they would like to take wednesday off school ahh ok said they.  5am saw boat loaded and couple of sleepy girls leah and meg and our decky for the day tony in the truck .launched boat at opunoni ramp plan too follow bluefix out to fish about 165m off herikeno we crossed the bar and steamed out to 90 meters and looked so good decided to run the gear set starboard side short rigger carbo killa and long corner pacific fruit salad was setting the port side long rigger with joeyee evil and it got smacked in my hand  did not see the fish told the crew and everyone looked up to see the fish come up and inhail the short rigger solid hook up 2minutes into the day only 2 rods to clear leah harnessed up and were off after a good stripe.after a good 45 minute fight with numerus jumps and lots of ya hoos we boated leahs first stripey 110kgs.much back slapping and hugs we thought we should try and catch one of the 4 or 5 marlin feeding around us  for meg so we set the gear this time we got all 5 lures out 30 mins later we are pac attacked with 4 lures taken 3 fish hooked and jumping accross one another abbsalute kaos 2 more fell off and we left with 1 takes about 400m out because  the gear was all out a we way .just get meg to the rod and the 4th one fell off ,did not stop jumping by the way, bugger . we set gear again bluefix hooks a double outside us tags them both another mate joe fergison gets one beside us pulled hooks at the boat on his own good effort. then it goes quiet.girls are tired from all the excitement and go up front for a sleep, witch is good can take britney spears off the stereo and put metallica back on. quiet for 3hrs then the girls emerge put britney back on, and a marlin climbs all over the cabo killa meg is onto her 1st marlin and its a screamershe was hurting after an hour was a hell of a fight  fish got tail wrapped and we sruggled everytime we got it close, in the end it died and headed to the bottom but meg being the strapping lass that she is ,about45kg driipping wet ,wacked the drag up to 18 kg and pumped it up with the help of a bit of boat drift top effort. 94kgs more hugs and yahoos.we call it quits for the day crack some cold ones crank up britney spears and sing all the way back to the weighstation. top day,                                               to very hooked marlin fisher chicks!!!!!!!!!! by the way they had done another whole day marlin fishing without hooking one so feel as tho they had done the hard yards!

So does our Truancy Officer Graeme,Embarrassed... but that is ok I will put in a good word and say it was all for scientific research as it was a marine biology lesson outside the classroom, that will get the tick in the box and the girls "Officially Excused and Pardoned"Big smile

I too remember a few days at high school involving a bout of "crook guts"
..."yeah hi, its mikes dad here...he wont be in for a couple of days, seems to have caught a bug of sorts... (clicker going off on the reel in the back-ground)"

Those were the days alright!LOL

I am keen on having a shot over the Hoki as well. What is the best way to find out whether the bar is suitable to cross with out travelling all the way up from Whangarei to have a look. Last Wednesday I think Swell map was predicting 2.5 m on the west coast but looking at Mainlanders photos this was not the case any info would be well received. Congrats on the fish Mainlander way to go.

Greg you could probably phone the coast guard and check out the conditions if you really wanted.

Or if you want you can go to surf2surf .com and check the surf report check muriwai or piha the night before and then check the spots further south and make sure there is not a fresh souwest swell running up the coast. Just becareful that there isnt a low in the mid tasman about to push a west angle swell in though.

If you can read an isobar map that would probably help too.

Im guessing the  bar would be crossable on a two metre at high water without two much trouble, but then you would probably want a high water in the morning and a high water in the arvo to get out and come in on.

I havent personaly crossed the bar in a solid two metre swell so don't quote me on that one, but have surfed a lot over there and i doubt the bar breaks at high water on a two metre, unless its a neap tide or something.

I was out wednesday and i had swell map reading about 1.5 metres , i would say it was less than that when i was out there thats where u wanna check the surf report.

Any way swell map is pretty accruate but if you want real live data check the surf report. I dont have a large boat with a hard top so have to be reasonably weary of the bar.

hope that helps.

You can always launch at ahipara if your worried about the swell.
