For me....probably more of a game

Games are distinct from /wiki/Manual_labour - work , which is usually carried out for http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/remuneration - remuneration , and from /wiki/Art - art , which is more concerned with the expression of ideas. However, the distinction is not clear-cut, and many games are also considered to be work (such as professional players of spectator sports/games) or art. Key components of games are goals, http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/rule - rules , http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/challenge - challenge , and /wiki/Interaction - interaction . Games generally involve mental or physical stimulation, and often both. Many games help develop practical /wiki/Skills - skills , serve as a form of /wiki/Exercise - exercise , or otherwise perform an /wiki/Education - educational , /wiki/Simulation - simulational or /wiki/Psychology - psychological role.

The U.S Fly fisherman magazine has "the quiet sport" as its by-line.

Addiction or obsession would probably fit better

I think you got it StPaul. Obsession, addiction, fascination, love affair.

So presumably everyone agrees that competition fly fishing is a sport... but whether everyday fly fishing is I am yet to decide. I think it does all depend on your definition of sport.
