In years not so long ago a thread amping up the expectations for the Houhora comp would have started about three weeks ago. Times and people change.

All a bit different this year; Wednesday to Saturday (I think) as opposed to the other way round. First day's fishing is next Wednesday. 8 sleeps or something equally silly.

But as a public service:

Who's doing the Houhora comp this year?

Tagit will have on board the eponymous owner, Boulder, Beagle, BigGear and myself. Fishing in from Whangaroa. Never fished in to a comp before. Sounds rather grand does it not? 'We'll be fishing in from Sierra Leone; port out, starboard home'

As an aside, Dead Ant and I had a very good day weasel training today. Getting the little chap used to Tagit's flybridge, putting him through his paces, splitting a couple of his COM ports to see if liked a bit of data coming at him from all angles, a few mid season beep tests; all the usual stuff. Wink

Eponymous: giving one's name to a tribe, place, etc.: Romulus, the eponymous founder of Rome.

David, is there a specific word for one who always finds the perfect word? Are we now members of the Tagit tribe?

Looking at the long range swell predictions, Ahipara might be the secret alright. For the first day anyway.

Kezza, I wouldn't want to be going to the Kings in a 20 knot SE though.

Obald and Tagit - thanks for sending down one very frazzled looking Deadant who arrived on Tuesday night just in time for chilli fish (gurnard). I took him out yesterday and completed de-stressed him (and will let him report on that).

To say that I am looking forward to Houhora HUGELY would be an understatement of behemothic proportions.

Curried striped marlin.... mmmmmmm.

Hmmm, "tough and crusty virgins" - not sure that I like the sound of that very much!! I normally prefer virgins and 'crusty' to appear in seperate dreams. Think I might sleep on the flybridge yet again.

I need some skirts similar to the top lure in the picture (Dark brown over orange). This colour scheme has attracted more fish to our pattern than most others. A bit squid-like? Even gets hit by skippies, albies, kingies, makos and yft as well as stripys.
Sometimes it doesn't get eaten by a stripy but they spend more time looking at it than any other.   colour scheme! The 2nd lure has been a real winner for several seasons. I think I have got the pics reversed

The Pakula colour is called Gold Yakka, being modified this year to be more like an old colour 'Super Donger' and we are doing the same heads again for next season in the revised Softease Range. So, no need to fear, it will be back. Just had to wait till the Old Softease range was sold out of the stores.

As the off for Houhora is only three days away I thought I had better spend an hour or two in the barn getting things sorted out. A few more new smaller lures, a few more spare skirts, a few more smaller hook rigs, a few double hook rigs (the Boss likes these), reduce the amount of 400lb trace from the Waihau trip and replace with more 300lb, put the diamond file back in the rigging box, take a couple of 50Ws off their rods for boat spares. What a very agreeable way to spend a Saturday evening if you don't want to watch a dead rubber (cricket) and the Midsomer Murder is a repeat.

Oh, and Roy, I have no skirts of any hue whatsoever that have an inside shoulder diameter of 43mm. You trolling for orca or something?

Haha dumb Roy!!I flattened the lure and measure the distance - therefore 43 x 2 / pi = 27.4 mm ish diameter.
Checked lure head with vernier calipers and it's 27.3 mm

Cyclones Thomas and Ului might be worth keeping an eye on.

Wind forecasts for Wednesday have already changed from 5 knot SW to 18 knot SE. South East - everyone's favourite wind.

Still, don't worry about something you can't alter.

Yes, it all seems to rely on Thomas (currently holidaying in the Islands).

Recent history (week before last) tells us that the experts have difficulty predicting the behaviour of such critters. Hopefully it'll mosey on off the ranch and us cowboys can get on with the marlin muster.

We're off - well some of us are.

Boulder and Tagit are on their way to Kawau as I type. Loadsa lures, rods, reels and food (in descending order of importance) are on board but a last minute call from Boulder tells me we are dangerously low on stocks of Lady Grey tea. Another one of many little final touches to be purchased on the morrow.

Tomorrow Landcruisers will leave from all over the North Island to meet the boat in Whangaroa. Beagle driving his from Raglan, BigGear from Tauranga and I get to drive my old cruiser for a day as I have things to do in Whangarei and Kerikeri on the way up.

The Weasel is loaded with all the latest wind and SST information, sunshade about to be made for the slave screen and I think we are just about there.

Not even worried about the weather any more. Bugger all I can do about it and one has a somewhat larger fishing window of opportunity when you are 43 foot and 15 tonnes than you do if you are trailer boat. If it blows its tits off I can always stay in the downstairs bit, read a book and drink Lady Grey. Smile

Bob Ash on Lucky Strike had a nice black take a livey off Doubtless Bay in about 150m on the first day of the comp but didn't get a hookup, wonder if it was the same fish.

We tagged a stripy about 100 kg on the thursday and landed a 102kg stripy on the Saturday. Both fish on live skippy's, the first off Knuckle Point and the other off Ahipara.

The winning stripy came from Ahipara and they had forgotten the harness and gimble so the young fellow had to fight it for an hour or so with no harness or gimble, then another boat gave them one (well done to those guys). Great fish really fat. Incidently the second heaviest stripy (143 kg) was caught by a 12 year old who also tagged 2 stripys.
