Hi all! Does anyone know anything about Lazercraft Boats? I've heard from others that they are a great boat, soft riding and dry? We don't see them here in Taranaki so I'm a bit interested in finding out about them. I'd be keen to hear from anyone with an under 6m boat and their trials and tribulations. Cheers Smile

I like the Lazercrafts. Hull design is similar to the Southern Sportz, and I think they may be under the same ownership now (not certain). Anyway, having had (in our fleets) the SSportz versions in 5.7, 6.7, 7.4, and 7.7 my belief is that the hull shape is too tender for the under 6.0m boats and the quality of ride doesn't make up for the lack of stability unless the latest hull designs are a bit different to the earlier ones. From ~6.5m up I like them a lot.

I have a very early Lazercraft (mid-80's) and the ride is amazing. 17ft (5.something metres). Only the tiniest rev up will put her on the plane and she cuts through any chop. We are very pleased with our purchase and the later Lazercrafts look to have the same V shaped bow. Southern Sports and Lazercraft are now from the same company. The early Lazercraft were made by Ullrich Alluminium, and some had the Azural brandname.

I am the very proud owner of a 6.2 m lazercraft. I chose it because I had been on two 5.6 m models. My old man had one and the Kerikeri dive shop had one (a few years ago now) I would rate them very highly compared with fyrans (6m), and surtees (5.5m) of same age that I had also been on. Very soft riding, they like a bit of weight in the back. I think that the lazercraft was first then some lazercraft guys split off and started southern sports and now it is back together, not sure of this.

thats correct two guys left lazercraft to start southern sports and now southern sports have taken over lazercraft. lazercraft was started by gavin child who was an off shore powerboat racer i understand they are keeping the two brands seperate even though they are made in the same factory. website is southern-lazer must admit ive allways fancied the lazercraft and the southern sporzs allways get very good reviews to

Lazercraft would have to be the only alloy boat i truly drool over i just wish they had a dealer in auckland that would serously market them there are a lot of alloy boat manufacturers who could take a lesson on style from Lazercraft.

"Oursies" is a 6.2m soft top with a 150 Honda VTEC on the back.  It rides well and is quite stable and the VTEC keeps it economical at lower revs, less than 4000. Its a bloody good fishing platform for coastal and further afield, we regularly take it out to the Poor Knights and beyond.  They're pretty easy to clean and maintain and we havn't had any real problems in the four years we've had it.

All boats are a trade off, fine entry deep v boats are tender at rest but cut through the rough with ease, full bowed shallow v boats are  stable at rest but pound when under way. IMHO Lazercraft are a good compromise, they ride very well, under 6 meters are a little tender at rest, untill the reverse chines catch and the tendeness stops! They lose some stoarge space up front by having such a fine entry but compensate for this with a really good standard set up ie side racks that are wide and can hold dive bottles. I imagine that they would eat the conditions that taranaki has to offer,  But then so do AMF

Mate of mines got the 740 GT lazercraft, twin 90 mercs on the back, according to him they are a very good rough water boat and eat it up but he said they are not so good when its calm of all things they tend to roll on there sides causing the side of the hull to suck to the water, he runs trim tabs too but doesnt seem to make any difference
A well setup boat, i quite like them, the fyberglass hardtops a good idea IMHO!!

Yes RC1, I agree the Southern hull design is a good one, but in my dealings with
the person in charge of the build, and owner during and after the build, I found them
very difficult to work with. I am also not happy with some of the finishing on the boat,
and I also had some major issues, which I had to get sorted at my own cost. For that reason,
I would not recommend them to anyone.
