Subject: Canterbury Spearos Thread...
Date Posted: 27 Jan 2010 at 1:54pm
So as per an earlier thread, someone needed to get a thread started for those of us who get to hunt fearsomely large crays and plentiful Butters, cod and moki in visibility that makes my creme of chicken cup-a-soup look crystal clear, so please post away with reports, trip notifications, pics and general ramblings...

Oh and anyone headed out Banks peninsula way this weekend, figuring the southside might be OK with the Noreasters- will give a vis report after my Birdlings Flat check-up this evening.

dived little akaloa today - dirty as hell, large northerly swell rolling on in. saw some seriously large crays sitting in the back of caves, but wasn't game to be venturing in there with my 'buddy' sitting on the boat with an idiot stick. ended up grabbing a medium cray and nailing some fish for tea. Heading to the south side of banks tomorrow, looked good from the summit, so hoping for a good day.

a good day of cray harvesting. had heaps of fish from kaiks the other day so just concentrated on trying to get some big bugs. both of us got 6, and some nice ones amoungst them so that was cool. bit of a southerly swell / chop, made for a rough and wet ride in the tin machine but ok for diving in the sheltered spots. vis a milky 5m.

That's good going R Jack - nicely done.  If you are up for an evening trip out in the next week or two and fancy some company then drop us a line as getting out cray chasing off Banks is something I'm real keen on.  The cat's meow Mr Felix and I are heading off to Kaiks tomorrow for some general slaughter, and if this nor'easter holds it should make for a good trip.

From a combination of Swellmap/ Metservice/ Dive Kaikoura vis report/ general guesswork it looks good for tomorrow but the Southerly coming through Sat night may cock things up a little for Sunday depending on how strong it is.

Yeah I was thinking sunday might be a bit of a gamble.Hopefully the southerly is weak.

Ended up going over to Wainui today, 2-3m of vis (not bad in the harbour). saw a couple of butters. Did mange a feed of paua (was shocked because it was literally a 20 metres from the carpark) anyhow it's not a bad option if there no where else to dive.

Fd3s, Pomahaka, myself and another chap were headed off to Kaiks yesterday morning with Felixx + 1 when Felixx got a puncture and as soon as that was changed him and his mate's coastguard beepers went off so that was their day done.  The hardcore crew carried on regardless though, a little bit dubious on what Kaiks would be like following a full night of strong Nor Easter.

We needn't have worried though - Kaiks was blue sea, warm sun and around a 2 foot ground swell.  Stopped at a bay along the coast before town, and got suited up.  Fd3s was toting his new beauchat gun, and Pomahaka and his mate Anthony - who's a newb to the game - were keen on some paua.

Jumped in (after startling about 100 seals that we hadn't noticed on observing the bay from the road) and it was straight into 4m vis and some lovely fishy territory.  Saw butters from the off, and picked up crays and paua.  After rounding the furthest point of the reef, headed back over some mixed boulder/ sandy ground in about 8m so figured I'd nip down for a look, only to be greeted by Mr Blue Cod and a couple of his mates.  First one I've seen around the S Isalnd, and I was stoked to have a chance at one.  A decent breath up, and I was soon on the bottom.  It was textbook stuff - laid flat, stirred up the sand, kept my head down and when I looked up there was the biggest of the lot eying me up.  A nice easy shot and he was mine.  Sweet!

Headed back to the shallows, met up with the others and after grabbing a few paua we hopped out.

Fd3s with his first butter:

Not for too long though as we all got back in again - it was just too good to resist!  I headed back out to the blue cod spot and found another takeable fish, then foraged for some more crays.  We ended up with 8 crays, limit of paua, and a load of butters, the blue cod and one nice moki.

A good South Island haul:

After a bit of R&R at the pub for beer and carbs, we headed off home to finally get back 13 hours after leaving.  Bit tired last night.

It was great to be out there, and I can feel my breath-hold and general underwater fitness improving from dive to dive.  Still getting leg and foot cramps though - how can I avoid these?  Finally, kudos to Anthony for persistence despite being underweighted, he kept at it for ages after we'd all got out in order to secure his first blackfoot & yellowfoot paua, along with some (not so tasty, as he found out Dead) kina.   Full marks for effort. Clap

Now to get ready to do it all over again next weekend Big smile

teezer that's interesting you saw cod there as well - I found them waaay shallower than I've ever seen them there before, and friendly as hell. I almost felt bad shooting them (almost). I dropped my gun while the guncam was on as one stage and they all cruised up looking into the lens LOL

Nice!  That really was shallow wasn't it, and loads around - brilliant stuff.  When I first saw them I couldn't quite believe it as I've been diving Kaiks for over a year now and never seen hide nor hair of them.

Looking forward to doing them some more damage next weekend Big smile

Yeah - will jump in first light, then back to the tent for brekkie, then check the phone to see who's about and on from there.  Sounds like the top conditions are gonna make it a ChCh to Kaiks spearo migration tomorrow, so early is deffo better I reckon.  Plan on peninsula first off, then back to last week's blue cod spot mid morning as will have some newbs with me and paua were in 2m or so there so plenty for them to get on with.  Will be in blue mazda 3, so where ever it's parked I won't be too far away.  See you up there.

fd3s, cheers for a great day!
For everyone else, here is a quick rundown.
Pomahaka, fd3s, and a couple of others met at my place at 0545 this morning.
A nice drive to Kaikoura followed, then we managed to fid teezer coming back from the seal sanctuary with afew blue cod.
I wont talk about fd3s's mate getting a blowout and having no spare tyre...

He was whinging about the vis, but being a pom he cannot help this. HOWEVER the sea was a bit milky so we went back to a bay between the tunnels.

On the way we saw RJack, Vernon and Ryan suiting up and had a quick chat to them then left them to it.

Between us we got some good feeds of paua, butterfish and pomahaka got some good crays

Thanks for a great day team!

was pretty hard work out there today. vern had smashed his mask within minutes of entering the water, and took off to kaikoura for a replacement. Ryan and I nailed butterfish for a while until the swell got the better of us, then exited for filleting, and later we jumped back in for crays / paua. a productive day, but hard to get excited about the conditions. looked to be better further south.

Went to kaiks for sat/sunday. Seen all you guys at your spot while we were looking for a spot. Looked like you had just got out. We tried up north but south was the better option.
Ended up entering by barneys rock. Vis was crap there but not bad after a short swim around the point.
Seen all those jelly things you're talking about. Look like some sort of fish eggs or something??
Had 4 or 5 seals jumping in and around me. Was a bit worried they might steal my butters.. Anyone ever had that happen??
Had a huge school of small kahawai circle me as well while the seals were there.. Almost like the seals rounded them up.. haha.. Was just waiting something bigger to appear.

We ended up with 7 butterfish and some paua. Seen plenty more but we had enough for a couple of feeds. Only seen small moki. no biggies.
The swell dropped as the day went on so decided to go for a fish on the boat.
Was super calm and thousands of baracoutta everywhere. They were jumping out of the water chasing baitfish. Stayed out till sunset and towed in another boatie whos battery went flat.

Southerly wind picked up this morning so ruined the sea again Unhappy

Went up to Kaiks for the weekend.  Jumped in on my favourite reef as I was passing it Friday evening.  It was choppy but the vis was good enough to secure several butters and some nice moki, along with a cray and some paua.  Looked for blue cod (my new target species) but no joy - not enough sandy areas.  Met up wih a mate at the campsite and ate some fish for tea whilst planning the weekend.

Sat morning, headed out at first light off the seal sanctuary.  Vis was disappointing, and fish life on the weed minimal.  However, this gave me a chance to put the gun sight firmly on the blue cod, and so a few kina went into the catch bag in preparation.  Out over the sand I smashed those boys up and on the next dive there were a good few cod there.  It works!  Nailed the largest, and then got two of his smaller buddies which were legal - but only by a cm or so.  Still - legal's legal!  Well chuffed with that, we headed back for some brekkie.

As Felixx mentions, saw him and the Chch massiv pull up as we wandered to the carpark.  Pointed them back down coast, and after a feed followed them.  The bay we went back to was f*cking rough, with the rising tide making entry and exit 'interesting' however it was deffo the best spot across the area.  I slaughtered a few more butters and got some pauas, but my fish cull was nothing on that of the massiv, who are truly sharpening their spearing skills.  ChCh will be feasting on fish this week!

After a couple of hours, we outed, said our goodbyes and headed off for lunch.  After that, it was time to try out South Bay.  It was flat, but vis was real bad with a ground swell kicking the place up bad.  Still, always up for an opportunity to get wet, I carried on regardless, and good job I did!  After ages of nothing, I came across what I thought was a huge school of moki.  But they don't school that big - usually they are in threes and fours, not 100's.  So I investigated closer and blow me if they didn't look like terakihi, but that just didn't make sense.  8m deep, Kaikoura, turkeys?  Nah.  So I figured spearing one was just the ticket, and here it is:

Warehou maybe?  The slime was real sticky, the flesh and head/ body was soft, the pectorals reached back past the anal vent, the front dorsal was short with small spiney rays.  After death, the scales flaked off real easy, and the skin also marked easily.  Black spot just behind the gill plate. What's the professional opinion?  It was 30cm long.

After that boy, I found a hefty blue cod (can't stay away from them!) and that was in the murk of 10m down with about 3m vis.  Worth giving it a bash anyway.

Finally this avo I headed out with a mate on his jetski.  Now THIS is the wayt to spearfish!  The swell had increased overnight and the coast looked pretty closed out, but 10 mins out on the ski and we were in some clear water.  Jump in on a reef and it looks like an aquarium!  10m vis, butters and wrasse everywhere.  Having buttered myself out I tried for a decent moki but there were loads of small boys and no big ones.  Ah well  - it was worth it all the same.  The trip back ws slow as the swell was still increasing.  Had a last dip at South Bay Reef but that was rough as toast and I was soon out of there and back on dry land.

And then I left my spearguns by the car, forgot about them, and drove off.  If anyone finds / comes across a black freedivers 90 cm gun with yellow writing and a green leash to a silver shark clip, alongside a black freedivers 90 cm gun with silver writing and a white cord leash to a silver shark clip, that were left to the right had side parking area of the private launch ramp in South Bay then please let me know!

A sad end to an otherwise awesome weekend of spearing fun.

Cheers guys.  I suppose they're rare down here as I've never seen them before - any other S. iIlanders care to comment?  A fisheries mate says they get trawled pretty heavily but that's in 20m to 200m.  I'm chuffed with them anyway, and it's Warehou fillets for tea tonight.  To top it all off, my gear has been found and is awaiting collection.  Sweet!

Nice..

I've never seen Warehou whilst in the water. But when I lived in Akaroa I set a net out infront of the fish and chip shop. Ended up with a school of around 20 of them.
So they are about. just maybe not so common whilst spearing.

doesn't look ideal on the long range but you'll probably find a place to jump in- you'll be wanting to try and find somewhere out of the southerly swell... you *might* be in luck on one of the bays close to the seal colony, but the close ones aren't as good for fish / crays. maybe somewhere around goose bay - it isn't normally so bad in a southerly swell. I imagine the north coast will be ****e.

Kaiks was calm and flat, but the vis sucked.  It was 2m, up to about 4 max.  Went to 'the' spot, and anything deeper than 4m or so had a real thick green murk.  I enjoyed getting wet, and a half hearted search saw me score a couple of bugs and 2 butters.  Saw a monster blue cod but of course, the gun was marking a cray hole.  He'll be there for next time.  Was only there for about 1hr - it was really just to get the guns.  Nice trip all the same.

Has anyone speared a Kingfish off the peninsular. Any advice. Kayak club is going to have a crack if and when we get some decent weather.
i have only shot Butters, but if the opportunity presents itself i would love to take a shot.

Morning all you Canty Spearo's.  So who's got the minerals to be giving this a go in a couple of weekends time?  It clashes for me, but I'm sure there's a few on here that will give the competition a run for their money.

There is also another comp in Kaikoura on the 5th or 6th of March. It is being run through the Hunting & fishing store there. Not sure of other details - hopefully someone will post.

[/i was using a grim reaper 150 grm in silver, pretty much casting at the kelp from about 30-40meters it took the 2nd cast, and it took about ten minutes to land. The King had a couple of really good runs even with the reel clutch pretty tight. i saw another one that day, i hooked the kelp and when i winched that in to free it, there was a King coming in with the kelp unnderneath. I've since lost a smaller one as well - busted (50lb braid!)me off at the boat, so they are out there. Not sure how you would go about spearing one, they spook easily so using a boat from up wind as a blind might and drifting onto them might work. QUOTE]

Cool.. well done. I've heard rumours of them being out there. but never seen the proof.
I'd probably have a go with a rod first.. I've hooked 2 off the rocks in the sounds but both busted me off. So its up there on my target list.

With the Kings, anyone know how far out we are talking, have a 12ft dingy to chase them but not sure if they are in range? Had so much fun chasing them up Tasman Bay under the mussel farm bouys and I'm keen to have another crack.

hay all, hope ya's are geting out there in this good weather

anyways went for another trip to kaiks in the weekend with member_profile.asp?PF=67026 - pomahaka . left on saturday moring, cant even rember what the time was when we got there. so when there we got our gear on and jump in, the vis was very poor, 2-2.5m vis, i didnt shoot any fish that day, but thanks to member_profile.asp?PF=67026 - pomahaka  and spot x for paua, we still got our daily limt, and one bug. so out we hoped, and headed to south bay for a wee dip there, vis was worst there, but there was a mermaid in a wee tiny black bikini on the rocks, but once she had spoted us killers in the water she was quick to slip away. and that was day one done.

day two

went back to our fav spot, vis was 5m, and very calm, so off i went and found a spot with plenty of butter fish, got enuff for a feed and then made the long swim back to find member_profile.asp?PF=67026 - pomahaka , who had allready got plenty of paua, but we went back to spot x and got a few more, will be going back there a few more times yet Tongue that was it pretty much, jump in the truck and off we went..

cheers steve for a mint trip, hopfully more people can come next time Smile

Good stuff lads.  Was thinking of you guys being in the drink when the sun was scorching me and my paintbrush yesterday.  Cry

With the fair weather this week, that eve trip is looking possible I reckon - let's see how it shapes up.

Are you aware of the new aggregation limits for paua? Can't have more than 20 or 2kg mince, regardless of how many days you collected them. - Cheers

Was out with L Akaloa in... wait for it.... Little Akaloa over the weekend. arrived saturday 6pm, in time for an evening dive, a couple of crays to me and a fat butter for him. Vis a very hazy 2.5-3m. Out again in the morning, pretty hard going with exceptionally poor vis, highly variable, out deep it was >1m, in the weed belt it was more like 2... bit of a swell working as well. managed to grab a cray that I gave myself a hell of a fright finding (basically swam into the bugger) and then waited around in midwater for a fish I wanted to swim past my speartip. All in all, a bit too much like hard work.

In conclusion, Little Akaloa isn't really worth the trip unless you have a batch there, and can sit on the deck drinking beers, in which case it is well worth it.

Yeah that'd be us Yip yo, the weird thing was we were talking to a joker earlier who had been out the weekend before, he said it was pretty good. he'd walked right around to the heads, and then swam back. he said he got a 3kg & a 3.5kg cray, but no idea on the accuracy of the lie detecters. there are definately big ones there, but they have the pick of some very good caves... the second day I was out it felt like I was just proving that the caves I couldn't reach into the day before still could not be reached Geek. but worth it for the beers on the deck.

Ha, good to meet you Yip yo.  As for the worthiness of little Akaloa, I agree R Jack, beers on the deck were fantastic. On another note, Kaiks Summer series, anyone got a spare ride/want a noob partner. I'm not going to get anyone any medals but am just keen to get wet.
